How Can I Get A Remote Back End Job by GENERALSEIFDAN1(m): 2:57pm On Sep 25, 2021
Hey everyone, my name is Daniel. I am a recent graduate that majored in Computer Science. I am a PHP developer and need a remote job. I have some projects I have built with procedural PHP and I am currently trying to work with OOP PHP and start using laravel framework. The one deployed online is using MySQL for database.

I look forward to getting suggestions that can help me become better and landing a tech job soon.

I am also in PHP now. I want to ask boss, how many projects have you been able to do with PHP? What kind of project? How long have you been learning?

To answer your question, why not start with upwork. At least you can earn while searching for the big break since you have projects to show.

If you are a junior Dev, you should be doing front end...most companies don't hire "junior back end developer"

So how does one become a backend developer?

Precisely but I digress, OP if you know PHP learn a platform like Magento. Its the surest way to a remote or relocation job.

Wrong. The problem is that a lot of these young devs focus on building some shitty web app with "fancy" UI.

OP, find a mainstream programming Language that isn't focused on web dev. C++ or C# are very good choices

If PHP is your first love, I will advise you to stop looking for job and do the following, Visit laracasts.com and start learning, make sure you do some meaningful projects that is based on idea and imagination, learn the Software Decoupling architecture using Vue js (Front-end) and Laravel (Backend). Make sure you have 2 to 3 projects on that. That said, you should also not forget to create a portfolio website that will showcase your project.

I believe job will start looking for you in no time.

The thing with C++ or C# is when you are done learning what do you do with it. Lets say it takes me 3 months as a Nigerian living in Nigeria to learn C++. After that what next C++ is used in game development but after a couple of udemy videos, willI have enough knowledge to build a game. It is also used in embedded systems but realistically speaking how do I get into that. How do I apply the C++ knowledge to that? How do I get a job too as there's really no C++ jobs in Nigeria and the few remote ones are for the advanced guys with 50 years of experience? Besides programming is more of application than memorisation. Even if I learn all the functions in C++ and dont apply it daily. I will forget it in a months time.

So the first thing with a lot of these young devs is the wrong belief that you can gain language competence in 3 months. I don't know about all these una new stacks o, but C++ is not one of those languages.
Talking about gaining experience, there are a thousand open source projects that you can begin to gain professional level experience by contributing to. Without mentioning any names, one of the major distros of Linux is constantly recruiting C++ devs. Not as freelancers o. As full-time employees with health, dental, vision and pension benefits on top of your monthly salary. And they recruit you as Remote/WFH knowing full well that you are in Nigeria (or Africa). But a lot of us Nigerians are just happy to meet local demand. Which is not a bad thing in it's self. Just that local demand is light years behind global demand

I don't know why you are downplaying PHP because all the benefits you wrote up there all diff kinds of Dev gets it including 401k if you're working for a US company.

You said a major Linux distro is recruiting C++ Devs compared to a lot a businesses recruiting developers that code in PHP, etc

The thing is nothing wrong in learning c++ or any stuff but what tensa emphasize on is the fact that if you are learning anyone then make sure you already have one paying you already then you can pick any.
For instance, You are already earning and want to pick c++ to increase earning. Tensa ma dey earn before he added salesforce. So, the first goal is to get one paying first and stuff like c++ might take time before the pay begin come Kuma we know all know the first goal is to start earning asap.

Oh don't get me twisted. I am not downplaying PHP. If it was a strongly-typed language, I probably will have it in my arsenal. I'm talking more about demand and supply. PHP devs come a dime a dozen. They are everywhere resulting in heavy supply. In an over supplied market prices drop.

With C++ however, a lot of people run away from it. It's too hard. It's old school they say. So supply is low. But demand for is high, especially in niches such as embedded computing, and a lot of hardware stuff like drivers.

I'm not saying C++ is a more superior language. It is a road less travelled and therefore employers tend to pay more especially in certain niches.

I'll give another example. In IT a lot of people don't think about Voice or Telephony. Again another road less travelled that can be profitable

I get that point. The need to be earning an income. But my advice was to someone who doesn't even have a skill yet. People get pressured into wanting to start earning quickly and end up getting stuck in whatever work they decide to dive in. It's very difficult after getting used to Fullstack development to then switch to the very "dirty" world of C/C++ dev where no one cares about how sleek and beautiful your interface is. I will give you an example. In 2013 someone in the US advised me to take up Data Science as a specialisation. 2013 o! When fintechs hadn't broken through like they have now. I thought the person was mad. Asked him who will employ me in Nigeria. He said I should forget the Nigerian Market that I could work for US companies while sitting in Naija. 2013. If I had listened to him then, I would have been far gone down that line by now.

It might not be 3 months it can be six months, a year or 2 years. But even after you memorise and cram all of C++ functions from various YouTube, books and Udemy videos. Will that be enough to contribute to open source projects. Realistically speaking, how many newbies who know C++ have contributed to this open source projects. When I started programming I also wanted the difficult things. I wanted C++ too. My friend then someone who has been in data science for years no job told me web development is over saturated it was until a guy a blockchain Dev called me and told me Chale. You are in Nigeria, do what will bring money before poverty frustrates your entire being. These things aren't too straightforward for people in Nigeria. Once I got my first job I started learning professional java to move to enterprise app development but if I didn't learn web development first how will I even get to that level of comfortability. If someone is still in his teenage years and eating his mother's food then C++ is an amazing language learn it start contributing in programming Competitions hackathons et al but not for someone who there's poverty battling all around him.

i'm just lucky to haved followed your moniker. you are highly cerebral!
though i'm just starting my journey into programming world. presently delving into web development. then after, i'll delve into aspect that is in tandem with my course(mechatronics engr) viz: machine learning and A.I. and most importantly learning c++, cos i will need the basic knowledge when learning adruino and its microcontroller.
as a person with a japa mentality, i think learning c++ will be an advantage to me. i still av 4+ yrs to utilize.
bt i keep looking up to u!

Well I really don't know what to say but what I can say is that programming is more of application than memorisation. There's no amount of learnings watching videos, reading books that beats real world experience until you start gaining experience working on real world projects it's not gonna be easy and if time isn't taken you will forget absolutely everything you have learnt.

PHP is not saturated bro... it's when the supply of PHP Devs exceeds the demand, that's when it's saturated.

Now here's the thing there are a lot of PHP Devs but the demand is more...check stack overflow, check indeed, etc C++ is kinda the opposite, in the sense that there is low demand compared to PHP, JavaScript, etc but there is a lower supply of Devs.

C++ is very good, so is PHP

Not only programming. Everything IT. I used to be super good with Ms Excel (for my former work place ni o! cos dem no dey know excel finish). Dropped excel for a bit and when I came back I'm asking people where to to covert text to table. Real life steady use trumps cramming

So why will someone learn C++ when a chance wont come to put the knowledge into daily practice.

I tell you for free bro. There are enough chances out there. Loads of Linux distros looking for drivers for different hardware. I don't want to go into the detail of all of that here.

You know what, it's fine. He should focus on HTML/CS/JS and then grow to PHP. That's the more financially secure route in Nigeria

PHP. It's the most used backend on the internet and powers a lot of platforms. You can look into Magento once don't with PHP.

Wordpress is much easier than Magento. For a beginner, wordpress is not bad but to get a higher pay magento is much better.

Would be nice to meet you in person. You always shoot from the hip with your contributions. No sugar coating or trying to dumb down the realities. Always nice to read your contributions on these Nairaland Tech streets.

Quick question. Will it ever be possible for another forum in Nigeria to come against this NL behomoth? Or rephrasing it better, is it going to be worth it going against NL for a share of the forum market in Naija?

It's possible to compete against nairaland but the greatest challenge will be getting users to use the product. Not going to be easy at all.

For several years na 2go dey reign. Then BBN came ane retire 2go. WhatsApp came and buried BBM. Telegram, Wire, MySudo, Signal are all having a legitimate go at WhatsApp.

Heard about Slack? I guess No. Slack is the WhatsApp for businesses abroad.

My point? The Sky is big enough
