If only naija can improve more on locally iron door.
Believe me people will forget all those fanciful Turkish door that can’t withstand our weather condition.

Let people go round lekki area and see China and Turkish iron door result.
People will agree with you completely.

Those doors are soooo sub-standard.. I'm sure they produce it for the "Nigerian Market" because we desire cheap things (not our fault, we are the poorest country on earth) and anything goes (no standard regulations).

You are very “koret”
Reason why cost of maintenance is high when you value some materials life span to life span of a building.
You will see that its wise to use good quality materials if you have capital to take care of that from beginning

It might not even be due to termites. It could be worms.

If the wood is not Kingpost or purlins, it cm be changed. That's the lasting solution.

Change all the bad woods. Cut grasses around your house. Treat (soak) incoming wood.

Is there any other way of treating them apart from changing? The particular ones having issue were used for the kingpost and few of the rafters

Speaking of doors, I recently got some naija made doors for internal room usage. My builder went to Mushin supposingly to buy but came back with "I order from factory " story. Anyways, it was three weeks late and middle man was involved. I paid 5ok per door; which is not bad if it holds up over time.

What do y'all think

quote author=diordaves post=105614968]

I'm still at the planning stage, so it may take a while (possibly December) to arrive Nigeria but I have the photos already from my local building merchants. See attached photos. Prices and size included.

So it is SOLID Oak or Sapele wood internal wooden door. I don't do internal metal/iron doors. Factory treated against termites ( so you don't need to perform animal sacrifice) and warping; guaranteed for 10 years minimum and ready for vanishing to your taste if you so wish.

You will need to buy locks (photo attached) guaranteed a lifetime, so you don't need to worry about locking yourself in as with Asia locks prevalent in Nigeria.

In price terms, you can land a PROPER SOLID internal wooden door in Nigeria (inclusive locks and keys) for N100K per door. However, I'm buying a bus to load in all items and ship them to Nigeria. I will sell off the bus (fire sale) which will bring the unit cost of each door to about N85k or thereabout.

I normally construct wooden internal doors in Nigeria for rentals. But this project is a family forever home, so I'm happy to import products I'm used to and trust and cry later about the cost.
To be honest, 50k per door is a good price if they hold up over time like you said. However it depends on the type of wood. In my situation I use mahogany . In Delta a mahogany 2 inches thick can be done for about N65k. And then comes the quality of the lock used. A half decent Asian lock may go for as from 9k but a UK traditional Yale or Union brand lock starts from N20k.

In terms of warping, I usually take particular care to buy dried cut. This is difficult to source. After constructing the door, I leave it standing for over two months before hanging. This has worked for me over the years. No warping.

So to guide against warping three steps are paramount:

#Buy dry cut.

#Thickness of door should be about 2 inches and

#Don't rush to hang. Kiln it naturally by standing it on site for sometime before hanging.

Bros.. this your discussion ehn.. comparing UK and South Africa with Nigeria.. grin
What is ordinary about South Africa?

Don't you know we are the poorest country in the world Do you know how many of us live below the poverty line

Why do you think "sachetization" is going on in Nigeria?? Even Baileys is sold in sachets now.

As of right now, you will spend up to 1 million on roofing woodwork of a 4-5 bedroom duplex. How many people are willing to pay more? Say 2 million for woodwork? How long will someone in Iso Pako stock their straight woods before they are bought?

I know Egun will not agree we are the poorest country on Earth but World Bank Statistics no dey lie.

No be una say una big pass South Africa? Ordinary straight wood na premium for giant of Africa. Go Cape Verde, Namibia straight wood na pure water.

The 'standard' optimum door measurements for Nigeria is1981 x 838 x 35mm – in most circumstances this provides the required opening width for cabinets and double door American fridge to go through. You may also hear this door size being referred to as a 2’9”. This measurements will fit any well built project. But the beauty of installing wooden doors is that if the door is too wide, knock down the walls to fit the door. If the door is too narrow for the opening, set some blocks to narrow the opening. So in your area look for the above door measurements or something close. You can't go wrong.

However DO NOT BUY THOSE DOORS you attached. Why? The handles are already fixed. If your door space is right handed and the door (handle) is left fixed, that door is near useless for your use. So buy a plain door, hang the door and fix the handle accordingly.

Go back and look again at my door photos. No handles. This makes the door very flexible for any openings.
