Looking back now, I think things would have taken a different dimension if the original coupist of 15tb January, 1966 had formed the government instead of the reactionary government of Ironsi. Nzeogwu, Ifeajuna, Ademoyega etc were better educated and prepared for government. Maybe we would have avoided the bloody counter coup and the bloodier civil war that we are yet to recover from.

gen ogundipe alone was the only one who sent Soldiers to Confront the July 1966 Coup plotters twice

In the First atttempt the Military Cooks,Clerks and Technicians that ogundipe had quickly assembled were Ambushed near the Airport and 30 of them were Killed also killed were 2 European Citizens

At the 2nd attempt gen ogundipe sent gowon to engage with the Coup plotters and get them to surrender but gowon was Captured as a hostage by them and after 2 days they made him their new Leader and head of State


All the Eastern Officers who were battalion Commanders with Troops and Artillery had fled for their lives to the East and Completely abandoned gen ogundipe

So with what exactly did they expect ogundipe to fight with since Ironsi their kinsman had diligently made sure that ogundipe had no fighting Infantry Troop formations under him that he could Command since almost all the Battalions were Commanded by Easterners for reasons best known to Ironsi

The remaining 2 battalions were Commanded by Northerners of which the Commander at Ibadan was a big part of the Coup and Shuwa in far away Kano was already dealing with the Mutiny in Kano

They can't even make documentary or movies on this highly important part of our history all they do is shouting evil forest up and down. Majority of Nigerians have no idea what happened in the 60s

It is always a welcome idea for dingbats to make fool of themselves in public. I would love the poster of the above crap to list the 13 military formations in Nigeria and the 11 units commanded by Igbo officers after the July 29, 1966 countercoup. Any soldier who was not involved in a coup has very little chance of survival as next target could be him/her. There was no Igbo commander of unit who was left untargeted by the mutineers of July 29, 1966.

I have tried to look for articles online majority of them are highly tainted and slanted towards the tribe of the writer. A documentary or movie involving actors from different regions will be far more balanced than a book written by one man who would most likely be biased especially in a country like Nigeria

Nwokedi, 2nd Lt. J.C. Ojukwu, 2nd Lt. Ngwuluka, 2nd Lt. Ejiofor, 2nd Lt. Egbikor, 2nd Lt. Igweze, 2nd Lt. Onyefuru, 2nd Lt. Nwokocha, 2nd Lt. Azubuogu and 2nd Lt. Nweke in which they drew FIRST blood and openly slaughtered and butchered leading politicians and army officers from EVERY single zone in the country except their own.

I should also mention that even though this was clearly an Igbo coup there was one Yoruba officer who was amongst the ringleaders by the name of Major Adewale Ademoyega. It was a very bloody night indeed. Amongst those killed were the Prime Minister, Sir Tafawa Balewa, the Premier of the Western Region, Chief S.L. Akintola, the Premier of the Northern Region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Federal Minister of Finance, Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, Brigadier Zakari Maimalari, Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun, Colonel Ralph Shodeinde, Lt . Colonel James Yakubu Pam, Lt. Colonel Abogo Largema and numerous others.

They did not just kill these revered and respected leaders but in some cases they mocked, tortured and maimed them before doing so, took pictures of their dead and mutilated bodies and killed their wives and children as well. For weeks after these horrific acts were carried out, the Igbo people rejoiced and celebrated them in the streets and markets of the north, openly displaying pictures and posters of the Saurdana’s mutilated body with Nzeogwu’s boot on his neck, loudly playing a famous and deeply offensive anti-northern song in which northerners were compared to goats and listening to it on their radios, jubilating that they had brought an end to what they described as ”northern rule and Islamic domination” and openly boasting that they themselves would now ”rule Nigeria forever”. Though the first coup failed the matter did not end there.

As much as I hate to sound tribal here, this write up and the bolded explicitly shows that there is not much difference between Igbos and Hausas/Fulani, preferential treatment and nepotism will always backfire sooner or later, Ironsi didn't see the BIG PICTURE in his choice of placements, and it backfired on him.

If Gen Ironsi had not allowed Tribalism to Cloud his Judgement Gen Ogundipe would have had the Infantry Troops and firepower to put down the Northern Coup

Because of this thread, I had to do my research to know who started the tainting and tribal mockery in a coup, had it been they simply took over without insults and degradation or a particular tribe, there wouldn't have been a counter attack same way, and the civil war would never have happened.

I understand your bigoted angle but we don’t have to see everything as ethnic war. Ogundipe was not a part of the successful July counter coup and couldn’t have taken over. He sent Gowon to Ikeja immediately after the coup to negotiate with the mutineers led by Murtala but Gowon became a turncoat on the way and negotiated power for himself. So, what do you expect him to do? Fight when there is no single soldier who is ready to fight for him? Ojukwu was in Enugu telling him on phone to take over without sending a single soldier to fight for him. Is that how to take over? You think taking over government is a joke, right?

You're really expecting much from that Igbo clown if you think he understands how a coup works. He probably thinks after a coup the plotters will look around for the most senior officer outside their ring to hand over to.
