Deadly explosion: Over 1,000 shops shut in Ladipo spare parts market

Businesses were paralysed on the ever-busy Ojekunle Street in the popular Ladipo Market area of Lagos State on Tuesday as over 1,000 shops were shut down as a result of the deadly gas explosion that rocked a mechanic workshop on number 35 and 37 of the long lane.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that at least five persons were burnt to death when the explosion rocked a mechanic premises around 8am on Tuesday.

About 60 buildings including two-storey and one-storey structures wholly housing shops were closed for business activities due to the incident. Each of the building housed at least 40 shops.

Our correspondent who was at the scene of the explosion counted over 1,000 shops shut down on the long stretch road.

A trade union official also confirmed to The PUNCH that the over 1,000 members of the association didn’t open for the day’s business because of the explosion.

Security operatives and emergency responders have cordoned off the area as rescue operations and on-the-spot assessment continue.

Hundreds of traders were seen in front of their shops discussing in twos and threes as first responders evacuate burnt bodies of victims.

A trader and member who identified himself as Chukwuemeka Stephen said the traders shut down in solidarity.

“Nobody is talking business today when five persons died. Those who died can’t talk about business. We are closed today,” he said.

Another trader, Ifeanyi Ikenna, said he arrived around 9am just after the explosion.

Ikenna, whose shop was beside the explosion site, gave thanks to God for the ‘miracle’.

He said, “My being alive is by God. Nobody is talking business. People died tragically. And it is so sad. We are closed for today and maybe tomorrow.”

The chairman of the Mechanic Arm of the market, Sowemimo Babatunde, declined comments when our correspondent approached him on Tuesday.

Our correspondent observed that Babatunde and some other officials of the market went in for an emergency meeting as of press time.

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, while addressing newsmen at the scene, said, “Once the place is okay for human activities, the whole place would be opened. I cannot say one hour, two hours, three hours; it is for the experts to do that.”

The Ladipo Market, popularly known for spare parts and other vehicle accessories, also accommodates mechanics and other automobile technicians, amongst others.

The market is one of the largest spare parts hubs in Nigeria.

What a tragedy and that's why I always advocate for the training of staff in safety protocols around the work place at least even if it's only oga that has HSE, he can impart that knowledge on his boys before they start working properly with him. I don't know if it's human error that caused this explosion sha but it's most likely

This explosion was an oxygen gas explosion. Probably they were trying to transfer the gas from one cylinder to the other.I still do not know when end users will understand that transferring gas from cylinder to cylinder is very risky .

Oxygen gas is explosive not flammable,I wonder if our fire service has the capacity to handle such .

Secondly alot of those cylinders used in Nigeria are not well tested, basic safety precautions are flaunted.

We need to start adding more value to human life.

This country is so daft.
See technology everywhere.
We don't make use of technology.
Every gas station should have gas leakage alarm for immediate alert.
Now 5 lives wasted. Technology could have saved the situation.

.

Well
I sell mobile Phone and LAPTOP POWERBANK.

Nobody is talking business when people died....words of a regular citizen. But here in this country, leaders whose prime responsibility is to protect lives and properties would act as if it is normal for the people to lose their lives to bandits and terrorists. They lack empathy, they dont care, they place no value on the lives of nigerians. This is so sad.

I pray the Lord comforts the bereaved in this very difficult time.

Amen.

Anytime i pass by some of the retail gas shops filling cooking gas, I fear a very gruesome scene. majorly because of our carlessness and unwholesome disregard for safety and regulations or rules in general.
The safety practices of some of these shops would leave you wondering how a country like this can ever get to the promised land. Here, anything goes.....so sad.

RIP to the businesses. RIP to logic & reason!

Good morning, does that mean most of us that fill our gas in shops are actually risking our lives and that of the shop owner?
Because a larger percentage of Nigerians fill their gas in shops and it's usually from a bigger cylinder (owned by shop owners) to the customer's smaller cylinder.

Always attacking and destroying Igbo businesses in the name of explosion or inferno in Lagos but few ones owned by Yorubas are always spared. Afonja, God is seeing you all. I urge Igbos in Ladikpo, Alaba and other Igbo markets in Lagos to continue putting their trust in God who reigns above men.
