kingreign: Hello Sir. Sorry to 'crash' your party, but I am alarmed by your all or none stance. Be it Toyota or Honda, I believe the key issues that determine how any car ages are: 1) The general health/ condition of the car when bought. 2) The driving and maintenance habits of the user. I say this from experience. Not just from a gut feeling or by watching people I don't really know from a distance. I have used my 2003 Accord as a daily driver for ten years (In the tenth year now). Driven it to every state in South-West, most of the Eastern States and South-south. Driven in stop and go city traffic and all manner of roads. Believe you me, I have never had my ball joints 'pull' on me. I replaced them (using OEM) for the first time about 2 years ago when I started hearing knocking sounds from one of them. Never again till date. Only a couple of months ago did my original transmission fail, after over 171,000 on the odometer. I immediately got a replacement shipped from Luvinghubby and fixed within a week. Going again like new till date. My leather upholstery and ivory dashboard still look pristine. Anytime I go to the car wash, the nearby tokubo car seller would approach me to ask me to let him know whenever I want to sell the car. I asked him why once, he told me it is so neatly used that he would resell it as a tokunbo. Now, when I wanted to buy this Accord, a friend who wanted to buy a car at the same time vehemently tried to dissuade me, just as you are doing now. He said the leg would 'pull' and told me how Toyota was more durable and all. He bought his Toyota Corolla, I bought my EOD. He was the one who incidentally kept having issues with his corolla (although after using it trouble free for at least 5 years. Meanwhile, I used my Accord trouble free for 8 years before changing ball joint. All I did was routine maintenance). He eventually sold his corolla and bought a Camry (Muscle). That Muscle is less than three years now but my Accord looks cleaner, healthier and performs comparably even today. In fact, my air conditioner works far more efficiently than his camry, regardless of the age of my car. I have a few other friends who have used and sold Toyotas (corollas and camrys) are in their second or third cars now. They all say my Accord doesn't seem to be aging at all and have learnt to respect Honda with time. One of them even bought a Honda for his parents (He brought the car to me for inspection before paying). In fact, I am like their 'mechanic' who helps them diagnose their car problems and fix. In summary, I do not subscribe to the blanket relegation of Honda as worse than Toyota. Several other factors are involved. As it's been said already, one major downside for Toyotas is that their parts are more expensive than Hondas. In terms of performance, how can you compare the 128hp common corolla to the 161hp 4cyl 2003 - 2007 Accord? ... Only the Muscle camry compares in horsepower and stability at very high speeds (170km/h and above). Not even the 2003-2006 camrys. Let each man buy what they like. The main thing is to buy a healthy car and keep up with maintenance, using recommended parts. I come in peace Cheers! 13 Likes |

nas00: Lovely read. To buttress your point regarding the power of this EOD engine is one of the reasons y I just love the model. That engine makes you fall in love with the car over and over again especially when I made one 2010 Corolla eat dust on the Kaduna - Zaria highway a short while back. When he eventually caught up at a diversion, he just they look me in a vexed & confused manner. 1 Like |

nas00:awesome post,if only we have Honda owners like you that takes very good care of their cars, all this bad mouthing of one of the best car brand in world will stop, when I see folks talking negatively about Honda I always rush to google to check some of the most reliable and best selling cars in the world, guess what? Honda will always be part of that list,so I just concluded is a Nigerian problem so I don't take them serious again,if at this stage and knowledge we all have both online and offline, you still fear and talk about ball joint issues, honestly to me such a person has no business getting a car,was at one stand 3 days ago, trying to get a car for someone, so I saw a very CLEAN DC,not that I wanted to buy o,I just made an enquiry cos its Nigerian used but very neat, then the guy said its 1.750k last(in the north),after words he said but don't buy Honda o,its not a good car,I asked really why did you say so, I allowed him to finishing talking nonsense, then I told him,I've used that particular car before, and will pick it ahead of corolla, muscle and big for nothing any day any time, suddenly to my greatest surprised, he said his sorry he just wanted to discourage me so as to sell in Pontiac vibe, that he knows the car is a solid car, that its part of selling strategy that he just wanted the car to go,can you imagine such things, then the 2006-2007(Discusion continues)accord even has 166hp,is the EOD 2003-2005 accord that has 160hp...I respect you sir for this post I just read, kudos 2 Likes |

Conner44:The exchanger is hidden in the engine enclosure, he only pointed at something with red and black cable plug on top of the gear box. Very difficult to get a close photograph. Secondly can the gear exchanger be serviced? What is the guarantee it will work effectively again. |

fabienjoe: Read what I wrote carefully, I said "as if" , I didnt say it will pack-up definitlely. When buying a Nigeria used car, one should thread carefully, hope for the best and do a little preparation for the worst. And yes, what you said are valid. |

Good morning house. Please house, I just got a Naija used civic 2008 from Phase 1 and instead of using the oil specification of 5w20, guy man has been using Mobil XHP and he said its what he has been using to service the engine. Please kindly advise: 1. if I can continue with this trend, 2. If I should buy an engine flusher and revert back to the 5w20. And on transmission, guy man has been using the one that I will post it photo here. Your candid advise. Bought the car from Lekki Phase 1 Thanks in anticipation @luvinhubby @kokomo @Rumundele

Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by dru23(m): 3:45am On Oct 08, 2021 |
Phargbemmy: We agree that 20w50 is not the recommended oil .. Since the previous owner has been using 20w50 more than likely for long period of time . There is no use going back to 5w20... You will continue changing oil every 3k miles to avoid sludge (penny wise pound foolish) not ur fault . if the car has not sludge up already. Mobil xhp cost about 9k naira for 4liters........ For transmission fluid.. The recommended fluid by the manufacture is pic below ..Honda Civics engines are known to take abuse... I know these because I have 03 to 05 Civics on uber. I love those little work horses. But their transmissions will not tolerate abuse. I know these because have replace about 2 transmissions in the past... Failure to use the correct fluids will end in tears. Am sure there is a reason for car been sold.......... Maybe the previous owner was having transmission issue that were happening sporadically while driving. Only God knows maybe after you driving it for a while and transmission gets hot and not shifting they way it suppose is when u will now know........... Whether to revert back to manual recommended transmission fluid is a tough choice. I wouldn't do it, transmission fluid is not something you change frequently .. Even Changing frequently while using correct fluid , can still damage the transmission.... Either way good luck

dru23: Thanks @Dru23, so should I just stick to this one he has been using or I change the oil next service? The gear oil though looks a very clean as it was recently serviced. I am still open to more opinions, thanks. @luvinhubby @komomo @Gazzuz |
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by Kokomo: 9:34am On Oct 08, 2021 |
Phargbemmy: If you can still return the car please do, but if you cant then continue using the engine oil used by the previous owner, the car want die. change the gear oil back to the original gear oil, if it packs up at least you can get another gearbox, I will take this risk rather than let the wrong gear oil used by the previous owner damage things further. Just bite the bullet. 1 Like |

nitt: Hahahahaha I wonder what will make a full grown man want to race with a Corolla. You wan die? I used to drive one; it was so under-powered and light weighted. But i will advice that anytime you are faced with such tempting situation, please don't compete by racing. Just smile and move on |

Phargbemmy: Please a friend uses an Honda civic too but 2008 model, he opened the top to have a peep and saw sludge. Please house can engine flush do the miracle? He too uses an XHP on the engine. He is asking if he can use engine flusher to flush the engine, That: 1. Hope the engine flusher is good on his 2008 engine( can he use the general one or there is a special brand), 2. Will it get rid of the said sludge?, and that; 3. Any likely effect and what's the best mean of getting sludge away from the engine |

Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by dru23(m): 11:54am On Oct 08, 2021 |
Phargbemmy: The previous owner has been using the car like that. Don't change anything.. I don't see any point and reverting to factory settings is no point.. My experience from selling cars and doing uber. People tend to sell their car due to issues they foresee or current issues... You just have to observe the issues right.... One thing you can do for now, have a mechanic remove the engine cover . check for any sign of sludge. If there is no sludge at all than you are lucky so far . but if there is sludge, that means you are in trouble of unforseen issues... |

dru23: It actually came with a changed tokunbo engine that was not properly cleaned but was just installed. I and my Mechanic actually clean up the sludge and dirt. Thanks baba 1 Like |
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by dru23(m): 9:50pm On Oct 08, 2021 |
Phargbemmy: A " tokunbo" engine that has sludge is not always a good sign . The sludge may have more than likely damage something internally ...... That been said . once the sludge has been successful clean out .. Henceforth use the recommended engine oil which is 5w20 .. Use full synthetic high mileage oil . full synthetic cleans and prevent sludge. And the remaining sludge hidden in the engine will wash out every time u do an oil change... And full synthetic oil depending on the formulation of the brand additives will give u a longer oil change interval 1 Like |

Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by dru23(m): 5:24pm On Oct 10, 2021 |
Deigofortune: Since it is naija used . I don't know what the previous owner has been using. now if the previous owner follow owners manual than I can suggest a brand...... If the previous owner has been using 20w50 continue using it until the engine packs up......... When you finally do get that nice fresh TOKUNBO car . the following brand will be available
|
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by dru23(m): 5:30pm On Oct 10, 2021 |
Deigofortune: That is good brand .. you have no worries. The 1 you are showing is for 1 time usage.. Meaning once u open up the can , you will have to use it all ..... Meanwhile the ones I brought in . This is currant ones now . it is self sealing ..meaning you can use what you need without wasting the whole can.. And keep the rest for later usage .. Nothing is wasted 1 Like
