Why Babajide Advised Nigerian Army to Use Mi-35P Helicopters Rather Than Tucano Jets
News Hub Creator
A renowned Nigerian Journalist, Babajide Kolade Otitoju, recently advised the Nigerian Army regarding the types of weapons to use in the war against the insurgents terrorizing the Northern part of the country.

Babajide's advice is contrary to the opinions of some Nigerians who got excited after the Tucano Jets arrived in Nigeria. The development has since led me to dissect some points raised by Babajide and the available facts about attack helicopters.

(Tucano Jets)

Babajide advised the Nigerian Army to purchase more attack helicopters with night fighting capability. Attack helicopters are sometimes called helicopter gunships due to the heavy military weapons and equipment they carry. They are highly effective against military vehicles and fortifications. Attack helicopters fly at low altitudes. They are closer to the targets, and they deliver more effective impacts. Babajide was also precise about the need for night fighting capability on the attack helicopters he suggested, as this can help the military carry out surprise attacks when it is dark.

Babajide named the Mi-35P a 'killing machine' that he claims the Nigerian Air force already has in its arsenal. The Mi-35P has excellent speed and transport-combat capabilities. This feature is vital as insurgents in the North are notorious for moving on fast motorcycles. My findings also reveal that the Mi-35P can provide fire support for Army units on the battlefield. The said helicopter is effective for the search and engagement of armoured and vehicles without armour. The qualities of the Mi-35P helicopter can match the requirements of the war against insurgents in the North. It is effective for carrying out operations in the air day and at night during various weather conditions.

The bandits and terrorists are known for hiding in forests while ambushing communities in the nighttime. Ground attack helicopters can deeply penetrate such hiding places and flush out criminals from their camps. Fighter jets have their areas of strength too, but the Army has to fit the square peg in the square holes. The environment and the enemy's mode of operations are vital in determining the types of weapons used in combat.

EMB-314 Super Tucano cockpit

The all-glass cockpit is fully compatible with night-vision goggles. Brazilian AF ALX aircraft are equipped with avionics systems from Elbit Systems of Haifa, Israel, including a head-up display (HUD), advanced mission computer, navigation system, and two 6in x 8in colour liquid crystal multi-function displays.

The head-up display with 24° field of view and the advanced weapon delivery system are integrated through a MIL-STD-1553B data bus. The pilot is provided with a hands-on throttle and stick (HOTAS) control.

The pilot is protected with Kevlar armour and provided with a zero/zero ejection seat. The clamshell canopy, hinged at the front and rear and electrically activated, is fitted with a de-icing system and features a windshield capable of withstanding, at 300k, the impact of a 4lb bird. A Northrop Grumman onboard oxygen generation system (OBOGS) is installed.

Weapons The aircraft is fitted with two central mission computers. The integrated weapon system includes software for weapon aiming, weapon management, mission planning and mission rehearsal. Onboard recording is used for post mission analysis.

There are five hardpoints for carrying weapons, and the aircraft is capable of holding a maximum external load of 1,500kg. The aircraft is armed with two wing-mounted 12.7mm machine guns with a rate of fire of 1,100 rounds a minute and is capable of carrying general-purpose bombs and guided air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. Brazilian AF aircraft are armed with the MAA-1 Piranha short-range infrared guided air-to-air missile from Orbita.

The two-seat AT-29 is fitted with a forward-looking infrared AN/AAQ-22 SAFIRE turret on the underside of the fuselage. The SAFIRE thermal imaging system supplied by FLIR Systems is for targeting, navigation and target tracking. The system allows the aircraft to carry out night surveillance and attack missions. In July 2012, Embraer and Boeing signed a cooperation agreement to add new weapons integration capacity on the A-29 Super Tucano to satisfy the requirements of the US Air Force LAS programme.

Savis, Bradar and Rockwell Collins entered an agreement with Embraer to improve the defence applications of the aircraft in April 2017. The radar technology is integrated into the Rockwell Collins FireStorm™ system to improve fire precision of the aircraft.

For Terrorists that have RPGs, they should use helicopters? Mvmu

If they can't use the tucano, why did they buy it? Probably to use it on southerners who want to secede.

That why prime Terrorist sponsor, Bubu, was doing everything possible to make d world see ipob as Terrorists, so he can deploy the Tucanos there.

The world is watching him and his terr0rist handlers in Aso Rock. Whether they will use the jets on Bokoharam or dash it to them...we will know.

There is no silver bullet in war. U use a combination of weapons. The guy is being clever by half. Before the Tucanos arrived had the military not been using the mi-35p ? Both aircraft have roles to play and both have advantages. The tucano has far superior ISR capabilities and can hit a target long before the target can see it or hear it. It also can stay airborne for a lot longer. However both aircraft are in use and will continue to be in use.

I doubt Babajide understands the aircraft he is making arguments about

Tucano has 14 miles firing range, the insurgents won't hear or see what hits them.

HELICOPTERS CAN BE EASILY SHOT DOWN BY RPGS.
THEY ALSO HAVE TO FLY VERY CLOSE TO THEIR TARGETS FOR EFFECTIVE DECIMATION.

JET FIGHTERS LIKE THE SUPER TUCANO CAN DELIVER SHORT AND LONG RANGE SHOTS EVEN BEFORE THE ENEMIES HEAR THEIR ENGINE SOUND....
Re: Nigerian Army To Use Mi-35p Helicopters Rather Than Tucano Jets by Gadafii: 11:56am On Nov 17, 2021
you bought vietnam war era tucanos and you are gloating

be like our military planners and advisers are not abreast of modern combact, counter terrorism etc

helicopeter gunships are better off than these tucanos, they are good at eliminating ground objectsm they deliver heavy fire power as well, because of the canons mounted on them

this is a russina built mi35 helicopter gunship below

in my opinion

NA should be equiped with more air components like these mi35s, they dont always have to wait for the airforce to bail them from bandists and boko harams

i doubt if the nigerian army have any air capabilities, i know its the job of the airforce, but if the army always rely on the airforce to help them smoke terrorists, what would happen when their is a confrontation with other countries, or their is am a=umwamted aircraft entering the airpsace of FRN, thats when i see the airforce scrambling jets to intercept then not chasing after bandits on bike.
