If u like give a billion reasons why africans are backward. But the whole thing can be summerized into two words- mental slavery.

Until africans are mentally emancipated and free from all colonial indoctrinations like christinity and islam, common bees will be better placed in animal kingdom than africans because they tend to understand their fundamental place in nature better than everyday africans.

It is sad but it is true.

so are you saying we should do away with religion. because that will be a herculean task. africans are so religious by nature
Re: Theories To Explain The Backward State Of Africa by Kobojunkie: 7:38am On May 08, 2012
Religion is here to stay. Even when the last African dies, religion will remain. So it is nonsensical to blame religion for the woes caused and perpetrated by Africans with small minds.

There are far more religious people in Arab, and much of the Asian world. However the same level of decay is not witnessed in many of those countries. So, I suggest we focus on tackling rather than deflecting from the real issues.

The kind of indoctrinated religion africans practice kills off reality and reasoning. It puts the minds of africans in a state of suspended animation, thereby, rendering it useless to instincts, creativity and rationality.

Same applies to the brainwashed education africans acquire, education without meaning. That is why the socalled educated ones are happy to blow their trumpets from oyinbo land, running away from problems they are supposedly educated to solve. Their education only seems to make sense when they are under oyinbo control not when they are on their own because they are totally devoid of initiatives, like educated zombies.

And all these boils down to losing the fundamental beats of life,of losing the track of the essence of being.

The slave trade is non of my business - and I don't care about it... I'm talking about the control, Brussels, and Washington exerts over the policies in Africa... Yes, our leaders are utterly corrupt - but they're stooges...

Africa as far as I'm concerned is still under indirect colonization... The coup in Mali, and Guinea Bissau should be enough to prove people like you wrong... When the Malian coup took place - everything after the coup was under the supervision of France... Decisions were taken in Paris!

The same for Guinea Bissau - Portugal acted as the surrogate dad..

you lack comprehension....slavery had every thing to do with the present. Who were the colonial masters of those two nations? Were there not slaves extacted from them? How else would they have influence from outsiders? Thats the problem. If you cannot admit to africa's failures you stand NO chance at elevation. Ppl "like me are informed". Know that brv.

Emancipation of Africa can only begin when our people decide to stick their necks out in the wild.

@ OP, I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned culture. I believe it’s the main reason for Africa’s backward state. Why, because, Culture can be a conservative influence, it can also stifle innovation, ultimately preventing change.

The culture of intimidation on Nairaland shows the mentality of the average African – if a view/idea/comment is different from yours, kill it by intimidating the person responsible. Example shown below:
Metalgoong:
Please go back to the romance section where your mates are playing.I don't engage your type in political discourse.
Moreover, if people aren’t allowed to air their views/feedback/suggestions, how can a Country develop, where is the improvement initiative?

As with Darwin’s law of natural selection, adaptation is key to survival. If Africa is to compete in the World, then it has to adapt by identifying and eliminating areas in its Cultures that stifle innovation, as well as to encourage and support it.

Even Seun upgraded Nairaland to adapt and survive in his on-line environment. How successful or innovative that has been, is yet to be seen. tongue

...the must authentic, valid & foundamental theory is Genesis 9:20–27 where Noah cursed his younger son (Ham).

"And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. And he said , Cursed be Canaan (Ham); a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. And he said , Blessed be the LORD God of Shem (present day Israel); and Canaan/Ham (Africa, part of Asia & Arab) shall be his servant. God shall enlarge Japheth (Europe, America), and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan/Ham shall be his servant.

..the phrase "..he (japheth) shall dwell in the tenths of shem" explains the strong colabo between Israel & America.

Ham settle in cush/ethopia and the history of all black people is traceable to Ethopia.

Note that Shem, Ham & Japheth are the ancestors of the present human race as the entire generation was destroy
by flood.

In addition to colonialism, exploitaion and corruption, i think one problem why African countries may never compete with their pairs in europe and America is because they don't have a unique product. Most of the things we involve ourselves in as African countries are things that were created by the whites for the whites, so you can't beat them at their own game. The best think is to look inward like China did and the the sky will be your limited there will be no limit.

culture and other factors are responsible for the backward state of Africa.
But,i do have one and this is Africans are not willing to change. They are unnecessarily stubborn.I give you a simple example whenever fellow Africans dump garbage just anywhere even though there are garbage bin close i try asking them why?Their response is usually very shocking..the funny thing they will even shout at me.Now,"he who is faithful in little things .....",is what?If Africans cannot do simple ,little stuff, how do you expect them to do bigger stuffs?

Beautiful contributions from Beaf, Shymex, Kobojunkie, MsDarkskin and the rest

However, it appears all the factors we have highlighted are mere epiphenomena of a yet to be identified cause. For example, most continents experienced slave trade and even profited from from selling their own for whatever material gains. Why has Africa reacted more negatively with these massive traits of backwardness than other races who also had similar experiences?

Also, if slave trade, colonization and/or connivance of the ruling classes are the fundamental issues, on what pivot do these factors rest? If we had "developed" significantly prior to the arrival of colonialists, if we had had sufficient or superior cerebral prowess; which would, among other things, have translated into the ability to defend ourselves against invaders, would we ever have been colonized? Studies seem to suggest that life started in Africa, why didn't these early Africans venture out like the Westerners did centuries later? Why didn't it ever cross anybody's mind then to see what was on the other side of the river? If it did, why didn't they have the technology to travel? So what made it so easy for us to surrender our sovereignty a such early dawn of time?

Some have advanced "default culture" as a possible reason. To start with, humans are not born with any culture, culture is a product of the interaction between innate cognitive processes and the environment as the individual seeks to make sense of the world. Therefore, culture, greed, selfishness, lack of self esteem, all character traits etc and even religion are all external manifestations of something congenital to a race.

So, when we trace all these factors long enough, we must arrive at a point, the end, an origin,an individual, the first individual, and the first black person, who embodied the race in terms of everything innate.

It is when I arrive at this end that I find myself at a beginning that i do not understand

@OP
We need to keep asking ourselves these kind of questions really, because in asking we learn.
You are really right on the cultural impediments.
First on that cultural aspect is the reason why we are about the only race that did not have literacy before it's contact with the other race. 'Knowledge is power' is not just a cliche!

Centuries of history has shown that education is one exercise that has the ability to open the minds to explore and invent, to change and to evolve a whole society dynamically to a better form.
Take for example, the 3 basic foundations of science education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Africans either learn them in English, French, Portuguese or whatever any other foreign language that we learned, while all the other races do these studies in their native languages, helping them to use it to affect their immediate societies as they can easily relate what they are studying to their environment, our own barely one century of education has shown that we only read to pass exams, then forget all we ever read!
Please don't tell me Egypt had schools in the centuries B.C. because they are not racially Africans but Arabians.

The Arabs had their alphabets, numerals, historic and poetic writings and religious books well documented, the Europeans also have theirs, ours was only based on experiential practices, and the oral tradition of handing over histories, which only the elders have knowledge of, and if they die before sharing it with others, that knowledge ceases to exist!
Is it now surprising that we are being intimidated into changing our personal names and cities to suit either European or Arabic pronunciations.

The second, and the most debilitating is Slavery/Colonialism (i am not trying to play the blame game here.)I am aware that most nations had also suffered these evils in the past but what made ours(Africa) most unfortunate is that it coincided with the age of industrialization.

No nation had prior to then, needed to depend on the other for resources the way that industrialization threw open the world's quest for Energy and refined goods.
The world Empires of old mostly collect taxes from the colonies, while they worked their lands themselves as the rightful owners.

Enter the age of industrialization, the colonial masters knew that for the wheel of industries to continually turn, there must be a conveyor belt that must supply raw materials, and since they are already having them cheap from their African colonies, why change the status quo? They sat down and shared Africa like one big chocolate cake.
Another term had to come in, Neo-colonization! The 'rants' of anti-slavery became deafening, and to sound morally responsible to their citizens, the powers that be withdrew their administrators and planted African stooges to overlook their interests, that is where we still are till today.
Our leaders ever since independence are only willing to loot our resources and send to their masters, while taking their cut.

Amaka G29: Economic exploitation
Political unrest
Violence towards women
Poor national infrastructures
Lack of quality, accessible education for all
Lack of quality, accessible health care for all
Stunted technological advancement
Extreme instances of poverty and disease

Certainly different countries are experiencing different rates of growth and improvement in some areas over others, but these are the things I've noticed

I would never use the term "backward," because the "West" damn sure ain't forward...I would say that the continent is in a state of economic, political, and social warfare where most of the violence is experience by the poor.

now how could u conclude ur comment in this manner amaka? If i may ask, what exactly do u call "forwardness" and "backwardness". If u honestly think the gun-shaped continent is not backward then i dare u to find a more fitting phrase for it.

Well!we av 2 know dat d abolilition of slave trade was as a result of d industrial revolution in Great Britain wich later spreat 2 oda parts of Europe n America, dat is to say, human labour had bin largely taken over by machines wich also brought abt technology 2day. However, after d abolition of slave trade,Europe later had issues wth supply, demand n source of raw materials. Supply of finished goods quadruppled demand. So dey started lukin 4 market place wich Africa became deir market place n source of raw materials till 2day. In summary, wthout production dere will be no development n production in Africa means bad market 4 Europe,America n Asia. Imagine Nigeria wth steady power supply, ajaokuta steal in 100% operation, car manufacturing factories not assembling o n gud road network. Dis where neo-colonialism is in play. God help nigeria n d cotinent of Africa.

Quite a lot of posters here have covered, what I think, are the main reasons for our current state of comatose. It is impossible to erase centuries of slave trade, colonisation and forcing together diverse groups for divide and conquer tactics for economic exploitation in a lifetime. Many of our current leaders come from that environment, born pre-1960 and have continued to perpetuate this "culture" of economic slave trade, colonisation and divide and conquer because it is what they understand. I also believe that religion is tool used by our leaders to enforce this division. So to that extent we as a country are also culpable. I see that many people are have put Ghana as an example of progress. But are they really that ahead of Nigeria. I think not. Jerry Rawlings might have taken, quite drastic steps to say the least, to mitigate against the effects colonisation but this has not stopped an over-reliance on all things foreign and UN aid - so there are not a very good an example really because they still suffer that inferiority complex brought about by centuries of colonisation.

We have many so problems caused by the forcing together people with such diverse philosophy that it will take some doing to overcome the effects of divide and conquer and foster trust between the groups. That is the first thing we as a Nation need to deal with. As a nation we need something, a cause, to unite the ethnic groups then we will have a chance to solve our other problems.

OzReal:
3. The effects of colonialism still reverberates in Nigeria, and all around Africa. As much as I believe that we are our own greatest enemies and cause of most of our problems, the 'invisible' hands of the colonial masters cannot be dismissed lightly. We all know the saying that: "He who pays the piper, call the tune"; in the case of Africa, this is very true. We already know that our continent possesses vast resources and all, but we also know that we are in a very weak position against the West and if I might add, China. This weak position has put us in a situation whereby we cannot easily dismiss or go against their(powers that be) vested or potential interests in the continent, otherwise the results of doing so could be more devastating than they already are.

These are some of the reasons I believe that Africa is in a backward state.

I have to disagree disagree with u here as u are missing the point entirely. Don't u understand that is this deficient culture that kept us in such a state that, when the white man came, we were practically defenseless? Didn't we appear on this earth before them? So how come they were so ahead of us when they came that they took us so easily and cheaply? Or are u trying to say that they are naturally more intelligent than us?

Most of the responsible commentators have basically touched on the fundamental issue responsible for the current and seemingly perpetual backwardness of Africa. For the sake of emphasy, prior to the scramble and resultant colonization of Africa, the black man have always wanted to remain the way he was. The typical African man is afraid of change, exploration, and quest. Take for example the area of medicine. Africa only discovered the roots and herbs in their immediate environment but could not go further than that. Today, on the other hand, as a result of education, the white man is able to prepare such roots and herbs and convert it to more convenient substance for consumption. Someone stated that all other continents already had education before their colonialists came. You can imagine the shock that greeted the Europeans as they entered into a completely unexposed and uneducated black world.
The psyche of the black after the colonial era has not not even helped the issue any bit. Neo-colonial slavery has taken over. The African man, somewhat naturally, considers "himself" inferior to the white man. The African man sees his home as not "home enough" and that is why there is a continuous push for Europeby young people in Africa.

Interesting comments from those who have posted.
What I believe is responsible for our problems is the attitude to not ask questions. We are so docile, accept everything we are told and would not bother questioning details. This is not an attitude that engenders progression.
If only Africans will ask more questions that they already do, our present state will change for good

very, very wrong analysis there. You have no evidence for your claim. The scramble for Africa did cause something significant to happen and probably did upset the continent's balance. However, it's no excuse for retrogression, much the same way the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has never been an excuse among the Japanese.
From where did you learn that Africans only "discovered the roots and herbs in their immediate environment"? That's very questionable assertion.
Africans did research medicine and made efforts to improve on individual health. No wonder a lot of Africans lived into the old age then, much more than do these days.
At the time Africans were using so-called roots and herbs, Europeans were farther off from modern medicine as it is today. By the time, Europe got into the development of modern health, Africans were struggling with liberating themselves from the chains of colonialism. It was a liberation which demanded the whole will power of the nation, and it's hard to believe any other activities could have been equally well-executed!
Re: Theories To Explain The Backward State Of Africa by Nobody: 4:25pm On May 08, 2012
The first reason I'm gonna give is climate.. Yes differences in climate could be the reason why africa is backward. Is it a coincidence that most of the most developed and innovative countries are temperate regions of the earth?

My reason for giving this reason is because temperate regions produce less social activtives that could hinder innovation. Eg, the long winter periods europeans experience every year makes them stay indoors, which in turn makes them innovative, because with serenity, quietness and tranquillity comes invention and creativity.

Whereas, in the tropics (of which africa is situated), there are noisy and sometimes chaotic activities, which most often have less time for ourselves to think and get creative..warmth as we all know encourage such actitivies.

My second reason for giving climate are diseases..it is a fact that there are more tropical diseases than temperate diseases. If malaria no kill u for africa, other tropical insects go kill u.. These diseases place our creativity @ disadvantage, because time spent in doing other creative things, our system, brain and selves use it to fight tropical diseases.

Finally, let's look at rate of decay in these two regions. A caveman in stone age that has jus hunt a deer is better off than an african in that same period.. The caveman need not worry about rot, nature serves as Freezer for him.. This enables him to do other productive things with his time, instead of worrying about his meal or going regularly to hunt like his african counterpart.

In summary, time you save, you use it to invent, get creative and you then pass these skills to your next generation.
Africans have never been socially backward compared to their european counterparts, the only place we lagging behind are in science, advanced medicine and technology. Socially, they not any better, remember they fought two senseless wars that almost killed 150 million people, yet there are places in africa that has been peaceful for 500 years.

To butress OP's point, our culture is the reason for our backwardness, and our culture is a product of our climate.

Hahaha, you won't wanna do egungun festival in minus 30 degree centigrade..

Imagine if our ancestors got creative indoors instead of those time-wasting rituals and festivals? Maybe we would have been the 1s to go colonise europe..

So if we are to leave this 'backwardness', all them cultural, spiritual and social norms we observe, we have to put an end to it because it won't take us anywhere...

Africa can sometimes be too chaotic to be creative.
