As if there is a job out there waiting for you after paying all these exorbitant fees. Students are to pay 2.2 million naira when the minimum wage is thirty thousand naira. Make it make sense please.
During the AAUA saga also, a lot of students who could not afford the increment drop out from school.
No to go learn one trade na. No be by force to go school na. As for me o! I go just withdraw from school, go find one business do

Most of those sitting over these callous decisions are beneficiaries of Western Nigeria free education of Chief Awolowo's Government. Without that they wouldn't be educated not to talk of being able to access the opportunities they now have. It is very hard-breaking. Their children are away in foreign countries and the poor can go to hell. It is well. The hens will certainly come home to roost!

All this things you stated still falls under bad government policies and corruption.

Take for example, why will electricity generation be on the "exclusive list" - which means only federal government can generate power.

As a private organisation, if you generate above 25MW, you will be required to direct it to National Grid.

And the National Grid does not have enough capacity to distribute all the power being generated (as a matter of fact, most generating companies in Nigeria generate Below their Capacity because DISCOS don't have the capacity to distribute.)

2. State Owned companies failed, not because they aren't run like private, but mostly because of corruption.

Imagine most of those who looted Nigeria Airways are currently in government. Many of them even founded their own airline after killing Nigeria airways.

With all the investigations that followed suit, and the report indicting people, No one has been prosecuted so far.

I do agree with you that we have to go industrial, as we can't just be exporting raw materials, but this will only be possible if government makes policies that support industrialisation.

It's the responsibility of the government to make policies that will support industrialisation bring investors into the country.

But so far, How many investor - friendly policy have the government made?

How easy is it to get a License to start a company, without bribing people?

How easy is it to start a company without getting killed by multiple taxation and bad government policies?

Like I said earlier, we are where we are today because of bad government policies and corruption.

If good policies have been brought up and implemented along the line, we won't be here today, and funding would never be an issue.

Good day.

God bless you ..

Impunity is what is killing us

No body is held accountable for the failure of the system..

The entire system failed due to poor governance ..

No matter the budget , someone must loot the money and get away with it ..

Even if the price is hiked, there is no guarantee the quality of education will improve.
We must kill corruption in this country

If these were tuition fees in the 70s, would the vice chancellor himself, have been able to go to university.?.. that generation that got all these things for free , and now destroying for the younger ones need to be expunged. The enjoyed free education , free car loans etc they were the golden generation that had the opportunity to build the most powerful black nation... they wrecked It and even till date they're still refusing to retire.

Thete were tution fees in the 1970s by the way.

Poor students paid for them via scholarships.

Also back in the 1970s not everyone went to university. Admissions were.far more restrictive then. You had to pass your waec very very well .

This is outrageous! Mass dropouts loading. In this era when doctors too are looking for jobs. Many of them are in private hospitals collecting average of 100 thousand naira monthly

Anyone who can't afford it should drop out. Education is a choice. If a Ghanaian university quotes 12,000 USD as tuition for foreign students, do people protest? No, you find a new school that matches your budget. Many of these medical students want to pay peanuts to get a medical degree then vamoose to UK or Saudi Arabia to earn same salaries with doctors from other countries who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as school fees. Such arbitrage must stop.

Pataricatering:
exactly! Be os education is so cheap we must all.fo to.unibersirt - waste government money and then be doing accountant turned tailor , emhineer turned shoe maker - instead of going to fashion school and shoe making school from the get go..
We need good secondary education and then standard schools for skill acquisition .
Not everybody must go to university

The tuition fees should be made to reflect the average income of the society.
What you guys don't realise is that song of "drop out if you can't afford it" will end up creating vicious cycles of illiteracy which is directly proportional to poverty.
And this waste of government money you're talking about is very wrong in my opinion. Government spending money to subsidise education is not a waste, it is to reduce illiteracy and a long-term investment on her citizens. When this money is "not wasted" on education, where does it always end up BTW? You don't need to be told.

Well scholarships are widely available and yes you have to hustle for them .

Back in the 1970s scholarships were not dashed out for free. You often times had to write exams to get them. And you had to be at a certain academic level to even qualify

Also there were relatively fewer students in university today compared to now so government could easily find money for the scholarships and grants then. Not now when there are far more students and far more universities

At the end ofthe day education costs money

There are no scholarships sponsored by the schools themselves.. we have scholarships sponsored by shell etc that's different. The v.c and average bran didn't pay exubtantly for education that's why he's a v.c.

Education for private schools maybe super expensive but for govt schools......... bros. It's too expensive . If they want to reduce population then increase cut off marks. This new fees will put brilliant brains out of school. It's a freaking govt school that gets allocations.. so what do you mean education is expensive?.

1. They all paid heavily for education back then and hustled for scholarships back then.

2. If you want good government schools then government needs to earn far more money than we earn now. And that means higher taxes or higher fees.

You jumped over the suggestion that they can increase cut off marks.. why is the only solution increasing fees plus... pls don't mislead people. They didn't pay the equivalent of what is obtainable now. And they even got free feeding and housing etc wtf. Then when they became vc they destroy it for the younger ones. If the structures cannot handle the volume of students as you claim then increase cut off and stricter sieving process.

1. The reason why fees have to be increased is because the education sector doesn't have enough cash

We spend about 1.6 billion dollars on education last year. South Africa spent 24 billion dollars.

2. You guys should vote out APC and PDP and vote in a new government that would lead us down the path of industrial growth

3. Raising cut off marks doesn't solve the funding problem and may even deny many poor people access to education.

Nope, dead serious.

Nigerian doctors in training pay a pittance compared to their lifetime earnings. How many of them (especially the ones running abroad ) have ever donated anything to their Alma matter? They get extremely subsidized education and go abroad to enjoy the benefits (thanks to wasteful governments who don't reason correctly). Their colleagues from foreign universities pay through the nose for medical education.
