Photo By Master Sgt. Lindsey Watson-Kirwin | The 104th Fighter Wing hosted Kenyan Defense Force officers for a tour of operations and maintenance. The 104th Fighter Wing and Kenya exchange best practices with one another as part of the State Partnership Program. Present on the tour from the KDF Ministry of Defence were; Col. Geoffrey Cherotwei Simotwo, Col. Chrispin Odhiambo Ongadi, Lt. Col. Peter Musili Muthungo, Lt. Col. Michael Mutinda Ngao, Lt. Col. Issa Saidi Chochote, and Maj. Joseph Mbithi Vala. Members of 104th Fighter Wing leadership present included; Wing Commander Col. Peter T. Green III, Vice Wing Commander David Halasi-Kun, Maintainance Group Commander Lt. Col. Peter Carr, and 131st Fighter Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Jeffrey Beckel. The Kenyan officers were able to get up close with a 104th Fighter Wing F-15C Eagle aircraft. I first heard a decade ago some used F 15 EEs were inbound,a massive 35 birds with low frame/powerplant. Since then nothing and I really think the story was BS. Those heavy twin engines start at 80 mn USD FAC,5 mn USD annual operating cost. It makes sense to go for the single engine F 16 Block 60 at 70 mn USD, 4 MN USD annual cost.

The airforce will still get attack helos, the security situation demands it. The animals we fight are those who will come back to the battlefield after a fixed wing aircraft has expended its main ammunition and returned to base because of fuel. We need aircrafts that will remain in the air for hours. The Tucanos might be fitted into that role for now but it still won't be able to do what an attack helo will do. We still have 6 MI-35s in Russia waiting to be delivered, Ajuri Ngelale mentioned they will be delivered this year some months ago.
Why sign the agreement with Russia if we are not looking to buy new weapons from them. And considering we've been using Russian helicopters for some time now.....

If all the M-436 are delivered, including the loitering time the Tucano has, add that with the UCAVs we have in service.

In fact I predict that we would see more UCAVs , MI-17 helicopters before attack helicopters.

That comment Ajuri made on that interview didn't seem like he made that with any strong evidence.

Off course I would be happy to see more Skyhawk helicopters, I just don't see any new purchase for them happening soon.

Although I agree that the recent military agreement with Russia adds some weight to your argument, but that agreement could refer also to other areas.

However all in all, there are interesting times ahead, I just hope all these purchases lead to very, very improved security situation in Nigeria.

Skyhawk helicopters?? There is one MI-35M in the NAF with the callsign "Skyhawk" - is it that what you mean?

Skyhawk is the nick name NAF calls MI-35M helicopters.

If you look at almost all Combat footages that involve MI-35M helicopters, you'll see NAF describing them as such.

since we're on the subject of tanks, this is a video of a South African tank tech demonstrator. If approved, a real commercial prototype was to be produced.

Uncle Sam will never sell us advanced fighters, We will have better luck going for UH like black hawks, Chinooks, light and heavy transport or light attack hellos from them, we can maybe convince (after intense lobbying) US Congress for us to get away with attack helos but never fighter jets.

USA won't sell fighters unless it benefits them geopolitically, strategically, diplomatically etc and right now we don't have any leverage(the war on terror doesn't meet that threshold) Back in the 70's when we received advanced (at the time) fighters, it was a totally different. To the north, Ethiopia and the whole horn of Africa including Somalia to the East was looking to USSR , So too was Uganda to the west, To the South Tanzania was getting goodies from China... Kenya was thus in a strong position to incentivize the US to provide some serious deterrence that their 'ally' can use to counter any aggression, just like Iran was to the US in M.E when the received f-5s similar to Kenya in the same decade. Such kind of perfect storm where the stars align - cold war scenario is never gonna happen.

I would suggest we look to EU for advanced fighters. Several EU countries have already announced that they are going to stop aid programs to Kenya by 2025(if I rem correctly) and instead they are going to switch their diplomacy to a more trade/business centric relation (equal partners sort of thing) where we will no longer get preferential zero-tariff treatment when exporting goods to them, we will have to negotiate bilateral/multilateral trade deals where principal of reciprocity applies.
It is with such countries where they are likely to treat us as business clients/customers when we have the cash to order their advanced fighters rather than US who is more than likely going to treat us like a child asking his father to buy him an Uzi thinking its a toy.

China and Russia too won't ask alot of questions if we have the cash at hand but it would take a shift on policy for that to happen.

Excellent analysis! We urgently need to think of coproduction and ToT of not just sexy FSBs but all platforms from UAVs, transports, light attack planes and choppers.
Not as IMPOSSIBLE as say just a mere decade ago: China, India, SoKor, SA,Turkey, Pakistan and even Indonesia are now busy in aerospace ventures looking for developing country partners. They know the first in the door will benefit for decades.
I heard India was shopping for an African partner for their Rudra.
By mid table 2030s the West stranglehold on aerospace tac tech will have died.

Even if the "stars aligned" bro US won't give us shiiit. Instead of giving us high-end toys, they will want to establish a base here or very close to secure their interest whatever that may be.

It is about time we do away with the old FP of Non Alignment shiiit !

Let's go where we are wanted and supported. That's the sentiment of most of the present rednecks in the Army. Very agrressive these ones. No time for pillow-throwing or ego massaging.
If you can't give us what we want then we moooove cool

One decade ago, If I read something like this, I would have said its wishful thinking but As we have seen time and time again, its not too late to start your mil industrial RnD.... some countries started with sh!!t that looked funny and they were ridiculed for their so called inventions, 10-30 years later, and no one is laughing anymore, They are exporting - selling and eating into the pie of those that used to laugh at them.
All is needed is political will, a set of strictly followed timeframes run by good management team and full budgetary allocations and soon enough we will be surprising ourselves with each newer version of our prototype.
