Lol... Ur very funny, u rily tink things were cheap those days because ur comparing the then economy wit d present one. Read the post again, a graduate was being paid 600 nd he wanted to buy a car of 12k, he had to borrow money to do so. If ur being paid 600 as a graduate nd a land is about 5k, do u think it will be easy buying d land considering u have ur rent, wife, children nd other family bills to pay from the 600 (dats if ur even earning up to dat)

But I feel those days were the remnant of the good deeds of our colonial masters once the black man took control things went south.

Land of Doom , Nigeria. My father bought his 2 plots of land in the 70s at 150 naira each, my uncle bought a new Datsun tear rubber I think in the 80s for 4,000 naira . My father retired in the year 1990 on 1,200 naira Pension. He will send me to the bank with a cheque for 100 sometimes and each time he will asked for his account balance. Bank staff will write it and put it in an envelope. I dare not open it ! Lagos to Ibadan bus was 20 - 50 naira then , (80s-90) now about 3,000 ! My father will give me 120 naira Return Lagos to Ibadan, I will enter Hausa trailer at toll gate for 10 naira and pocket the rest money !

Anybody remember 7up spell and win ? You spell the words with the letters under the crown you win . Star price then was Daewoo racer. You need to spell DAEWOO but the letter D everywhere wasn’t coming ! My brother used his school fees to buy 4 crates of 7 up, opened all but no letter D. My sister was to later grassed on him and told my dad !

The part about Daewoo Racer got me. I cann't forget that advert then. It went thus " 7UP highlife, highlife.... something something i got the Daewoo Espero.,. something something Radio... chaii..

I must commend NTA sunday Newsline crew. They are the only ones that have remained the same with their soundtrack from back in the days. The regular NTA News dey try too.. I like how they retained those early memories via their unchanged soundtracs..

STOP TALKING TRASH ONLINE. WAS YOUR GRAND FATHER ABLE TO GET 4K EASILY IN 1982?
WAS ANYONE EARNING 3K NAIRA AS MINIMUM WAGE?
STOP ALL THESE USELESS POST
Very disgraceful post.
Even when one of the replies in the original post gave an information that should have helped any person with commonsense. But today you see graduates disgracing their certificates by posting like illiterates.
A man there said in same time period,he was earning ₦100 as a junior staff.Without spending his salary it would have taken him about 3 years,6months to buy a beetle car then.
A junior goverment staff let's assume earns about 80k today.
A basic new car costs about ₦4million today.Takes same years to buy equivalent same car.
So it's still same, yet assumed graduates are just looking at the face value of ₦4000 without looking at the equivalent income, wages and value of goods/services over the years.
For those that do this kind of stupid comparison,I always ask,$4000 in America in 1982,is it same as $4000 today?Absolutely not!

This Volkswagen costs less than #4000 Naira back then in 1982. Today, 4000 Naira cannot even buy a tyre or Battery.

God will never forgive all our leaders from 1960 for bringing us to this stage of disrepute hardships and backwardness.

Daewoo racer was about 120k tear rubber.
Toyota celica brand new (mint) I was sent to westex motors along isolo expressway to buy with a cheque was 350k that was 1993-4.
Nigeria already has started spoiling. Fews years later ie 1996 top of the range E class Mercedes benz (brand new) coup I saw and screened how expensive it was 1.8m! Now you hear of same benz costing 60-70m and above.
This regime nko, few years ago ie 2015 I went to elizade motors to price Toyota hummer bus, it was 5.5m for the high roof one. The low roof was 4.7m. That same bus is close to 30m just within 5 years.
Honda civic, corolla etc were about 3-5m just 5 years ago, now without about 18m, no near there.
Do you know a hyundai sonata as at last month is now 18.5m, Creta 13.5m (probably increased now).
Seems as if very soon cars will be 100m upwards for new. ( money to take build house).
The amazing thing is no one will give you financing because salaries have not increased commensurate with inflation.

The equivalent of 4000 naira in 1982 to now is 1.4m
Those thinking that it is the same with the 4k they have in their pockets right now should keep that in mind.
So the point is, in 2051 1.4m would not be able to even afford a car tire? If things don’t get better cry

During those army regimes, buying and securing properties enthailed serious connections.
So it seems.

Wasn't just about affordability.

Nigeria started being bad immediately somebody like you and your brother were born. Your dad gave you N120 for transportation you would enter housa trailer for N10 and pocket the balance and your brother used his school fees to buy 4 crates of 7up. Greediness kept Nigeria the way we are.

This is why it isn't good to store up treasure on earth without engaging them.in a productive cycle. Imagine a local farmer who buries his cash or someone just saving for bank's meagre interest rate.

I think 4K then will be like 4milla now.
When I started primary school in 1983,every kid will put 1kobo(the big brown coin)in that Fuji plastic lunch box, that was our lunch money then until Babangida came I and messed everything up.
Gradually 1kobo became 10kobo and then to 1naira,still in primary school o.Until I finished secondary school,my feeding allowance from my dad was 10 naira I think for the whole week(2naira per day)

There has never been good time in Nigeria! There has only been lucky people
well you have a point, luck only comes to those that are prepared for it and work towards that, when new cars are sold for #4k how many people bought it then, many can't even afford bicycle or Vespa, cement is now #3k+ and houses are springing up like weeds, many people will encounter a lucky chance but sadly cannot exploit it for their own benefit
