From historical records, their Igbo ancestors came first from the hinterland but due to the certain factors like population pressure of the Ijaw migrants, the people began to move towards Ijo. Kalabari saw a large Ijaw influx and used her power to subdue Okrika. Okrika lost their language to Kalabari, but Bonny retained their Ndoki language.

Now in the old eastern region, no one went about trying to force these people to accept Igbo. Infact the NCNC government promoted the Kalabari language which became the 2nd most spoken language after Igbo in the Niger-Delta. Cardinal Rex Lawson is an example of this hybrid nature as he sang in both Kalabari and Igbo. Hilda Dokubo is another example and a host of others.

Each of the above groups went by their ethnic name. Bonny went by Bonny, Kalabari answered their name, Degema the same, Okrika the same down to Andoni. Nothing like Ijaw ethnic group. Their hybrid culture was accepted by the Okpara led government. But immedietely the Ijos took charge of old Rivers state as war booty, a lot began to change. From going all out to remove the Igbo vestige in P/H, they went about massive change of identity of these Riverine groups to Ijaws.
