And when the gen require servicing, all your tools won’t work until you have your gen back up.

When you have offsite jobs, you’ll have to rent generator for something you can just do with a cordless tool.
here's what I did to fix such down time

I bought a brand new generator and have a backup generator too. I ensure I change the oil when it's due and I don't do roadside oil. I also do routine maintenance of the generator to avoid total breakdown
n3xt:

There are few things you can’t do without a generator.

Welding machine.

But no be all the time we dey weld. We spend more time cutting, grinding and drilling than we do welding.
And yes, the generator that will power the welding machine will power at least three grinding machine at same time comfortably. So you see it's almost of no use to me.
Greenarrow01:

Don't you have NEPA at home
They are right with cordless tools
Don't be to archaic.
Most times people have light all Through the night
Have a small setup for Charging like 3-4 extra batteries for your tools
Moving generator up and down is not it

Secondly the sound
I hate gen sound.
Thirdly. The 3k you spend on fuel and then the servicing
I have a mobile generator and a stationary one. Trust me I cutting stuff like H beam channel require good power. The generator noise is what I call occupational hazard. My ears have grown to deal with it

Abi na. It is shops like IKEA, Screwfix and various building merchants like Wickes why I can no longer step into ANY Nigerian market from Onitsha down to Alaba. Over the years living overseas, I have lost the skill to negotiate a chaotic and disorderly environment that are Nigerian markets and building merchants. And the dirt and mud and open sewage and miscreants and never do wells. I can't do this anymore. I have paid my dues.

So if I've got a project going, I just pay people to negotiate the disorderliness to buy materials or just call some tested Nairaland suppliers to deliver. I can't go to market to buy materials myself.

Contrast this when you step into IKEA. The orderliness, the transparency of price, the certainty of your purchase, the staging of the furniture to give you ideas on how to solve any furnishings problem at home. From kitchen to bathroom to living room to kids room and even how to showcase your 7.2 AV Receiver, your surround sound speakers and your TV stand or display unit, IKEA got it all covered.

It is sometimes a family day out visiting IKEA. After all the shopping, the family just go to the kitchen (restaurant) and do breakfast or lunch or dinner as the case may be. This orderliness for my family is priceless.

You've said it all Sir.

Is it possible for Nigerians to boycott their services by finding cheaper alternative means perhaps they will get sense,

And that's the thing. It seems that most Nigerians are used to hardship because of the situation in the country. I'll give you an example.

My MaiGuard suddenly decided not to allow artisans to charge their phones in his house anymore. I didn't wade in as I chose my battles but simply provided an extension cord from my garage for them. I then showcased one of the solar products that I sell to the artisans. A solar powered UPS system for N55K. It'll give them 6 points of light, radio, 2 USB ports. You know he refused to purchase it? So yes the options are there but somehow folks are not taking advantage of it.

All my exterior lights are solar powered so my compound is lit from dusk to dawn. My personal decision as I planned my return to Nigeria was not to be dependent on government.

make dem install pay as you go meter end of story!

Since we got prepaid meter, the kind of power we get now is like x2 of when we were on estimated billing.

I am not blabbing, we get minimum of 18 hours daily and sometimes 1 straight week power with less than 2 hours shut down in like 2 days out of the week.

Once they give every home prepaid meters, they will surely sit up.

Increment in Price of Electrical Cables

Has anyone here considered running wires for low voltage lighting in their project?

Problem with the solar system is low sunlight on cloudy days such as in this month.
It allows the battery to drain much lower than the ideal level which may make the battery go bad quick, hence making the whole setup expensive.
I will be installing a wind turbine in few days time and I will share a first hand experience of the hybrid system of solar panels and wind turbine.

think about it. Paying 55,000 for that when a sumec firman generator is just 70,000 and can power a house and more appliances.

Right now, the maths and economics doesn't work for the alternatives

1) They are sometimes onsite where there is no electricity yet. POP and bricklayers can't be carrying generators to site.

2) Once you buy solar equipment you never have to service or buy fuel. IMHO the cost savings is worth it for the level of lights and charging phone. When you get to powering even an inverter welding machine or heavy duty grinder then the investment level increases for sure.

I really do understand that renewable energy will pay for itself on the long run but it is still very expensive now.

Maybe in the future it will get cheaper and quality will increase

I haven't ooo, DC cable is going to be needed for low voltage wiring. We call I direct current, if you are to use alternating current on the DC cable that means you have to buy a stepdown equipment that will convert alternating current to Direct current.

I have done some installation before designed in USA. Most of the cable recommended in the design are bigger size . We study the design and localise it with what is obtainable in Nigeria.

We cahnge all the cable size and and I was opportune to talked to the US consultants.

When the young man met me at NextHome H52 in 2015, I told him “I’m not going to employ you because your gifts will open doors for you.”

His finishing is out of this world.
Yes his finishing is mad! One of the problem i just have with qualified people like that is that they tend to send their interns/boys for most jobs.

When i started the project, the roofing project was given to our popular roof guy here because i fell in love with his work, on getting to the project.. I discovered that he sent his boys instead. (I no vex grin)

Same as the electrical/smart home/cctv contract, deal was signed with the boss but for execution, the boss sent his boys.

When we sign deals with notable brands in our homes, it’s because we want the boss touch but mhen.. our bosses mostly supervise now angry

If we outsource interior, i am 99% sure the main interior boss won’t show up but one of his boys.

If we outsource external floor stamping, 100% the boss won’t also show up.

For someone who want perfection and state of the art finishing, what will it take to get these Ogas to be the one to work on the site??

I know if i hire topsy, topsy might not show up but sent his trusted boys,

If i also hire My Oga Gbade for painting (because I believe he will give the best for my house) oga gbade might merely send his boy (who’s eager to conclude his work asap and get to the next project)
Like when we gave the external window designs (external POP) to one of the best guys around and we paid him in full, the guy sent his boys instead and those ones were just eager to quickly finish the project.

You need to see how rough the pop was! Very rough and the stupid boys were saying “that’s how it would be when it’s still wet, when it gets dry.. the true shape would come out” grin grin lmfao, we ain’t spending alot of money on this just for it to end up looking like a village mud house! It was painful but i ordered all the POPs to be dropped off immediately (in the presence of another pop guy that will do it).

The new POP guy did a perfect job.

The old Pop company is still begging for job till date.

Not really. The one I have will grudgingly power a lightweight fan but not until dawn. Fans and irons (anything with heating elements) is the kryptonite of solar. It’s excellent for lights though.

Thanks.

This is why I always ask folks if they’re hands on or just a “Consultant”. And nothing is wrong with that but it’s just not what I want.

My POP is being done by five guys. The Oga gangan is there, two already free guys that gets job on their own and two casters. The Oga sets the pace and tone, outlines the setup. I can already tell that if he wasn’t there I would have issues. The two free guys are quick to say good enough but the Oga will ask for measuring tape, level, etc

Key staff is also important. I don’t expect Spyder880 to handle shovel or sit at one job site all day. He seemingly doesn’t need to because he’s created a system and employed good staff.

When I was still mad in structured cabling, I did some crazy stuff with Cat6 Gigabit cable and PoE.

We powered some led lights using Cat6 cables.

The bulk of the wires we use in house wiring are for lighting which can be converted to DC. I think we can achieve some savings with reverse engineering.

Definitely you will get the best from us if you involve us.

We have our own standard operating procedure that we follow. I have supervisor

Few of SOP is as follows

When you resume to sit:
-Request for 1m level from the min contractor or builder. This will enable us to know the height socket , switches and tye DB

- Request for the plastering gauge

- Do the 1m level throughout the wall to have uniform height for all the accessories

-Mark out the position of our boxes,

Nice one!

I do 1m level for switches, sockets etc (depending on design requirements) and do 1.8m level for wall sconces, lights, lintel, POP, slab etc.
