It was a price too little to pay for how brilliant Emmanuel Dennis had been for 90 minutes and more. He was booked for celebrating excessively but who wouldn’t? Not after an excellent performance that culminated when he burst past Diogo Dalot a minute before and fired past David De Gea to earn Watford a deserved 4–1 win.
The ball had just hit the net when Dennis took off his shirt in front of a sorry De Gea. Sprinting towards the corner flag, he flung his black GPS tracking vest before sliding on his knees across the turf. Josh King, whose goal he had assisted met him and held his face with both hands. Still shirtless, Dennis performed briefly in front of the home fans. Minutes later, his coach Claudio Ranieri, with both arms spread was moving towards him, he was doing the same too and they locked in an embrace. Many Nigerians had begun to fear the worst, and validly too. Osimhen had almost single-handedly helped Nigeria qualify for the World Cup playoffs, scoring four goals out of nine. Not just the goals, but he appeared the most passionate Nigerian player in those matches.
On Tuesday, Napoli announced again that the surgery was successful but he would be out for at least three months. Aha! Every fear had now been confirmed. Osimhen is effectively out of the Nations Cup. What happens to the country’s hopes of winning a fourth title?
There are Nigerian forwards in outstanding form at this moment but none has proven to be close in quality to Osimhen. Not many have been tried, to be fair. Even then, there is the country’s peculiar problem of a lack of inventive midfielders- with the ability to create chances. And yet, if there is any player with a style similar to Osimhen’s, it’s Dennis.


Dennis had admitted to being able to play “anywhere in a front three” and he has continuously shown that- at Club Brugge and Watford- especially this season. At times, he has switched positions with teammates, Ismaila Sarr and Josh King. It’s not just the goals that stand Osimhen out, but the work rate- the willingness to chase lost causes tenaciously and grapple for crumbs. This is a quality Dennis shares richly with Osimhen.
While his late goal against Manchester United last Saturday from a hopeful Foster goal kick proved just that, Dennis has recorded an average of 22.68 pressures this season, reminding you of a certain Roberto Firmino. The 24-year-old gives plenty in defence and his tackle rate of 2 per 90 minutes is also a testament. Dennis also wins a very good percentage of his aerial duels, winning at least 2.26 per 90 minutes- more than Osimhen’s 1.67. Dennis has shown to be able to link perfectly with teammates. On his Watford debut, he struck a fine partnership with Sarr. “I know the combination (with Sarr) will be very important for me if I am going to be the № 9 for the team, so I am really happy with the combination,” Dennis said. And against Manchester United, he combined effectively with King.


Dennis adds an extra quality of being able to go past players in tight spaces. He can go past players on the inside and on the outside. So far, this season, he has completed 2.07 dribbles per 90 in the Premier League. And while Osimhen edges him out considerably in shooting and accuracy, Dennis’ ability to comfortably retain possession, bring teammates into the play and create chances makes him a competent deputy.
The modern Nigerian forward has to be able to adapt. There are no meals to be served on a platter. And that, probably, makes Dennis special and important to the Super Eagles, now more than ever. Dennis can play football and Dennis can score.

Nacho has the 'touch' players like Salah, Messi, Ronaldinho etc have. The problem was that he became lazy. Refused to develop his fitness, work rate, pace, etc.

Osimhen is as gifted as Nacho, but in a different way. You don't have to have the touch to be gifted. Ronaldo doesn't have it, yet he is a GOAT.

One thing though I have noticed with Osimhen is that his ball control, especially with aerial balls, is special. Guy can trap any ball, no matter how high. However, his first touch is surprisingly poor, which is weird with someone with excellent ball control. Also, his crosses are pinpoint accurate, but his short passing is also poor. That is usually the difference between kids who have been playing from academies at 9 years and guys like Osimhen who grew up with street ball. Some of the simpler things like short passes and first touch are missing in Osimhen's portfolio because they weren't drilled into him when he was very young. However, he is better at the more natural things that only talent can help you with like ball control and crossing.

100% correct I've alluded to this observation but with almost the obligatory dogs abuse and claim s you hate Nigerian players birthed from local football.

What is we lack in technical ability we use natural attributes of to overcome, it works but not all the time.
