If you're from the East and you're a Nigerian, always remember that you're FIRST a BIAFRAN before you're a Nigerian. If you're from the West and you're a Nigerian, always remember that you're FIRST an Oodua before you're a Nigerian. Don't be scared of your identity.

Based on history, Olukere of Ikere is the actual ruler of Ikere-Ekiti before Ogoga, who is a hunter, came.

They have been in the tussle for years...

But the government release actually said this Olukere will preside over just a portion of Ikere which is Odo oja community. Can you see the confusion Sir?

I know olu kere and ogoga as always been there all these years, which means ogoga as been a king before olu kere and now ikere as to kings just like ibadan olu badan and Alafin of oyo. Then when i school in ikere i used to think olu kere was the main king while ogoga was a rival.

Another stooge for his state governor. Traditional institutions in this country have been bastardized. Only a very select few are actual kings, the rest na just glorified chiefs.
This should be none of your frigging business though. If someone insults that your Benin Oba now, you'll start wailing like toy-deprived spoilt brats.

Know your History well....Oluikere ruled as a chief not a King. Ogaga came to Ikere and rescued them from war and they all agreed to crown him as the first King in Ikere

Government and their nonsense abracadabra. This is how they deliberately set the state on fire and create problems among the citizens.

Since the new recognized king is presiding over a small and a particular (odo oja) community out of the larger ikere Ekiti community , it is wrong for the new king to be bearing the title of Olukere of Ikere because that title automatically grant him power beyond his Odo-oja community. I won't be surprised if the Ikereland go up in flames because of this nonsense

Afonja decendants in Ilorin should push for their own oba in Ilorin.
But they are comfortable with emireship. To tthese ardent Islamic religionists, obaship will encourage occultic and ritual practices, while emireship is in tandem with Quran and way of Allah.
I pity them for their ignorance

Ogoga will definitely be heading to court to challenge this decision.

Congratulations to Olukere anyway, he played his politics right in the last governorship election and this is his reward.

Olukere has existed before the Ogoga title.
Olukere has been the traditional priest of Ikere and traditionally,he is seen once in a year in public just to perform traditional rites during the festive period.

With this development,he will now been seen more in public ,preside over town matters aside traditions and possibly belong to the council of Obas ,be on the payroll of the state govt etc.

I am a proud Ikere lady .

Been hearing different tales over the years though. The power tussle has been on for decades, I just hope both factions can peacefully co-inhabit, otherwise the town is sitting on a keg of gunpowder.

May the New king live long and have a peaceful reign.

I know political affiliation played a great role in the installation. May another party when in power not demote the kingship

This is a political solution to what has been a tussle of superiority over the years.

There is no disputing the fact that the Olukere has been there long before the Ogoga emerged. However, he was more of a kingly priest who was embedded in the maintaining the customs and performance of rituals for the posterity of the town. That was the status before the colonial administration came and required kings to belong to Council of Kings/Obas.

As at this time, the Ogoga had helped in rescuing the people during the war, so he was made into a type of Prime Minister who attended to social and political events, since the Olukere traditionally only attended public functions at the festivital of 'Olosunta rock' deity and other trado-religious rituals ceremonies. Moreover, the Olukere was relatively non-educated in the Western ways.

Gradually, the Ogoga became recognised as the king politically by the government, even though he was meant to represent the Olukere. The Olukere by default became relegated as the Priest. However, he meets the Ogoga once a year during the Olosunta festival and his traditional position as the rightful head on those occasions was in no doubt.

As Christianity become more prominent in the late 70s and the early 80s, most of those traditional rituals and idol worship had become obsolete due to the revival efforts of churches like CMS and CAC, amongst others. The Olukere became irrelevant, as he no longer wielded any political nor significant religious authority.

Later on, a prominent educated person became the Olukere, and further purged the stool of the scary ritualistic status. That marked the beginning of the real tussle for recognition of the Olukere as the real king of Ikere. Since it was impossible to reverse what has become well-established over the years, this new decision to recognise Olukere as the Oba of Odo-Oja, is therefore an effort to solve the problem without creating more difficult ones. After all, Odo-Oja was the nucleus of the old Ikere township, which later became expanded.

I am sure everyone in Ikere knows that Olukere is the right head of the town based on well-documented history, but you can't just proscribe the office of the Ogoga after all these years. After all the Olukere willingness delegated or if you prefer, relinquished leadership to the Ogoga. Maybe this current solution would eventually bring peace and reconciliation to the town! I sure hope so, but time would tell.
