Possibilities With MPH by Z8(m): 9:40am On Apr 05, 2012
Hello house.I recently graduated from one of the Nigerian Universities.I studied biochemistry and I want to further ma educatioin with a MPH cours and specialize in environmental health. But am not properly oriented as to:
1.Job opportunities it will provide
2.Job availability especially here in Nigeria
3.Salary scale
I used to belive that an MBBS is the holy grail in the health sector, but with a good result, and hard work can't MPH equally make you as succesful.
Pls I would like to hear from those with experience in the field or currently studying MPH..tanx undecidede

Firstly, universities only accept mbbs graduates for mph programs so as a biochemistry student the only thing I can assure you is MSPH (masters of science in public health) and not all universities in nigeria offers this but I know for sure that ABU Zaria is doing it.
Secondly, as relating to job opportunities public health sells like hot cake especially if you want to work with an international organisation e.g W.H.O, UNICEF, USAID, etc. And regarding to their salaries, mph officials earns 6figures for starting. I hope this will help.

University of Ibadan admits "non-MBBS" guys for MPH too. you have to be very realistic with your chances. people talk about jobs with international organisations but i promise you they are extremely difficult to get, really difficult. it is not impossible though. you could look out for chances outside Nigeria too.

Dont be deceived, public health does not sell like hot cake. that was probably in the past but the market is flooded now with people with MPH degrees (foreign and local). you really have to consider your chances.

You have asked a rather difficult one here. what do i advice? I would try to do justice to it as much as I can.
First, my experience with MPH is that it is better to specialize in one of the streams at the masters level. so you should be looking at Health administration, Health Economics, Epidemiology, International health, environmental health ETC. this should be guided by the type of jobs you intend to aim for after your MPH. Just to let you know that Health economists are really on demand at the moment on a global scale.
second, one of the main challenges with young people is lack of experience and most MPH jobs look for people with experience. this leaves most people in a "chicken and egg" situation. one of the things you could do to get around it is to do unpaid internships.
I am aware that internship opportunities abound with "West African Health Organisation", also you could have a look at WHO, i am sure they offer unpaid internships too.
Alternatively you could be looking at the federal ministry of health - i gathered there is a ministry of Public health after all. so you could find out from there if you could do an unpaid internship - i am pretty sure they will be glad to have someone bringing in some skills at no cost.

for someone pursuing a career in public health potential employers include
1. International organisations : CDC, WHO, UNICEF, WAHO
2. Private organisations: Clinton foundation, Doctors without borders etc
3. Research jobs
4. Academics

above all i would advice you to look beyond Nigeria for opportunities.
look at the thread I created on scholarship opportunities and see the ones you could explore.
I wish you the best in your endeavors!

I'm also a graduate of biochemistry willing to study mph. In fact, I've already been given admission with the options of specialization in one of the ff;
1. Epidemiology,
2. Environmental and occupational health,
3. Maternal and child health
Please, which do you guys suggest for me cuz it seems u are conversant with the field.
Thanks.

Talking from the superficial point of view, i would advice you go for option 3. who knows, you might actually be able to work in an hospital alongside paediatricians and gynacologists

Good morning to you,pls I have some questions for you. 1.I am a graduate of industrial chemistry from a state university, can I be accepted for a MSC in public health or MPH in UI considering the fact that I only have a year experience in teaching? 2.If I can be accepted for the MPH,when I am through with it,can I lecture with it or is it only corporate organisation that I can work with? I am asking this questions because I want to obtain the present UI PG form but I am weighing my options among MSC In PH or MPH or going for msc in environment and pollution control. 3. If I can lecture with it,is it only public health that I will be teaching @ undergraduate level? 4. Is the health economics still a hot cake till now? God bless as you answer these questions. PLEASE NOTE:I have preference for working in a corporate organization or public org than in the academia but I don't wanna limit myself when I am through because of limited jobs.

I wrote extensively on MPH as a master degree course of study. See full details on the blog.

A MPH is a multi disciplinary postgraduate programme for health professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge in applying and delivering health to the public.
