That's what being informed can help you achieve. An efficient solution without dispute or bickering.

Today I understood the importance of being informed and I thought of sharing this information. It may be useful to someone.

I went to the bank to deposit USD, unfortunately among the notes is a $100 2003 series. The teller brought out the old series and said they don’t accept it. I have heard of BDC rejecting old notes but for a bank? So I thought I should check what CBN has to say, I googled “old note series CBN”, and found a Memo by CBN that says banks and BDC are not to reject old series or lower denominations.

I quickly informed the teller that there’s a memo to the effect of rejecting old series. The teller said he would have to confirm from his superior, he went ahead to call his boss, the boss came and was like “oh yes, we don’t accept old series”, so I brought out the Memo on my phone and showed it to him and said I need him to confirm that he would not be accepting the old series. He started stuttering and was like he will need to confirm, I said sir this thing is in black and white. I guess he was trying to save face, he went to his desk, made a phone call, then instructed the teller to accept the note.

Below is a copy of the Memo/Circular, in the event anyone might need it.
This has been very helpful. Thanks for sharing

Their usual act of rejection can either be sued vertically or horizontally but when you compare the monetary value of cowries and silver coins, the sense-able distance btwn the manager and their workers is much more lower than a tuber of beans but atm we really can't blame anyone, CBN was once built with bamboo sticks

Nice one Op, you achieved your deposit goal and also educated a few uninformed bankers on updated policy.

Kudos to education and the educated. wink

Its because of the money you are depositing that made you have such sense .... people depositing naira no Dey get that kind sense I swear ...

Good money from a good country dey give sense and value to the holder

While bad valueless money from a poo hole country dey make the currency holders senseless just like teller you met at the banking hall.

Senseless people should always try and have at least one note of reasonable currency to give them sense
Ontop $100? My friend you are not alright.

Thanks for going this far about this. Anytime I plan my travel to Naija, I go to my bank, withdraw my usd and when I ask the tellers to change the old dollars, they look at one another as if there's something wrong with me and my Country Nigeria. I always tell them that the older usd notes are exchanged at a lower rate and I didn't even know this has been address by CBN.

After that experience, it will be the last thing on their mind. They will attend to him & make him leave that banking hall fast because Nigerians are usually intimidated by knowledgeable people.

Same thing with the energy or power distribution companies (whatever they call themselves).

Always cutting consumer's wire. I printed a copy of the memo that no one should disconnect your light even after 10 30 days. Everything has a procedure but alas some Nigerians are always afraid.

So I was at home one day. They came, just six days after serving us. I didn't talk much. Just waited until the technician climbed the pole and brought my phone.

He stopped halfway and asked what I was doing. I waved the doc at him and he came down, read and smiled. I smiled back and he left.

It's there on NERC's website.

You have done well, and you are very intelligent to be able to know this...

Majority of these our so called bankers hardly follow the new CBN news to keep them abreast of the latest news...

I could remember when I worked in the bank, God continue to bless my boss then, he would always say Wunmi and others, make sure you follow CBN and know what's going on in the banking system, so that you won't be lost when a customer ask you a question...

The other things back lack these days now is training school, I'm not sure they still go to training school, like every 6month to keep them inform of the new and latest banking development ..

Many things have fallen apart.

Those female bankers no dey use eye see young guys who operate a domiciliary account with huge funds inside.

I once read a story a guy shared, he came to withdraw 15,000 United States dollars, the female banker was just over him, serving him well thinking the guy will ask for her number, the guy said that she ended up demanding his number... What money can do sha!

You can sleep with most of them the next day if you give them format and play your cards well.

Most of them in banking institutions are just mere bank workers, you will hardly find bankers amongst them...

No he didn’t ask for tips, he was like, hope when they give it to me I will accept it, and I said I won’t, he was like “u see”, told him I didn’t know accepting old notes was a problem until he established it just now that there’s a problem accepting old notes. He then said in that case what will then happen, told him I don’t know, the Memo said he as a financial institution must accept the note, it didn’t say me as a customer must accept it and that he will have to take it up with the CBN. Walked out!!!!

Certified bankers know the policies, rules and regulations guiding the practice of banking.

Bank workers = laborers cheesy (layman definition)

I actually don't know what's going on in that sector nowadays. It's like there is a serious knowledge gap or brain dearth in our banking industry; it wasn't this bad ! I had a very funny experience or should I say a shocking one at a branch of one of the oldest banks in Nigeria recently.

If I should give a detailed narration of what transpired between me and the branch service manager on that particular day here, hmm I have no doubt in my mind that the guy's job will be on the line ! Some of these guys just don't know anything. I thought the customer service lady ( a blabber) was horrible enough but not until the "Oga" Service manager "attended" to me !

What made the encounter funny was that while I, a customer, was schooling both the head customer service lady and Oga Service Manager about the basic banking procedures, they thought I was a mystery shopper ! Fear was visibly written all over their faces; fear that was so real that it could be touched ! I just told them that they shouldn't think that I was a mystery shopper and I left their premises with a sense of disappointment.
