Danjuma arrested Aguiyi-Ironsi and questioned him about his alleged complicity in the coup, which saw the demise of the Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello. The circumstances leading to Aguiyi-Ironsi death still remain a subject of much controversy in Nigeria. His body and that of Fajuyi were later discovered in a nearby forest.
could he had been complicit when he actually quashed the coup from lagos

Grow from this parochial sentiment and blind view of things. You obviously lack true historical knowledge of events of 1966 coups. Ironsi was a colossal failure in terms of leadership and don't even know the ABC of running a complex country like Nigeria.

Mind you, iam Igbo too

Redcrafton:

Better than Gen Ogundipe that was "utterly competent"...but the coward ran away to London when he should have taken over...He ran off leaving it to a 29 year old Gowon.

"....Following the coup, he returned to Nigeria, to serve as the Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters Nigerian Defence Forces (de facto Vice President) between January 1966 and August 1966. After the bloody coup which overthrew Aguiyi-Ironsi, he left the country for the United Kingdom.[6] He was criticized in some quarters for his refusal to seize the mantle of office of his supreme commander, who had been murdered in the August 1966 coup, and that this aggravated the pogroms that eventually followed. He was the most senior military officer after the death of Aguiyi-Ironsi, and the thinking was that he ought to have taken power himself..." Wiki...

Thanks you so much for your detailed enlightenment. Everything shouldn't be viewed through ethnic prism.

seunmsg:

Ogundipe was also a conservative soldier like Ironsi. I don’t think he would have performed any different from Ironsi if he had taken over.

I understand your bigoted angle but we don’t have to see everything as ethnic war. Ogundipe was not a part of the successful July counter coup and couldn’t have taken over. He sent Gowon to Ikeja immediately after the coup to negotiate with the mutineers led by Murtala but Gowon became a turncoat on the way and negotiated power for himself. So, what do you expect him to do? Fight when there is no single soldier who is ready to fight for him? Ojukwu was in Enugu telling him on phone to take over without sending a single soldier to fight for him. Is that how to take over? You think taking over government is a joke, right?

There were 13 Military formations of Which 11 were headed by Easterners many of them Sandhurst Trained Officers almost all who fled to the East instead of making any attempt to rescue the Kidnapped head of State General Ironsi and his host Col Fajuyi
The one at Abeokuta was Killed and his death was the Trigger for the Northern Counter Coup

gen ogundipe alone was the only one who sent Soldiers to Confront the July 1966 Coup plotters twice

In the First atttempt the Military Cooks,Clerks and Technicians that ogundipe had quickly assembled were Ambushed near the Airport and 30 of them were Killed also killed were 2 European Citizens

At the 2nd attempt gen ogundipe sent gowon to engage with the Coup plotters and get them to surrender but gowon was Captured as a hostage by them and after 2 days they made him their new Leader and head of State

All the Eastern Officers who were battalion Commanders with Troops and Artillery had fled for their lives to the East and Completely abandoned gen ogundipe

So with what exactly did they expect ogundipe to fight with since Ironsi their kinsman had diligently made sure that ogundipe had no fighting Infantry Troop formations under him that he could Command since almost all the Battalions were Commanded by Easterners for reasons best known to Ironsi

The remaining 2 battalions were Commanded by Northerners of which the Commander at Ibadan was a big part of the Coup and Shuwa in far away Kano was already dealing with the Mutiny in Kano

Eastern officers and men that have already been decimated in the barracks by their northern counterparts in their sleep.. The few who were lucky to miraculously make it to the east had to organise 'waking ceremonies' after their people had earlier organised funeral ceremonies to mourn their 'demise' .

Soldiering is never for the weak hearts.. things began deteriorating when brig ogundipe abdicated his duty. Thats fair weather soldiering. You are a soldier and enjoying all the benefits, respect and honor that comes with it. But when its time to take responsibility and initiative,u suddenly remembered it is a risky job.No excuses for that!

All that is in the distant...ancient past now,but no use distorting facts just to feel good.. Cowardice in the army can lead to death of many.. it did in this case.. over 4m civillian lives

Looking back now, I think things would have taken a different dimension if the original coupist of 15tb January, 1966 had formed the government instead of the reactionary government of Ironsi. Nzeogwu, Ifeajuna, Ademoyega etc were better educated and prepared for government. Maybe we would have avoided the bloody counter coup and the bloodier civil war that we are yet to recover from.
I can’t but agree with you! ‘The crocodile’ was not cut out for politics. He should have transferred his power to a better trusted ally. We would have been saved from civil war, and even Biafra agitations.

I am not here to paint Ogundipe with a brush of competence, at least not politically. I have said it earlier that he was a conservative soldier like Ironsi and wouldn’t have fared any better if he was made head of state.

As 2-1c to Gowon, Ogundipe was more interested in allocation of quarters to soldiers at the barracks than administering the burning country. He was also not prepared for politics. That’s is why I said things might have turned out differently for the country if the original plotters of 15th January, 1966 had taken over the government instead of the grossly incompetent government of Ironsi and Ogundipe. Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu, Ademoyega and the other majors were by far more educated and politically prepared for governance than old soldiers like Ironsi and Ogundipe. If you still want to keep playing the ethnic card after this, enjoy yourself.

Ogundipe according to Gen Welby Everade the last British Head of Army was the most Competent Officer in the Nigerian Army that was why Gen Ironsi refused to put him in Charge of any Infantry Troop formations

He Could have Checkmated any Sinister plan If he had troops under him

Ironsi wanted Ogundipe to be a toothless bulldog and that backfired during the Northern Coup because Ogundipe had no Infantry Troops to Counter the Coup with

To make matters Worse all the Surviving Easterneners who were infantry Commanders had all fled to the East

It was only in 2 unavoidable circumstances that Ironsi allowed non Easterners to be in Charge of any Military formations with Troops
Col Akahan at Ibadan because the Northern Troops there rejected any Southerners after their last 2 Northern GOCs Maimailari and Largema were Murdered in the Coup and Far away Kano

Ogundipe had Joined the Army as a 17 year Old during the 2 nd World War and had fought in Burma against the Japanese

Ogundipe knew Perfectly well those who were behind the January Coup that had Murdered the furious Northern Soldiers leaders he also knew Perfectly well why Ironsi didn't want him in Charge of any Infantry Troops
