Most people without engineering or structural knowledge are just speaking out of ignorance.Nigerians are quick to pass judgement.
Let me point out few things fyi:
1. No structure of that magnitude will be constructed without a detailed structural design and analysis by a certified structural engineer, this is done using advanced softwares.
2. That certification and approval which most people are basing their argument for condemnation are dependent on the results of the design as stated above.
3.The developer can't use a substandard material or go against the design details knowing the implication of that decision.
4. If the design state Y20 reinforcement rod and the producer uses scrap metal with less tensile strength as but same diameter, this becomes the issue with SON and not the developer because son gave the approval for the existence or importation of all the building materials

My point is that most times the fault lies with the producers of building materials and not the Engineers or the construction team.
This same Italian team can construct same building in Italy and it will exceed the functional and structural requirements but if materials are sourced within Nigeria and using same building codes it gives different outcome.

Another angle am also considering is why would the building collapse at the exact time the owner is in the building....it is more than coincidence..... you get my point now.

Nigerians and their obsession for non indigenous professionals though.
I don't even know how they come to this skewed conclusion that every white man should be better than his black counterpart.

That because majority of Nigerians are corrupt minded, so they believe white can do it better...

Believe me, I have worked in a construction company before, where site engineers and some workers used 5bags of cements where they are suppose to use 10bags of cement....

The remaining 5bags, they will sell it...

I worked as the office manager of the company then, so I go to site twice a week to see level of work...

Believe me, we Nigerians are too corrupt

I hope he comes out of this alive.
Lol...you may be right though..the building collapse is more of a structural failure than the architectural design.

Religion plays no role in the collapse of buildings, it is purely a technical matter

If that building was handled by Julius Berger or G Cappa, it would not have collapsed

Point of correction sir...A developer may not use substandard materials but then they can go against design details.

They may be the best in Europe or anywhere else, once u are working with Nigerians, be sure to fail. The workers alone can steal all the materials u put in place and use either substandard ones or less quantity. A beam that is supposed to be of 5/8 rods, Nigerians would rather use 1/2 inch rod and even go further to reduce the quantity. Where they are supposed to use 100bags of cement, Nigerian workers will use 40 bags and sell the remaining 60 and call it "runs". I sorry for this country. Meanwhile I pity suppliers who colluded with contractors to defraud the builder, their money don loss cos nobody will pay for any material that was used and the house still collapsed. Nigerian is a mess.

Femi Osibona, the developer of 360 Degrees Towers is seen here inspecting the multi-storey buildings in Lagos with his Italian architects and engineers a while back.

Osibona, was reportedly on a visit to the site of the building when it collapsed on Gerard Road, Ikoyi today. He is presently trapped inside with colleagues, workers and security details. We hope he and the others survive.

I dont know who is trying to cut corners here...but all I know is dat I wish those trapped well..now is the time to see if Nigeria cares about you or you were just a walking corpse prior to this event..cos in this country its every man for himself..just pray better problem no jam you u go know how far..I remember some months ago when some miners were trapped hundreds abi thousands of feet underground their lives had meaning to their nation..let's see if yours have meaning to our nation..God be with your families and loved ones at this trying moment. And this is a wake up call to all who think they can cut corners...anything that has to do with human lives try not to cut corners...no make 50block when you suppose make 25, no use substandard rod.

You guys should not blame the owner of the building. He is neither the architect or the civil engineers handling the project. There cannot be cutting of corners if the engineers do not approve. He relied on professionals who failed him. It is the professionals that would insist that the right thing be done. Constructing that kind of building would not have been given to ordinary day labourers without a professional in put.

Hold it with your conspiracy theory, the building collapsed because it was substandard even the former consultants who handled the first two towers stated same thing.
Before na innocent people you want make e collapse on top? E collapse on the main culprits.

You can now see that the government and the media are trying to cover things up for the owner and the contractor.

Up till this moment, the owner's name is yet to be mentioned, and no arrest picture have surfaced in the media after 20 hours.

Very bad...

my brother oyinbo DT is certified in his country is beta o.talking frm wat have see in companies here.nigerians we be big incompetent crooks.d architect is not at fault but d contractor/engineer Nd developer.let me give u an example someone was telling me he said in Nigeria most house owners will give u 10k for architect design for a 5m to 20m house instance of 500k or 1m .secondly he said u will tell a house owner d rite cement to use so DT d wall will be a re-enforce wall d owner of d house project will tell u u talking gibberish Nd prefer builders cut corner method because is cheap.another example is d church DT collapse in akwa ibom DT could kill d governor of d state someone was saying DT d boy dt did d roof is inexperience he went to put a heavy metal beam on few pillars d weight over time was too much.architect most times no get fault .but dis one lag govt said it seal up d place na to ask d developers.AS FOR TWN PLANNING THOSE ONE ARE DIED.because A DIRECTOR OF MINISTRY OF TWN planning doesn't knw WAT IS A MASTER PLAN.

If after investigation it was revealed that the developer derailed from the design details he will be held liable for the collapse.
Having read about more details coming out am buying into the thought of poor construction because no properly design structure will collapse without warning ( showing signs of failure).
Before the collapse they should have been noticeable signs like crack, bending/tilting of the structure and partial collapse but what am seeing look more like a controlled demolition hence why I wondered on the timing of the collapse...at a time the owner is in the building. There's more which only a detailed investigation can reveal.

Engineering fails are one of the loudest professional fails we have of all professions.

More emphasis must be given to the actual engineering than political or economic ends during projects.

May God be with the families of all affected.

Meanwhile, hope the claim that the owner was killed there isn't away to avoid taking responsibility for the failure?

Actually, the average Nigerian is incompetent at his craft. This does not mean that there are no competent Nigerians. Look around you. It shouldn't be hard to spot incompetence lurking.

The top non bank (Nigeria banks are another story) Nigerian companies are almost all having foreign senior leadership.

Extremely hard to find well run Nigerian companies rivalling the likes of MTN, Airtel , Shell, Total, Nestle, Julius Berger etc, without expatriates.

God help us.
