This isn't a new occurrence, I don't know why people are hyping it this year..
VERY normal
Didn't expect this comment to blow up, but yes this is normal.
Decades of legal and illegal oil exploration and zero care for the environment what else is post to happen?

I'm from Rivers state so, I'm pretty much aware of the angles

You set fire in the middle of your house and everywhere ends up In flames isn't that normal?
It's normal, expected, unsurprising.

You're correct, lady. I'm surprised the way people make it seem it just started this year. There was a time if you use a while handkerchief to clean your face in some areas of PH, na black stain you go see. Try mopping your tiled floor, same thing

In all sha, something has to be done about it, and urgently

Its sad that the more resourceful a state is in Nigeria, the less the government care about them

You imagine the amount of heavy metal on the foods that grow in that godforsaken land. It's a highly toxic and carcinogenic atmosphere, and that is why the life expectancy there is below fifty years or thereabout.

You're just ignorant...what has soot generated by incomplete combustion of organic compound got to do with heavy metal and carcinogens which stem from prolonged exposure to asbestos..your deluded and warped knowledge of chemistry goes to show how bereft you are.

And to think you described a land far better than whatever shithole you were hatched, godforsaken, beats my imagination.

I thought they said there are no more maners from heaven??

Add some cubes of sugar in that water and boom your black tea is ready..

But on a serious note what's the cause of this and what's the remedy??

This isn't looking good at all, imagine if the water can be contaminated like this how the air will be...

God help them.

If you go school, you should know the long term symptoms of environmental pollution caused by gas flaring.

That's it.
Quite simple. Residents should do medical screening for cancer etc.

The solution is to stop the drill

LibertyRep:
What other evidence is there to show how degraded the environment is?

If the water could be this dirty, what else are going to say about the air they breathe.

Sadly, some people are feeding fat on this discharge that will likely cause lung related issues for the residents in years to come.

Methinks Port Harcourt residents should be gifted packs of nose masks and be availed medical check-ups while the perpetrators are compelled to pay compensation.

Illegal refining of crude oil. People's organs are in danger by inhaling the black soot

Stop insisting, when you are wrong. Just apologize for the wrong choice of word, correct it and move on. It wont kill you.
It is not normal! It may be 'expected' based on irresponsible oil exploration, but it is certainly NOT normal.

Goodyness:
Gas flaring is the main culprit. Unfortunately, our government does not care about the well-being and wellness of her citizens.
This used to happen in remote ijaw villages and creeks some years ago. Sadly successive Governments have set deadlines upon deadlines to achieve zero flaring but all Na audio. Politicians have reduced Nigeria to joke of a country with so many laws that cannot be enforced due to weak institutions. It’s always self interest above National interest, they are only interested in political offices because of what they will gain and not what they will give.

For online trolls and supporters of evil and wickedness, before you come online to say rubbish you need to go and pass a night in any of these communities to understand their suffering. Politicians are wicked but their enablers are the most wicked and evil.

Bro Gas flaring is not the cause. complete combustion of gas doesn't leave soot. what gas does is to increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. The soot is arising from incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons and the chief culprit is the kpo fire or illegal refineries operating in the area.

No wonder you reason this way

Bro that comment from you is not cool at all. She is entitled to her opinions you don't need to make that condescending statement to her.
