That policy was a silly policy. It may have seemed great when only hundreds go to school but they should have foreseen a time when millions would go to school and realized the unsustainability of free education in the face of low tax collection.

The socialist policies of AG has created a lot of economic problems in Western Nigeria (trade unions and unlawful cartels, bloated civil service, etc). It also made a lot of people give birth to kids they can't take care of because they believed the government would take control. If people understood that education has a real cost, then they will birth less children and also hold politicians more to account. But if it's free, what are you going to say? Dilapidated schools are a result.
It was not silly per se. It achieved its purposes then. Time leads to adaptation. It's not Awolowo's fault that his good intentions were abused subsequently. It's incumbent on the successive governments to adapt to changing times and manage those assets and policies productively. China has child policy. Control of population is an area we have failed woefully. Failing to plan population is failing the economy. It's simple. You cannot have a party and fail to factor the number of attendees and you plan successfully.

That's not the university's problem. In the US, Ole Miss and Harvard won't charge the same amount. They also won't admit the same kind of students. The socialist mentality that education should be made free or low cost cannot work in a country with hundreds of millions of people. You want to be treated by a doctor who barely saw a stethoscope during training? Because that's what would happen if the university keeps charging pittance and admitting a lot of students.

U are talking like someone who has already cash out from the system and your family future has already been secured in this same country. What a pity. Assuming u climb a ladder to reach the top of the chain don't other deserve such experience with their family in their lifetime. After all u brought up Harvard. Where is Harvard located ? Is it moon. (jokes). Harvard is in United States. What is the economy and social life in the state. Do we run same system or wage structure or leadership foresight. Gentleman, when God shine his grace on you and alive in this country never despise the poor who have continued to bear the brunt of continuous cycle of bad leadership.

It's not wickedness. It's commonsense. What you should be talking about is that government should create policies that can enable people afford these fees.

Education has a cost. Someone has to pay. If the fees are low and government does not pay, the quality of education will be terrible, these are doctors for heaven's sake. The bright ones among them will eventually go abroad after getting degree at low cost compared to their western peers. That's a big drain on the country's resources.

Let people pay market cost. The government can come in with loans (backed with an income share agreement as collateral), scholarships for academically bright students and talented sports people, grants by charity organizations, bursaries etc. That's how education is funded not every time ASUU strike because the university has to rely on government ad nauseam

There should also be a greater check on who gets to go to university. Imagine people scoring 160/400 in Jamb and still being allowed to go to university?

So in your opinion, the increment should come before making the right policies to cushion the effect. Did you even hear yourself?
Do you think I will be hear replying you if the situation of the country is any better? Oga bye bye. Go sleep

If we Chaneled all these insult and Buhari blame game to our governors, our states would have been doing well without the federal govt, if you don't turn a blind eye and put all the blame on Buhari while our state governors loot our little state allocations away. Lagos did it without federal during Obasanjo. Get sense, don't be a zombie

Yes. But then it should not be as high as 2.2m! Mismanagement is the bane of Government policies.

Do you know the cost of a dental procedure or Chemotherapy?

A typical Chemotherapy in Naija costs almost the same elsewhere (e.g. India).

Dentistry is a six year course. That means they will be paying N13.47 million before they graduate from the university.

There are poor people everywhere and you are conflating many issues. Yes, there is corruption and there is bad leadership but that's not the point of discussion. The point is education has a cost and it must be paid somehow.

In the past, a student who knows he is poor excels academically in order to get a scholarship. That's how it happens in the US or Canada, for example. You can't be poor and still be an average student, hoping the government subsidize your education. Sooner or later, fees would have to be massively increased in Nigerian universities. The discussion must be centered on what can be done to make people be able to afford it. And it's the same thing as I have said earlier on, a combination of scholarships and student loans.

The role of the Unversity system is to provide skills and education that will prepare the student to seek employment opportunities beyond the minimum wages. Education cannot be cheap.
You are right. I don't have a problem with trying to fund the university system through fees but it has to be reasonable to some extent considering the fact that the parents of these students are not earning above 30 thousand naira minimum wage which is not even guaranteed.

Do you know when Germany started existing as a country?

Do you know Germany's GDP?

Upon education is free, do you know how many Germans go to college?

You are looking at the surface? You do not know how they got there or what they put in place to get there.

Do you know how much school fee is in South Africa or Ghana?

So Germany started with very corrupt officials who ruled and looted with impunity and never cared about developing their country ?

This same state governor shouting no money will leave office tomorrow and efcc will be chasing him for looting billions of state funds.
Let them first block all the leakages before bringing hardship upon people.

At least consider the plight of the people.. how many high paying jobs are in that state?

Whether they increase or not is not my business but I'm telling you for free that EDUCATION HAS A COST. Everything from lecturer's salary to cost of equipment in the lab to the standard of teaching hospitals depends on the amount of tuition paid. These are doctors. A faulty education for a doctor would end up killing lots of people directly or indirectly. If you like be emotional about it.

Our politicians are not only power corrupt, they are also power blind.Asking the children of common man to pay millions as school fee is an act of total wickedness. Many of our politicians are products of free education and now they want to deprive the children of the common man the opportunity to education. That is very bad.

As one of his former students, i remember his telling us how he enjoyed free education etc as student. He graduated from oau as well.

Oau professors always boast about it even the current V.C of the institution and host of others attest to this but see now they fail this generation while they had the best of life during own time whilst students.

Anyone who can't afford it should drop out. Education is a choice. If a Ghanaian university quotes 12,000 USD as tuition for foreign students, do people protest? No, you find a new school that matches your budget. Many of these medical students want to pay peanuts to get a medical degree then vamoose to UK or Saudi Arabia to earn same salaries with doctors from other countries who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as school fees. Such arbitrage must stop.
exactly! Be os education is so cheap we must all.fo to.unibersirt - waste government money and then be doing accountant turned tailor , emhineer turned shoe maker - instead of going to fashion school and shoe making school from the get go..
We need good secondary education and then standard schools for skill acquisition .
Not everybody must go to university

You have made a lot of excellent points, and as usual, people are busy abusing you up and down.

The truth is, education is expensive. Yet, because of government economic polices, our economy is not growing, and thus jobs are limited...and as a result...getting a degree cheaply and quickly so that one can compete for limited jobs is very very important here.

But the truth is, we can't keep education cheap for ever and ever. Hostels are in bad shape, and inadequate, facilites are poor and so on. So, fees go up, or we do things like removing subsides, and so forth.

Elementary education (i.e. the ability to read and write) should be the only form of Free and Mandatory education.

Well, if things weren't destroyed by Corruption, the source of funding won't be an issue.

Because our economy would have gotten bigger and better from what was obtainable then.
