Who even wants war? Look let me tell you... Even if us or Russia were to fight with Nigeria, they would think twice because military might alone doesn't give you victory. The results of wars are sometimes very unpredictable. The prices to pay too after wars are not one that any country would wish for.
Even as Russia and US are currently matched in military strength, the victory in a battle between them could go either way.
US were defeated by a much weaker Vietnam. They got their asses handed to them by a Taliban group with just AK 47's.

Putin is just making sure that if any country challenges russia anything anyday, they would be ready.

Meanwhile, if they aren't matched, then russia is well ahead.
The only place that the US can boast of beating Russia is in the sky as they possess more fighter aircrafts.
Russia possesses more nuclear weapons and ground military equipments ranging from tanks, artillery, self propelled artillery, rocket launchers, armored vehicles etc.
I think they're both matched too on naval department as the only thing the US navy focuses on are their aircraft carriers
