Ibom City Ferries to commence daily scheduled Ferry service fron Oron to Calabar Operations in December.

Further to it's commitment to help promote water transportation in the state as an effective, fast and safe alternative to road transportation, Ibom City Ferries announced in Uyo that it will commence it's ferry operations from Oron to Calabar from December 1st, 2021.

The company will be deploying 100 pieces of a 50 seater passenger ferry, complete with modern facilities, i.e. Wifi, Air Condition, phone charging ports, Toilet and drinks Bar,

The MD of Ibom City Ferries, Mr Larinde Williams stated that the service is expected to change the landscape of travel in the state.

*NSE-Uyo Embark on Technical Visit to Ekpene Ukpa Bridge Construction Site Amidst Safety Concerns*


The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Uyo Branch on Wednesday embarked on an on-the-spot assessment of Ekpene Ukpa bridge, currently being constructed by WE Construction Engineering Limited and financed by the Akwa Ibom State Government.


The Professional body said the visit to the project site was sequel to concerns expressed by citizens of the state over the viability and safety of the project when completed and subjected to use by the public.


Recall that a massive tower recently emanated from the bridge without a feasible foundation, leading to members of the public demanding that Engineers and other experts in the field undertake an on the spot assessment to ascertain if the structure was safe and also in line with the initial design of the project.


Leading a team of engineers to the project site, the Branch Chairman, Engr. Ukeme Okpob, asked the project engineer, to explain the essence of the tower on the bridge and its load demand, maintaining that the structure should be supported by a foundation beneath the bridge to guarantee its stability.


Responding, the project manager, Mr. Eric Zou told the team of engineers that the Ekpene Ukpa bridge is not a cable bridge, hence the need for a beam to hold the structure from beneath not feasible foundation. He explained that the tower raised and the cables linked to the tower were merely for aesthetic reasons.


The Chairman of the NSE-Uyo Branch, while commending the project team for the explanation observed non appointment of a consultant during the design stage of the project and called on the Government to always appoint independent consultants from the design stage of projects to ensure proper supervision and quality delivery of projects.



The team of Engineers to the project site comprised of a former Vice President of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and Structural Engineering consultant, Professor Charles Uko; Engr Dr. Essien Udo of University of Uyo and a host of others.


They expressed satisfaction at the detailed explanation given by the company in charge of the project, which they said has doused suspicion and will address the controversy generated as a result of the towering structure erected on the bridge recently.


The experts warned the company handling the project, WE Construction Engineering Limited, to ensure the workability of the project based on explanations they offered during the technical visit.



The Nigerian Society of Engineers is a professional body saddled with the responsibility of checkmating to ensure codes and standards that regulate the practice of the Engineering Profession in Nigeria are adhered to strictly.
