The leader of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) jihadist group, Abu Musab al-Barnawi, is dead, Nigeria's top military commander said on Thursday.

ISWAP has not given any confirmation of al-Barnawi's death and Nigeria's army has claimed before to have killed jihadist commanders only for them to reappear.

"I can authoritatively confirm to you that al-Barnawi is dead. As simple as that. He is dead and remains dead," Chief of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor told reporters.

He did not give details on how or when al-Barnawi had died.

Under al-Barnawi, ISWAP became the dominant jihadist force in Nigeria's conflict, striking frequently at troops in an insurgency that has killed more than 40,000 since it begun in 2009.

Al-Barnawi's loss would be blow to ISWAP's structure just as it was consolidating since the death of rival Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau earlier this year during infighting between the factions.

But since splitting with Boko Haram in 2016, the group has shown its resilience and carried out large-scale ambushes on the military just in the last several weeks.

"Should al-Barnawi be dead, his death may not have too much impact on ISWAP because of how structured the group is," said Malik Samuel, a researcher with the Institute for Security Studies.

"Since the 2016 split, ISWAP has had about five leadership changes but the group has maintained its consistency in launching deadly and successful attacks against security forces."

- Son of jihadist leader -

Al-Barnawi is the son of the founder of the Boko Haram militant group, Mohammed Yusuf, who was killed in police custody in 2009 in Maiduguri.

But the ISWAP commander rose to prominence after breaking away from Boko Haram over differences with its commander Shekau, who according to security sources killed himself in May rather than face capture by his rivals.

Since Shekau's death, security sources say, al-Barnawi had consolidated ISWAP's control in Nigeria's northeast and the Lake Chad region but pockets of Boko Haram loyalists have been fighting back.

Last month, ISWAP fighters killed 18 Nigeria security personal in an ambush in northeast Borno state using roadside bombs and rockets in one of the deadliest assaults this year.

A week later another eight soldiers were killed when ISWAP militants opened fire with rockets on another convoy also in Borno.

But Boko Haram jihadists also launched an attack last month on ISWAP militants on the Nigerian side of Lake Chad, ISWAP's bastion, seizing a strategic island, according to fishermen and a security source.

Since Shekau's death in his Sambisa forest enclave, ISWAP has been fighting Boko Haram remnants who have refused to pay allegiance.

Hundreds of Boko Haram members have also since surrendered to the army along with families and children.

More than two million people have been displaced by Nigeria's conflict since it began 2009, and the violence has spread over the borders to Niger, Chad

The Tunisian military announces the success of ballistic and explosive testing phase of its new locally made MRAP called Barb as other testing will be continued to improve its capabilities and add more adjustments before the start the mass production, several prototypes were made and this is the latest one.
Today, the military institution has specialized human resources, competencies and experiences that enable it to keep pace with technological development and engage in manufacturing programs such as the manufacture of marine parts that were completed at half the cost, and the involvement of the General Administration of rolling stock from 1985 until today in the renewal of 1500 military vehicles at half the cost of compensation, which has saved More than 320 million dinars for the state budget.

This renovation experience was followed by a second stage, represented in the re-manufacturing of common equipment, for example the troop carrier, whose cost did not exceed 20% of its real price if it was acquired from foreign markets. The manufacturing experience also allowed it to achieve a national integration rate
Exceeding 60% and achieving a qualitative leap from the stage of renewal to the stage of manufacturing, design training, and the completion of a new technical information system for this type of vehicle.

Proceeding from these experiences and the military institution’s need for special equipment and supplies to develop its operational capabilities to combat terrorism and in view of its high cost, the General Administration of rolling stock and fuel took the initiative to establish a system for the military manufacturing of vehicles and set the stages of completion, which are:

Carrying out preliminary technical studies and completing the necessary designs and computer simulations,
Choosing the components of the vehicle after determining the operational and technical characteristics,
Making a prototype in order to test it to confirm the studies and modify them according to the results of the experiments,
Making a second model after making the necessary modifications and then subjecting it again to field and ballistic experiments using simulations,
Determining the necessary cost of the project and requesting the monitoring of appropriations,
Establishing a production line in the workshops, after preparing and equipping them, in order to fulfill the rest of the needs of the National Army from mine-resistant personnel carriers.
Based on the military industrialization system, the General Administration of rolling stock and fuel, relying on its own competencies, studied, visualized and manufactured the first model of a military chariot called “Barb” in relation to the Barbary horse, which is one of the finest and most endurable horses in North Africa. This vehicle is an anti-mine armored personnel carrier, and the first model was presented on June 24, 2020, on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the resurrection of the National Army.

Thomas Sankara (1949-1987) was unique among late 20th century presidents in Africa and beyond. His political leadership was guided by a pro-people militant activism that brought together strands of radical anti-imperial Pan-Africanism, Marxist-Leninism, feminism, agro-ecological approaches to food justice, and more. Through his electrifying public speeches, his militant activism materialised as one grounded in the urgent and on-going need for concrete decolonization—a revolutionary process that Sankara understood to be protracted, necessarily experimental (in this way, ‘mad’), holistic, and centred on the intellectual liberation of everyday African people, who would be responsible for their own empowerment. For Sankara, women and the rural poor were unavoidably at the forefront of liberation projects.

One or the advantages of small scale light inf ops like Mali apart from blooding a new officer corps and testing weapons systems and tactics is seeing how they stand up to REAL WORLD CONDITIONS.
Glossy brochures and OEM statements more often than differ from the actual!

Dust & rocky roads’ made half of German combat vehicles in Mali inoperative – media

Not jihadi fire as you'd think in an active warzone but more mundane factors have grounded even their CAS!

In the meantime, Die Welt also reported that the German Tiger strike helicopters, which were also sent to Mali and are meant to become fully operational by May 1, have to mostly stay on the ground, as they lack permission to operate at temperatures exceeding 43.26 Grad Celsius, while the average daytime temperature in the area exceeds 44-45 Grad Celsius.
Lurker4long you Saffas have dropped the ball! By now you SHOULD have a simpler Rooivalk lite operational. I know the Original was built to perform hot and high. I've seen or written Apaches struggle in Afghanistan due ro the altitude.

well Denel is fvcked so at this stage Rooivalk export is a pipe dream

Which is unfortunate because in terms of raw performance the Rooivalk demolishes all of its competition

name me an AH with a higher service ceiling, higher in ground effect hover ceiling, higher out of ground effect hover ceiling, better operating temperatures, higher G force rating, higher combat range, higher take off altitude, higher endurance time, not to mention it also ranks in the top 3 in terms of max speed, climb rate, ferry range, sideway speed...... Must I go on?

11 actually with SAAF and 1 with Denel test and development centre..

Anyway this wasn't about export orders but rather about raw performance.... And given your response I would conclude that you were unable to prove any of my assertions wrong

Also Denel can die, that Rooivalk will simply be given back to SAAF making it 12 in service.

Also I'm glad you agree on what I said about the Rooivalk's raw performance cool

The Rooivalk is an example of Africa's inability to work with each other. That bird should be all over the continent as it's main attack helio. No way it would be in that state if it was the EU.
In the EU the major states would manufacture the main parts, some states, components, while others, assembly process. Our leaders are constantly measuring each other up rather than co- operating. Just pathetic. Better Denel became an African defence company that got billions in Funding and the smartest brains on the continent than let all those smart eggs disappear out of the continent. Who knows Spacex, falcon 9/ STARSHIP could have been an African project.

Naive Nairalanders would never support any SA project instead they would demand the "government" to build "our own" combat helicopter.

This has to be the most ignorant comment I've read this year.

The Rooivalk is based on and relies heavily on components and technical expertise from the EU. Especially France.

Why shouldn't Nigerians demand that we build our own?

The benefits in skills, economics and technical expertise are endless.

So why shouldn't we demand it?

South-Africa never had the capacity to build on the 12 units of Rooivalk that were manufactured.

They don't have the technical expertise, finance or political leverage to make the Rooivalk work.

The Rooivalk would be subject to heavy economic sanctions from it's original equipment manufacturers in Europe and America.

As hard as it might sound, the aircraft was doomed for failure, it was never a leadership problem.
