The ages of some of the Presidents on the continent are far beyond the retirement age for workers.

The retirement age in most African countries for the working force is 60 years.

However, some African presidents are governing even though they are far older than 60.

Here are the top 7 oldest Africa president....



1. Paul Biya - Cameroon

Age: 87 years (February 13, 1933)

The Cameroonian leader is currently 87years. He has been the President of Cameroon since November 6, 1982. Paul Biya is the 7th on the list of top 10 oldest presidents in the world.

2. Manuel Pinto da Costa – São Tomé and Príncipe

Age: 83 years (August 5, 1937)

Manuel Pinto da Costa served as the first President of São Tomé and Príncipe from 1975 to 1991. The Santoméan economist and politician was elected again as President in August 2011 and assumed office in September 2011.

3. Alpha Condé – Guinea


Age: 82 years (4th March 1938)

The Guinean politician was elected as President of Guinea in 2010. This was after two unsuccessful attempts in the 1993 and 1998 presidential elections. His assumption of the office was historic since he became the first freely elected president in the country’s history and now one of the oldest African presidents.

He is seeking a third term in the country’s October 18 election.

4. Alassane Ouattara – Ivory Coast

Age: 78 years (January 1st, 1942)

Alassane Dramane Ouattara has been President of Côte d’Ivoire since 2011. Prior to that, he served as the Prime Minister of Côte d’Ivoire from November 1990 to December 1993. Ouattara became the President of the Rally of the Republicans (RDR), an Ivorian political party, in 1999. He won the 2010 elections and has governed since then.

Ouattara will contest for another term in the upcoming October elections following the sudden death of Amadou Gon Coulibaly whom he had hand-picked as successor and presidential candidate.

5. Muhammadu Buhari – Nigeria

Age: 77 years (17 December 1942)

President Buhari previously served as head of state from December 31, 1983, to August 27, 1985, after he took power in a military coup d’état. He was elected again as president in 2015 after three unsuccessful bids in 2003, 2007, and 2011 general elections.

6.Nana Akufo-Addo – Ghana

Age: 76 years (29 March 1944)

The President of Ghana had lost the presidential race twice in 2008 and 2012. He, however, won the 2016 elections and took over from a rather younger predecessor, John Mahama.

He had previously served the country as an Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007 when John Kufuor was president.

7. Yoweri Museveni - Uganda

Age: 76 years (15 August 1944)

Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni was part of the rebels that toppled Ugandan leaders Idi Amin (1971–79) and Milton Obote (1980–85). The West, therefore, recognised him as a hero. However, Museveni has since changed the rules to favour him, scrapping Presidential term limits in 2005 to allow for the extension of his governance.
