I remember what happened when they tried to implement this policy c1999.

Two things that Governor Tinubu talked about as soon as he took office were (1) the return of mission schools to their owners and (2) the MOT programme.

Lagos had for long been known for its rickety danfo and molue buses. The government made it mandatory for all public buses to undergo the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) test. Vehicles that were not road worthy would not be allowed on the road. He had reached out to the auto assembly plants in Nigeria (PAN, VON, etc.) and major car companies to assist public bus owners to repair their vehicles at a discount.

Then the police and the newly formed LASTMA started impounding the buses and that's when the NURTW decided to show its power.

I went out to see things for myself and you won't believe what I saw. NURTW went on strike. There were massive crowds at bus stops as people who went out earlier in the day could not go back home because of lack of buses. Danfo buses were arriving at bus stops just to mock passengers. The conductors would call destinations and people would rush towards the buses, but they would speed off as soon as the crowd got near. Bus conductors were telling people to go and call Tinubu to come and carry them. I also saw a long convoy of danfo buses on Ikorodu Road and I learnt that they were on their way to Alausa. Okada riders made a killing on that day. Lagosians blamed the "wicked new governor" for their problems. People were calling in to radio shows to berate the government.

Then on the third or fourth day the government capitulated. The NURTW had won.

It'd be very interesting to see how they'll implement it this time.
I remember too but not vividly because i am not a lagosian.
Do you think this policy would work this time around?
What is the fate of vehicles from other states plying lagos roads?

Vehicle inspection is not a monopoly to Lagos State govt.

It can be issued In any state across Nigeria.

The end.

This rule has been operating in saner countries since Adam. Thanks Dr Commissioner for Transportation.

The articulated lorries, container lorries, tankers, and other heavy goods vehicles must be focused on for a start.
Every year, they must come to the appointed and trusted mechanic workshops for review of roadworthiness for their vehicles.

But this is supposed to be a nationwide rule.

Nice one, they should check level of carbon emission especially for trucks

People wonder why I like Lagos Administrators past and present, from Tinubu ,Fashola ,Ambode to Sanwo-Olu... It's because they are never afraid to cause trouble if it is what Lagos needs to grow

.
For private car owners. If government means business, they shouid start with commercial vehicles. They shouid leave private car owners alone.

It's for all cars , as road Worthiness is part of vehicle papers annual renewal

This policy would be implemented for private vehicles only. Don't be surprised. Government likes looking at wrong direction to solve problems.

In other countries, long long jail time - that’s what any mechanic who passed a vehicle which should not have been passed to be worthy to use public roads gets.

I know.
They wouldn't try to implement it for commercial vehicles. Private vehicles are targets and motive is extortion.
Ideally, vios are not supposed to be checking vehicle papers. It is job of mtd of npf. If vios are on roads, they are there to spot rickety vehicles and stop their drivers for inspection.

I remember vividly as well. NURTW will still win in this case.

That MOT test issue was one of 3 battles that the Tinubu Administration had with the NURTW before realising that they could not defeat them.

The first battle was the MOT battle.

The second battle was the agbero battle (when the government ordered union officials to leave the bus stops and to stop collecting union dues there.

The third battle was the City Bus experiment (when the government tried to replace danfo buses with City Buses in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki).

The government lost all 3 battles and that's when it realised that it had to work with the NURTW because it couldn't defeat them.

Nice insight. It is only fools that can not remember where they are coming from. And neither will they understand where they are heading to.

Most Nigerians Don't like to do the right thing.
It's for our safety and benefit if done the right way, but alot will still try and cut corners concerning this.
I still admire Lagos no nonsense way of dealing with offenders even though sometimes high handed.
Let's see how it will be implemented.
There is no food and security for most Nigerians and so they will save as much money as required just for food and security.
-
Americans have cheap food and security. So they have time to consider and obey laws.
There's a difference.
