Please just asking to know. Whose traditional office is higher among the two, Alafin or Ooni. I know one of them should be greater than the other. |

Mrflyguy: MADDD 9ja pple everywhere. The stats no dey lie for real. >90% of Nigerians indeed have mental issues. A nation where >90% of her citizens live in abject poverty and we have these ones that literally do nothing, get monthly allocation from the governments, lavish the money on Oloshos etc... Yet, we have fools defending them. Just imagine the level of retrogression for God's sake. Monarchs in developed worlds make sure their citizens get the best NOT here in Nigeria. Africa is is 2million years behind the rest of the world. Awon Olofo Oloriburuku! |

sarrki: Don't be frivolous and reckless with your tongue, opening your mouth to speak of the God head as though speaking about a friend of same age makes you thoughtless. Whenever you speak so irreverently of the Holy Spirit you place Yourself in the category of Cain & Esau. Great punishment await anyone in eternity who speak irreverently of the HolySpirit or the Godhead, or make them a part of their baseless joke. Be warned ⚠ 2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. 2 Likes |

slim75d: I like this aspect of Yoruba culture: people have levels, and it's natural to respect the hierarchy. I also like the republican aspect of Igbo culture, nobody is above the other, and it's natural to question authority in any form. Please appreciate different cultures for there are historical reasons for their development, and each has pluses and minuses. 1 Like |

ubola: It's still under debate, and has been the subject of some bitter arguments. In fact the prior Ooni and the present Alaafin were at loggerheads for most of the former's time alive, indicating there wasn't (and still isn't) a clear consensus. The more recent Ooni is just respecting the current Alaafin's age, but I'm sure he will try to impose himself on a younger Alaafin once the time comes. I'll boil it down thus: Ooni is the spiritual leader of Yorubaland. Oduduwa, the first Ooni of Ife (which is the cradle of Yoruba civilization), was posthumously deified, meaning he is now considered a deity and part of the celestial pantheon. His direct descendants are thus the children of a deity and the spiritual leaders during their reigns. Alaafin is the political leader of Yorubaland, and is a decendant of Oranmiyan the first Oba of Oyo (the political capital of the eponymous empire). Oranmiyan was a Prince of Ile-Ife, a grandson (or son?) of Oduduwa, who, after going and causing a bit of a ruckus in Ile-Ibinu (Benin), eventually left Ife to found Oyo-Ile (some say as a result of quarrels with his brother the Ooni). He eventually became the ruler of the vast Oyo empire, which included his ancestral home, Ile-Ife, and thus his descendants, being the children of the first Emperor of Yorubas, are the political leaders during their reigns. Both Ooni and Alaafin are descendants of the same Oduduwa, who - while he lived - was the political leader, and - in his passing - went on to become the spiritual leader. In my humble opinion they are two parts of the same coin - and thus equal. Together, they are the "leader of the Yoruba people". I use the singular "leader", because each descendant is a different aspect of Oduduwa, and is not whole without the other. Abeg, Nairaland, please clap your hands for my attempt at a succinct explanation of a very complicated issue. I used to carry first in Yoruba studies 3 Likes |
