Some of those EU countries just have big names but not too good for immigrant as a result of their economy and language barrier e.g. Spain, Germany and France

Hmmmm!

Oga, please explain to me how Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and other companies survived

And talking about individuals, don't say what you are not sure of

Europe in general is where your skills will make way for you.

These are old businesses that know how to avoid tax and pay little.

EUROPE is a dead zone for anything success, if you cant speak their various languages, you can't live a good life.

Foreigners in the United states are better off than foreigners in Europe.

OBUKOMENA:
Good evening nairalanders! I hope you had a good day?

So, let me just go straight to my reason for opening this thread, and I hope I would be able to convey my thoughts impeccably:

It seems like some of our people who travelled to Germany aren't doing so well after all (I stand to be corrected, though!)
I have a friend over there whom I am preparing to go meet. This guy has been there since 2017. He hardly calls me on normal call. He would rather call on WhatsApp. Reason being so that he could get in touch cheaply. The first and only time I asked him to send me something, he told me pointblank he didn't have.
Just this afternoon, I heard a colleague's father just came back to Nigeria from there after 21 solid years! He had abandoned his wife and children here in Nigeria. If he was doing so well over there, would he not have arranged for his family to come over and stay with him - at least?

I have been worried, even before I heard this colleague's father thing: I don't know what I am going to meet at the friend's place; I don't know what life is like over there - how to cope in a non-English speaking environment. I don't know how long it's going to take me to make it over there and reconnect with my family. This news about my colleague's dad also increased my worries.

So, I decided I would come on here to ask: Aren't these red flags as regards traveling over there, especially with the hope that when i get there, after 2-3 years, I would bring in my family.
Anyone here knows about life in Germany?

Rich Germans buy houses and move to cheaper european countries. That country is expensive abeg. Its expensive to call on phone. You have to manage WhatsApp, skype etc calls cheesy
If you can do their apprenticeship or get a qualification, it will be nice for you. They value their qualification. Look for a good skill and get training.

OBUKOMENA you meant you just want to smuggle yourself into another man's country without having a properly executed plan?

Those suffering over there are those that didn't plan their lives well. To succeed abroad, you must have a degree and well sort after skills.

What's your plan? What do you intend doing when you get there? In fact, what type of visa are you travelling with?

Your status matters alot to succeed abroad. The reason why some struggle abroad is due to their status. Majority don't have legal status to even work nor reside in the host country.

They hide from January till December. How do you expect such people to be faring as illegal immigrants? Did you ask your friend about his status there?

Do the right thing and ensure you use the right medium to relocate not through illegal relocation.

I doubt if anyone abroad will want to call you on a Normal phone call because honestly that's expensive . So I don't see any fuss about it... And maybe your friend actually don't have what you asked for . You probably don't know if he had some bills to pay etc

The only time people abroad call me with whatsapp is when my network is bad on normal phone call.
I don't think it's as expensive for them as it is for us.

Also,I feel he is not the only one asking that friend for money. How many people does he want to send to?

@ fieryy do you have any input for the OP?

There's nobody that I know (in Germany) that's is not doing well. I know 3 people and they're doing perfectly fine.

You don't expect someone that went there through an illegal route to be doing well because he won't have the papers to hustle.

You don't expect someone that could not tell the in demand skills or knowledge and go for it, to be doing well.

You don't expect someone that is doing menial jobs, paying bills and other things to be sending money to you in Nigeria because they don't pick money overseas. He has a family to take care of too so stop being a burden to him.

You don't exprct someone that went there and got carried away with the enjoyment - good system, freedom and quality of life to make money, save more and invest.

There are people making millions and yet they can't account for it but there are people making thousands and they have investments, no debts, and are living comfortably.

Every mallam with him own kettle.

If you want to go over there, just ensure that you're going through the right route and then go for skills/education that are in demand. Abtoad isn't Nigeria. Most technical skills, health related professions and handworks pay more because their citizens don't stress themselves with such. They (majority) prefer easy jobs like customer service, office admin, supply chain management, bank teller, restaurant manager, HR, executive assistant, business administration, etc. So, don't expect to get such jobs when there are many locals to do them. Racism aside, employers will prefer locals to do that over you.

Again, try to call your friend in Germany from Nigeria and see how much you'll be charged just for a minute call.

My brother, in abroad, a cent is valued. No money is small over there. If you're not financially disciplined, you won't have anything to show for your many years of working and living there.

Most of those people abroad live average life, which is quality too. They earn well, eat well, have good healthcare and enjoy a working system. The key thing is to make enough money in hard currency and do great things in Nigeria, which makes you a rich man in Nigeria.

Also, if you're planning to go and stay with your friend over there, be ready to have your own cash cos he won't be paying house rent, water bills, internet and electricity bills for you. You guys will be sharing it.

There's gold in Germany and some good countries too but know what you're going there for. Don't go there with the mindset of just doing small jobs that will pay you €8 or 12 euros per hour because it seems a big money when converted to naira. Have a skill or go for an indemand skill or course that will set you up for life.

Remember, make the money there, save and invest.

You're pretty woke.
What a "good morning" mindset you have.

I'm not sure it is necessarily because of cost. If you have unlimited data you pay for, why spend more putting those calls through? There are plans that come with some minutes of international calls but most don't end up using theirs since they can easily reach people in what's app and make video calls with it.

Soooo because someone is calling you on WhatsApp and he didn't get you what you wanted, it means he isn't doing well??I and most of the Diasporeans on NL have all done the above statement, does that mean we aren't doing well?? Africans!!!! YOU that has NEVER traveled there before, is making this analysis. You need to stay your ass in Nigeria and continue with your Okada runs!

Take it from someone who lives abroad (real abroad o!). If you have a vision for your life, it may die abroad. You may end up in a small apartment with electricity, cheap Coca Cola and fatty burgers. You may get married and have kids. Soon, you will start consoling yourself with the lie that you did it for your children. The truth is, you sacrificed your dreams. Before you know it, you are 50 and the thought of coming back to Naija with nothing to fall back on haunts you. Even your friends would have moved on, some of them significantly better than you. So, to save face, you stay back. Out of frustration, you insult Nigeria from abroad and say she will never be well, but deep down, you know it's frustration.

See ehn, make I tell you the truth, if you have a steady income that is reasonable in Nigeria, seek ways to build additional sources of revenue. Choose a quiet state/city to live in and enjoy your life.

I am not saying you shouldn't travel o! So many Nigerians/immigrants are doing well also. Just think am well, because the abroad of the mid-80s and early 90s that our uncles went to doesn't exist anymore.

Make e be like dat.

Vacations aren't a big deal in Europe. You can travel to 3 different countries for vacay on less than 150 pounds, which evidently is affordable for a minimum wage earner. Visa isn't required for travel and air ticket is ridiculously cheap.

@OBUKOMENA: No country is a bed of roses. Every country has citizens that feel their government can do better. They have opposition politicians that feel the government in power is a disaster. Some citizens only see gloom and doom while others feel they'll rather keep pushing till things get better for them (you may not realize this until you actually travel out). Believe it or not, there are some foreigners in Nigeria who feel they're better off here than in their own country. Immigration is not a new phenomenon, it is as old as time itself. And it may not always be the solution to all the problems of the immigrants. It is what it is.

If you do not have a valid and legit permit that will allow you to work and live in Germany, don't go anywhere near the country or any other country in Europe for that matter. It is the millions of individual Africans without paper who keep complaining about how hard life is in Europe. You'll end up working menial jobs regardless of your academic or professional qualifications. It is now very difficult to find someone to marry for papers unlike in the very early noughties when all you had to do was get a visitor visa, hop on a plane to Europe and the law will turn a blind eye to your arranged marriage. Don't waste the greater part of your youth.

Maybe you should reread my post to grasp the crux of my comment. Since the Op is feeling conflicted about emigrating to Germany on account of the economic status (either real or imagined) of others that are either there presently or once lived there, then maybe he needs to reevaluate his purpose for going abroad, lest he ends up disappointed.

The best that any foreign country can offer an immigrant are better economic opportunities. But even with that, such countries are bound to present their own unique challenges. Therefore, intended immigrants should 'shine their eyes' and manage their expectations so that they don't end up disappointed. Comprende??

You cant get rich in Germany....riches and wealth are Frank upon in Germany.

The tax system is a killer for businesses and for private individuals. Every damn thing is taxed

As a foreigner, if you can't speak German, just forget about getting employed there or be ready to work as a cheap laborer. Even foreign students hardly get good jobs after graduation. Germany is for germans alone....the Turkish people in Germany, have found ways to survive by owning small kebabs shops and restaurants.

Germany is the biggest and richest economy in Europe but i wont advice my enemy to go there, you are better off in a English speaking country.

See this zombie.

Say what you know! It still shocks me that a typical Nigerian (especially a BMC) would adjudge taxation evil. No, Sir! Germany and a lot of these first world nations are self-sufficient because taxes are put to good use. They even have enough to loan your lifeless President.

But no, Nigerians want to enjoy the good things of life, or the lack thereof, without paying taxes.
