NUPENG says all tanker drivers from the union would withdraw their services nationwide.
ByAgency Report October 9, 2021 2 min read
The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) says its Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) will commence strike on Monday over the deplorable state of the nation’s highways and other issues.

Tayo Aboyeji, the South-west Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos said the union has lost many lives and properties due to bad roads.

Mr Aboyeji said that all tanker drivers from the union would withdraw their services nationwide.

“This is not the first time that we will signify our intention to go on strike but we have to call it off because it will generally affect majority of Nigerians but now our hands are tied.

“We are going on nationwide strike because of the deplorable and shameful state of our highways.

“When a truck loads petrol in Lagos, the drivers spend five to six days to get to Abuja because of the shameful state of the roads.

“All calls by the executive of petroleum unions have fallen on the deaf ears of the government as the highways continue to deteriorate nationwide.

“The list of the highway (sic) are endless and the tanker drivers have been going through harrowing situation while rendering selfless national service.

“The increase(d) rate of fire incidences involving petroleum tankers with accompanying massive destruction of lives and properties of our members and general public is enough.

“This is because of government failure to enforce installation of safety gadget on tanker.

“This will protect the inflammation contents of their trucks from spilling over in a situation of road accident.

“We see the failure of the government in this regards as height of insensitivity to lives of innocent Nigerians and union cannot continue to hold its hands while our members are getting burnt everywhere and everyday,” he said.

The zonal chairman said the union is not happy with the unscrupulous abuse of tonnage.

“There are some trucks that carry 60,000 litres to 100,000 litres on the highway.

“This load has a negative effect and impact on the safety and control of drivers on the wheel as well as durability and sustainability of the highway.

“The unions do not want any truck to carry more than the approved capacity,” he said.

Mr Aboyeji said the union had given notice to the government “to put all these in order to avert the nationwide strike on Monday.”

“We know that the present administration would not do anything until we start the nationwide strike,” he said. (NAN)

Fashola failed as minister of power, that he became named as minister of darkness. Then Buhari removed him to save him from further mockery. Now as minister of works, all Federal road collapsed under his watch.
This is how overhyped "local champions" are disgraced. Seated in Lagos State, where he borrowed billions and received further billions, the people thought this failure was performing. Just imagine if this fellow was governor of a poor state, like Kogi, workers would have all died?
Who recall this same Fashola as chief of staff to TINUBU were unable to fix roads in Lagos, was busy then to be raising sign-posts "THIS IS FEDERAL GOVT ROAD ... PLEASE BEAR WITH US". Now as Federal Minister, he has failed.
He said that providing electricity was no rocket science, but 4 years on the saddle highest generation was 3000MW, same as what he inherited. Housing ooo, nothing to show. Now common Federal roads are impassible.

Truck drivers go through a lot on the Highway, and that is probably the reason most of them resort to hard drugs.

From bad roads to police harassment and bandits operation, a lot goes through their minds on a daily basis. Yet, it's a job they can't stop doing cos it will affect the wellbeing of the entire nation. They deserve better welfare package and the federal government should consider working on major routes these drivers us.

Also, we should start using our train services for petroleum products transportation. It will be less risky and will also preserve the lifespan of our roads.

Toh...

Let me go and fill my car fuel-tank ...at least before 70+ litres will finish in intra-city drive, either NUPENG or the government will have stood down grin

We all know Bubu won't fix shitt grin..

A meeting here, one or two fat envelopes for the NUPENG officials there, and we will hear how one memorandum was signed and that for the interest of the same Nigerians who they embarked on the strike for in the first place, they are calling off the strike to reduce the suffering of Nigerians caused by shortage of fuel caused by their strike grin

NUPENG are striking for the masses...and also calling off the strike for the masses..Isn't God wonderful grin

Hmm.... One begins to wonder where the useless infrastructure this inept government are always shouting about is that made them plunge the masses into serious hunger and insecurities. Where are the infrastructures if the highways are bad and driving is no longer feasible

Ridiculous.

Going on strike because of deplorable roads, are you transporting petroleum products for free? You want to go on strike for the next 10 years that is the minimum time the government can take to fix the roads.

Very very ridiculous.
They just want to create a cosmetic fuel scarcity to cover exploitation of the masses they've missed all this while.

The trucks driven by their members are the major cause of damage to our roads

NUPENG does not want to state its reason to go on strike. They are looking for a way to extort extra money from Nigerians at the pump like they did during PDP era
