What can we boast of in this country?

As a former survivor of a building collapse, lemme tell you what it's like..

It's like a dream, one minute you're seeing the sunlight the next minute, it's darkness, you find yourself in an awkward position unable to move face/ mouth/eyes covered in debris. You have zero idea what is going on, you can't open your mouth to shout , it take nearly 30minutes to realise you're trapped, it's extremely hot and your lungs struggle to find air. Most people faint out of air deprivation and shock.
You shout but you only hear your own voice, 70% of the time , you're unable to move, you just lie there and try to access the damage, which of your legs or arms are broken or trapped, for someone who stayed under for two days, by luck, I could find a break out that channeled air and sunlight, many aren't that lucky,at nights, you're covered with different creeping and crawling bugs, you just pray you don't get bitten by a snake, roaches and ants are all over you., Rain even though you think is a problem is actually one of the best blessings, it brings water, cools the temperature and reduce the bugs, if the rain is heavy it can help U move large rocks ,one second day, there was heavy downpour, and I was able to push a heavy rock which trapped by leg under the water and climb upwards to escape.

Most of the effort will have to come from the people trapped than rescue workers ,(as per naija). The biggest scare is when they move ther bulldozer around and rocks from top falls on you, you just pray for luck while you lie there.

A good rescue team will instead of using bulldozer they'd first send in a pipe than transmit, cold air and oxygen into the collapse spot to supply air, then they measure thickness of the rocks, areas with light thickness are drilled and an opening formed where they go in and build mini pillars to hold the building from dropping further, they read heat waves of place to see signature of human movement and then target those areas. Ours are just outside shouting and using hammer to hit rocks . The sad statistics is that on the 5th , 97% of people trapped are likely to die

Beg the same developer to use that money & build 21 hospital beds in his community that won't cost more than 15m; then boom you will hear something like am not in the govt of any form..
I read that the developer was on site when the building collapsed so he may be one of the dead. May their souls rest in peace.

Lagos is just an overrated urban jungle I swear, that city stinks to the core, from humans living there to infrastructure to houses to traffic to everything in fact, may their souls rest in peace, it is a tragedy, I feel for the families of the lost loved ones..

See what the mistake of one person trying to cut corners has caused the death of many. May their gentle soul rest in peace.

Rescue team are doing their part....

Is that how they rescue people where they value human life?

When they say the cause of building collapse is substandard building materials, what do they mean? Is it that the cement, rod, sand, or stone is substandard? If it is the cement, why not say Dangote cement or BUA is substandard?

And I use to think that high rising buildings are constructed using mostly steels and not concrete pillers. Anyway I am not an engineer, so I don't know much about that.
It is not dangote or Bua issue here. If you have been following, you will see the builders were togolese and Nigerians that will use 5 bag of cement for 1 trip of sand.

The foundation did not hold because of many factors and not cements

There is cement mix, there is concrete Mix, there is rod size. Use the wrong mix , use the wrong rod and you have a sub-standard (below standard structure). Using bar 16 when structural design says bar 32. etc

Put 21 stories on foundation of 15stories on a soil whose bearing capacity has already being calculated before construction, another sub-standard factor.

Hope you get now...if you don't forget abourrit

This goes beyond Lagos. Stop the hate and face the fact that Nigerians are greedy and don't care about excellence. Always looking for ways to cut corners.
I'm sure you'll even be worse if given the opportunity to be at the helms of affair

That building was remotely destroyed, same thing they did with synagogue guest house. Building don't collapse and met like that. It goes but by bit with time. Same trick they played with 9/11

What if the cement was okay?

But the mixtures were not?

There are more to it than the quality of the building materials..

I understand all these. Thank you. But why say substandard materials. Wouldn't it be better to say they are not following the standard code?

Yes that is why I felt they shouldn't say substandard materials because I believe the materials are standard but they are not used in the appropriate way.

It means that the premises was fully occupied as of the time the building collapsed. Plastering laborer's, food sellers/ogogoro might've been involved. Anyway it's a sad thing that such poor structural work was done. Waste of lives and resources.

Reminds me of when I was building , my engineer(tribe withheld) was so quack that even as I'm not an engineer I detected some foul play, the mixture of my cement was so Sandy tht I stopped the work. He was so furious and left the site that he is not building, that was my salvation. The next day I sent for a letter of termination of contract asap. He started acting cold and hiding. I took my PA and went to his office, and demanded he sign the goddam papers or else we'll deal with him in the office right their. He signed it and that's how I built a massive duplex at peace. You see don't be decieved that you cant achieve the best quality. Forget cost and embrace durability.
Who asked you for all these stories now? huh

yes, I know but my problem is that they keep accusing building for being at fault when it's actually how the materials are used. But if they keep insisting that it is substandard building materials, then they should mention the names of the substandard ones
