Have you ever regretted buying a tokunbo or Nigerian used car without proper inspection mainly because: 1)You went to purchase the car without a professional mechanic or because
(2) your mechanic was bribed and was not honest to you.

Nigerian used Nissan. Had an overheating issue at bolade oshodi, change hose and some other stuffs was driving down from alakuko. Then KAI and lastman never dey hungry like now, they assisted me in pushing off the road. After fixing took off again and engine knocked on third mainland bridge as in all the works with the car puffing smoke towed it 5k to my house.

I learned some technicalities with the vehicle later on but still regret not buying the golf 3 cabriolet which was cheaper by 30k

My own experience is that I wanted to buy the car without proper inspection of my pocket.

When I heard the price, I now inspected my life and decided to remain humble and Trek as a true follower of Christ.

I left school and saved about 250k, i decide borrow another 100k to enter labour market quick and start driving keke cos job no deh and i wasnt ready to feel frustrated about the govt.

Na so i buy second hand keke from this man, since i dont know much about it, he sold me a faulty keke, i spend more money trying to get the keke in shape but i couldnt, las las, i had to beg this same man to buy back his keke, he told me he can only buy the keke for 110k, i had no option than to sell the keke back to him for such price, i used the other 10k, travelled to the village to start afresh, Depression wan kill me, i decide to watch motivational videos to help my situation then i finally decide to learn barbing so i could save some money and move back to the city to hustle.

A member gave me a car as seed, the first day I took the car out, it fell break, I rang my Bell taya and shouted Jah! Until my voice cracked the car did not gree and stop o, the car then dived into the gutter, I came out and thanked God for saving me from agents of the dark forces.

After buying the car, we took it to his shop just to help add an extra later to the chair...and small small touch to the car just to love-vendor it a little...I.e adding leather to the sit as well as dashboard...only for him to tell me there is no catalyst...this and that is there...blablabla....had to spend another 500k...cos, I was a newbie...I couldn't ask him why did he not check all of these things before Oking the car.

Not knowing I have been Scammed

In 2010, I bought a Nigerian used car that almost made me commit suicide. Today, na radiator, tomorrow, na carburetor. I drove the car to an event one day, and that was the end. It never came back home with me.

It was a nasty experience. That was the year 2015 when I wanted to get a car for my wife. I actually saw the car advertised here on Nairaland and I went all the way to Igando Lagos from Ibadan with my mechanic. It was a corolla 1999 model (O kere j'owo e lo). It was a tokunbo with an asking price of 800k but after much haggling, we settled for 670k. I had a hunch that something was wrong with the car looking at its body and the way it sounds when you hit the body but I thought the presence of my mechanic was enough assurance that we couldn't have bought a bad vehicle and so, we paid for it.

It became clear that I had entered one chance when we returned to Ibadan and while waiting for the registration documents to come out, we had the chance to properly assess the car. It was a horrible purchase and there and then, I knew my mechanic was a devil. Nothing he could say could make me look at the car in a positive way. Long story short, we auctioned the car off after just a year plus at a ridiculous price.

That mechanic can never do well in life I swear!

It amazes me that people will go n buy without taking professionals along with them, I once saw a thread here about a guy that bought murano from a nairalander even when he knew nothing about cars n it’s part…… it later became a story that touch from real life angle


With my experience over the years, one thing u should always put at d back of your mind is that u are only free from troubles if the car is brand new, once it is Tokunbo, hand to hand no matter d grade u must work on d car either to suit your taste or something but the most important thing is that make sure all major parts are well in place

So if I wan spend money it won’t b on major part but minor parts probably body work,seat n few other minor things

Bought a tokunbo Highlander from a dealer, Car was dope from the picture and video he shared. I paid in full and he promised that it would reach Nigeria by 8 weeks.

Aje! It took over 3 months! Clearing took a while. The car was finally cleared and what I saw was different from the picture and video, port Rats already Feasted on the car and I spent over 300k to put into good look.

What broke my back was that the SUV dries up engine oil every 3 weeks, lol. We have to start buying engine oil every 3 weeks for the car before we eventually sold it.

But: IT IS A VERY SMOOTH RIDE! The AC is mortuary standard and the ride handles potholes gallantly
