A Truck Driver Beats New Jersey Senate President After Spending $153 On Campaign

This is an extraordinary story of how a truck driver that knew nothing about politicking set out to defeat a seating senate president in New Jersey with a paltry $153 campaign fund! This a lesson that money does not win election but vision does.

New Jersey’s longest-running state Senate president has lost his seat to a truck driver who spent only $153 on Dunkin and paper fliers over the course of his campaign.

Steve Sweeney, the Democratic Senate president in NJ, has lost to Edward Durr, a furniture company truck driver. With 98% of the vote counted, Sweeney remained about 2,000 votes short of Durr when The Associated Press called the race Thursday morning.

The loss by one of New Jersey’s most powerful politicians will result in upheaval of political power in the state, forcing the Senate to find a new president. Sweeney has been the chamber’s leader since 2010.

Just four years ago, he won reelection in what at the time may have been the most expensive legislative race in American history.

Surely not Nigerian politics..
In this part of the world, a senator will start from the very first day he/she resumes office to save money for the next election in 4years time.

Nigeria is just pitiable

Yes it can. Election is a game of number. We don't need excess money from Godfathers to win an election. I cannot imagine why we will allow our country to be managed by illiterates and nincompoop in the days of digital world. Banning of twitter is a prime example of how they want to hold us back.

If the youth can start an a telegram group and select who should hold office, we will not only outnumber old men like the Liar Mohammed, we will retire them to where they belong. We need a mobilizer!

@Lalasticlala
I wish you could take this to front page so the youths can discuss this. Nigeria needs a breakout of good leadership!

Moral of the story.
To beat APC or PDP, you must be a truck driver.

That’s how PDP’s relatively unknown candidate would defeat the political heavyweight that APC would present in 2023.

You can see that even though The Democrats are in power in both the federal and in New Jersey, it didn’t stop the senate president from getting beaten.

But in Nigéria because of poverty, Maduka will build schools, hospitals, churches, buy transformers

Sanwo Olu will spend millions just to go to UK every morning to dorbale for Tinubu and make breakfast for him

Okowa will travel to London prison 2 times a week just to serve Ibori starch and Owo soup or banga soup.

Nothing like the people's choice in Nigéria election.

Some Nigerians will just want to associate with every success story of events that happened/keeps happening abroad; but same people will never support such good thing to happen in our own country.

If not, we should have gone past the level where Tinubu, Atiku, Saraki, Orji Uzor Kalu, Ganduje, Tambuwal, etc, is being considered for President ahead of people like Osinbajo, Peter Obi, Adewunmi Adeshina, Okonjo-Iweala, etc.

Such terrible set of people, I tell ya!

This is attainable when the political space is not being governed by greedy and heartless godfathers.

We will get here someday but Unfortunately, our generation may not witness it.

Anyways, there is hope on the horizon as election in Nigeria is getting more difficult to rig by the day.

Anambra please make us proud!

The victory is more of luck than politics...

He simply rode of the hatred the citizens have for the other candidate...

A similar scenario occurred in 2011 during the Imo State gubernatorial elections when Owelle Okorocha Rochas won against incumbent Ikedi Ohakim

Congrats to him!

wrong assertion.

Money does win election, especially in the US. This guy is one out of a million.
In the US, money goes a long way. In fact they will tell you that your ability to raise money means acceptance hence a vindication that you deserve re-election. This is why a vast majority of those in Congress have been there for decades simply because they are able to raise more money than their challengers.
Money factor is also why so many have been crying out loud for Campaign finance reforms for decades as far I can remember but those in the seat of power are not bulging because they have the upper hand already to raise more money than their challengers.

Pls stop taking one of a kind story and trying to make it sounds like money is not important in US. It's very very important.
You are just confusing the youths on this forum who already have a false sense of what the US is really all about.
