Armed bandits on Wednesday reportedly bombed a train travelling between Abuja and Kaduna, inflicting technical damages on the country’s major rail infrastructure.

Former Senator Shehu Sani said a train he rode between Kaduna and Abuja on Thursday morning nearly derailed because of an explosive that damaged a section of the tracks.

Mr Sani, in a telephone exchange with Peoples Gazette over the incident, said the bandits were targeting the trains in order to dispose of passengers of their cash and other valuable possessions. He also said the attackers opened fire on the train driver.

A spokesman for the Nigerian Railway in Abuja did not immediately return a request seeking comments on Thursday morning.

Bandits have repeatedly targeted the railway between the nation’s capital and the key northern city, which has become the preferred route for passengers seeking to avoid the perilous three-hour journey by road.

The deadly gangs have raided military bases and shot down at least one reconnaissance jet of the Nigerian Air Force. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the military paid a ransom to the bandits to prevent President Muhammadu Buhari’s plane from being shot down.

The president has repeatedly vowed to be ruthless against the attackers largely responsible for widespread abduction and plunder of communities across Nigeria’s northwestern region.

But security agencies are warning that the gangs are becoming more armed with sophisticated combat equipment that would make it more difficult to defeat them.

MNK court case is more relevant for now. The government is more interested in enforcing unity than the lives of its citizenry.

shocked shocked shocked

This is getting more dire as the day goes by. It seems like the more federal government is distracted by IPOB, the more Boko Haram, bandits, jihardists and all manner of terrorists closes in on Abuja.

I heard that Northern politicians are now hysterically begging airlines to open up new routes between Abuja and other state capitals in the North so they can avoid traveling by road. Let's even assume that it's viable for airlines to operate such low traffic routes, what about risks of being shot down?? Which airline would want to risk that now the terrorists are getting anti aircraft missiles?!

How safe do they even think they're in Abuja now??!!!

Shebi they won't arrest innocent Igbo people around and claim it's ESN and IPOB. grin

Dsss can turn black to white.

Mark my words, nothing will happen after this, no checkpoints will be mounted there, no arrests and no body will be shot. All because it's in the north. If this happened in the east, many people will be killed and the police will be blabbing and foaming in the mouths like epileptic patients

Insecurity is a monstrous situation for a developing nation. Politicising it will only promote it.

But bandits are small criminals incapable of terr0rist attacks of such magnitude. They should check well, it must be IPOB that bombed that train. Afterall, Ipob has been tagged terrorists by the lifeless stockfish and his cabal of c0rpses in Aso Villa.

This must be the handwork of Kanu and IPOB cheesy
After invading NDA and shooting down a NAF plane IPOB still has the audacity to attempt to derail a train.
Same IPOB that is terrorizing Zamfara and Katsina state by kidnapping students, the other day IPOB also killed 63 people in Sokoto.
IPOB is also responsible for the poor rate of the naira.
Kai IPOB!

They are not like Kanu and Igboho that want Nigeria to divide

It's just oppressed businessmen showing their frustration
