People now trade by the roadside which I find very risky. Especially women who display their goods on the floor.
Also a visitor would hardly know that portharcourt zoo is there.
the zoo is under construction for now
it will be reopen when the project is completed

As a Rivers Man I don't think this is our problem rather Ikwerre people's problem because they see this and as an opportunity to conquer all land like the Fooolanis.

You don't need to demolish a market because of hoodlums,if that is the case it mean that all the markets in Rivers State will be demolished because their are hoodlums everywhere.

After the commissioning of Mile 1 market it's still under lock and key till today.

What about those places turned to the hub of cultism by Rivers people, so they should also be demolished undecided undecided undecided This is not beyond reasonable aptitude . Before you demolish a place of people's livelyhood provide an alternative.

I understand your pain but do not allow it the blind you sense of reasoning because that market has been taking over by Northerners and no matter the crime they commit their brothers in the Nigerian police force always protect them.

I think the demolition of the market is in line with a the signing of the anti open grazing bill into law in the state

Maybe you would have understood if you or any of your loved ones have been victims to the criminal activities in that market

Why not have the hoodlums residing there arrested and allowe those using the market for business continue? Sometimes I wonder if Nigerian leaders have brains at all, so what Wike is saying is that any market in Rivers State he suspects hoodlum activity will be demolished.

I see Wike becoming politically irrelevant after 2023.

This I have seen.

Had it been we have state police that doesn't receive orders from Abuja then it would have been possible to arrest the criminals but unfortunately does Northern criminal elements fomenting trouble will always be protected by their brothers in the Nigerian police force

So the best option what's to demolish the place so that everybody will vacate the area

The demolition exercise is coming after the Rivers State Government gave a deadline of September 1st for traders to vacate the slaughter market.

Governor Wike said the slaughter market was built by the Government but was being taken down for the safety of the public as it had degenerated into a notorious nest of criminals.

The State Government had approved the building of a new abattoir at Mgbuosimini Rumueme, and it promises to be an automated facility.

I think they should have built a new abattoir before demolishing the old one.

I wonder why some people are condemning this laudable action by the state governor. Slaughter market is a beehive of criminal elements. You dare not go there around 8pm and come back without boys snatching your phones, money and other personal belongings at knife or gun-point.

I support this move in-toto.
Our northern brothers and few other state actors after taking few wraps leaves nothing but sorrows on their victims.

No, the crime and criminality in and around that particular slaughter market is beyond any other market in Rivers state. I think the state govt did the right thing. One can not walk or drive past there from 6pm, safely. If you're stopped by traffic light, this hoodlums swoop up on you from every corner to dislodge you of your phone, money and other valuables, without fear or caution from security agents.

You clearly don't live there that is why you are making this comment. That place is a very notorious place. It was the best to demolish that place, at least the criminals have no hiding base making it easy to be engaged by the police.

A lying governor, the local government lost the authority of that place to hands of the hausas doing business there ,their inability to impose tax and levies led to the interference and taken over by state government.

Stories flying around said mr tyrant has already converted it to his personal property.

As a governor will you now bring down every market you perceive have hoodlums or criminal activities?
The same governor that got federal government army to deal with obigbo people cannot meet the same military to comb out the hoodlums in slaughter?
If the army gets the kind of support/financial motivation that Wike offer them with regards to operations in obigbo for one week, all the criminal activities in slaughter will stop.

While that is true (as those hausa lads see Slaughter as an extension of the North at night and when they are praying) .... It's gonna be a little tougher, as the roads around the Zoo and TransWoji road will be choked with traders. They should have started building the said abbatoir since lockdown... Plus knowing Wike is just like Amaechi at the core, there is most likely another selfish reason to this.
