Even that said it will be obsolete in Nigeria too

The moral of the post is we should know that one day everything will end

Who said that it is an S600 1987 model??

It is not even an S Class.

It is a W100 600.

Google W100 600.

President Babangida visited Katsina and Akwa Ibom States in 1987 and 1988 after creating the two states, but nobody said that the car was made in 1987.

The W100 600 was made from 1964 till 1981.

By the way, there was nothing like S600 Mercedes Benz in 1987.

This is the Conference Visitors Unit (CVU) of State House in 1974.

I remember how this exact same car port was like in 1988. It was mainly filled with W126 S Class Mercedes Benz (500 SEL and 560 SEL), but there was also a blue Peugeot 505 Evolution, several W124 (V-boot) and W201 (190) cars. There was also one Toyota Supra convertible and one of Shagari's W123 stretch limousines.

1) Look at the North Central State (Kaduna State) coat of arms on the limousine.

2) Even state governors rode in stretch limousines back then.

3) There's been a lot of confusion about the name Abba Kyari in recent times, so I think I'll call him Abba Kyari The First. This is Brigadier Abba Kyari, the governor of the North Central State.

4) Look at the bottoms that the corps members are wearing.

This is the passing out parade of the first set of NYSC members in the North Central State. The parade was held in June 1974 at Zaria Race Course.

Nigeria hosted the Organisation of African Unity summit in 1991. It was held in Abuja and the International Conference Centre was built for the summit. The main hall in the conference centre is called the Africa Hall, to reflect the reason that it was built.

The NTA, whose headquarters was still based in Lagos at the time, transmitted their network programmes, including the 9 o'clock news, from Abuja. They began broadcasting early in the morning each day and the news was read in both French and English.

The government bought a lot of 6-door W124 Mercedes Benz limousines for the summit. I don't know the exact number, but speculations in the media ranged from 24 to 52. I believe these speculations were because the limousines bore the name of the head of state's country on their license plate. For example, the limousine that carried Hosni Mubarak had Egypt on its license plate, the limousine that ferried Javier Perez de Cuellar had UN on its license plate and the limo that took Yasser Arafat around had PLO on its license plate.

There were also a lot of interesting rumours. One rumour was that some of the drivers stole some of the limousine. One specific rumour was that a driver drove a limo across the border to Benin Republic where he sold it.

President and Mrs Babangida used the limousines as their official cars after the summit. The limos went into storage during the Shonekan and Abacha eras, but they were brought back during the Abdulsalam Abubakar era and both General Abubakar and Admiral Akhigbe used them.

This picture is from one of General Abubakar's visits to Lagos. He and Governor Marwa are in the limo and it is being shepherded by SSS operatives in Land Rover Discovery SUVs and mounted policemen on horses.

Several Rolls Royce cars were used as the Nigerian Number 1 state car in the colonial and post colonial era. The most famous of them were the Rolls Royce Phantom V and Phantom VI.

Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa Balewa, Aguiyi-Ironsi and Yakubu Gowon were all chauffeured in Rolls Royces.

Rolls Royces were also used by the Nigerian High Commission in the UK.

See pictures below

(This are pictures of the Nigerian High Commission's cars. I will post pictures and videos of the state cars used by governors-general of Nigeria and of the cars used by Nnamdi Azikiwe and Tafawa Balewa).

The first car is a Rolls Royce Phantom V, while the others are Phantom VI.

FGN = Federal Government of Nigeria (that was the license plate for Nigerian Government cars back in the day, but we also had CVU, that is, Conference Visitors Unit of State House).
@naptu2, Nairaland encyclopedia! I see you sir. Keep dishing out historical facts.

That's the W100 that was used by Gowon, Obasanjo (only when receiving foreign heads of state), Shagari and Babangida......
Was the W100 retired to the war museum in Umahia like the one the late Murtala Mohammed was assassinated in?

I never knew Nigeria had the limo version of this Mercedes-Benz. I wonder what happens to these vehicles in the Aso rock car pool when they want to get rid of them and replace them with new ones.

By a law that was passed when Tafawa Balewa was prime minister, all Federal Government cars that were not attached to any ministry, department or agency was kept at CVU. Most times these vehicles are kept either at the Presidential Ground Fleet or at CVU.

The giant Mercedes Benz buses that were used for FESTAC '77, buses and limousines that were bought for international events like Ecowas Summit, All Africa Games and African Nations Cup were kept at CVU.

There was a particular limousine that I could not identify (it was the only one that I couldn't identify) that was kept at 15 Awolowo Road (former SSS Headquarters). It looked like a 1950s Mercedes Benz. I saw it from a distance but was not allowed to get close to it.

The cars are usually eventually sold, but they will often be in government ownership for decades (I remember seeing an advert for Tafawa Balewa's Rolls Royce).

However, a lot of the cars were sold during the Obasanjo era (1999-2007). President Obasanjo was trying to reduce the Federal Government's financial commitments, for example, he sold a lot of government houses in Ikoyi. CVU in Lagos was emptied during Obasanjo's era. It no longer exists and instead the complex is used to keep cars that were seized by EFCC.
