I remember at DHL office in ikeja airport, customs call this my guy to come pickup his iPhone 11 promax he bought used at 300$ in 2019. They billed him 315$, and they value the item as new, even though he has the pro forma invoice. They told him if he doesn't pay, item will be seized.

The guy was just crying

Guy it has little to do with Customs, all items being imported have different rate of duty, 0%, 5%, 20% and 35%.This rate of duty is set my FEC for Customs to enforce.Next time you want to ship in any item, look within and compare the price, including, cost, insurance freight and duty cost, most times, you are better off buying in Nigeria...exactly what govt wants you to do.

You actually have to pay duties on what you import.

Only gifts and personal items are included.

If I ship expensive items from Aliexpress to the UK I'm billed for duties too.
Re: Exploitative Outrageous Duty Charges By Nigerian Customs by Ashirioluwa: 3:16pm On Dec 01, 2021
If you don’t want to pay custom duty then use the service of private shipping agents. You pay for shipping then you pick up your items at their warehouse.

Your best bet is to look for cash to get your items out. It even out since you already got free shipping

The Immigration boss had to go for a surprise visit to experience first hand the level of wickedness and corruption in this kwantri.

A lot of report against EMS and their sharp practices. Nobody does jack to correct it.

It's Nigeria and no longer a pity!

I couldn't find a suitable sub-forum for this topic, so I used the general. Kindly patiently read through, if there's anyone that can help - please kindly reach out.

I'm going to be apt and sincere here. So I ordered a musical studio equipment on the Aliexpress 11:11 sales day. The total sum I paid for the item at checkout was $280(114k naira). Free shipping was part of the deal, so it was mouth watering. Normally, I would have used the service of Nairaland trusted shipping agents like Justi4jesu, but she doesn't do Aliexpress the last time I checked.

Fast forward to today, I was called to come pick up my parcel at the local post office. The item was stated on the listing to be shipped through 'Aliexpress standard shipping', I don't know how it ended up in the care of EMS. I reached there, and some sort of invoice was brought out. The attending agent looked at the papers for a moment and told me I would be paying about 39,600 for the clearance. What!!!

I couldn't believe my ears, so I told her to please pass me the document for observation. I saw the estimated value of the item was put at #202,000 naira. How come? It stated on the paper that the custom duty was 10%,which is #20,000. Plus all other trumped up charges, it summed up to #39,600. Plus 1k5 for shipping from Lagos, over 40k. That's about $100, using the current official exchange rate.

I bought a $280 dollar item and I'm being charged $100 for collection? That's like 43% of the value. Even if I am stinkingly rich, which I am not; it's insane to pay such amount. It's like buying a 1milli worth car and paying 430k to clear it. I am an obedient citizen and all, but inflating the price of the item I bought just to cash out big through tariff screams corruption to me. I am very sure just a fraction of the amount will be remitted to government coffers.

Please if there's anybody who has an idea how to go about beating down this obviously outrageous charges, kindly help out. I can print out the issued invoice on the bought item as proof of price if there's a need. Thanks.

Lalasticlala and other mods, I will be glad if this can make front page for more awareness of this unjust situation. Thanks
Don't mind those saying nothing you can do. We are the one encouraging corruption. Go back to aliexpress, open dispute and get a refund when you have your money back in your account, you can then plan what to do next. DON'T PAY THAT MONEY , DONT NEGOTIATE WITH ANYBODY

Your purchase exchange rate is N407.
They must have used the parallel mkt rate in their own calculation. Just guessing anyway

Even if you start a protest about the daily light robbery in customs, some pro-government nincoompoops even here on this thread will fight and oppose it.

Ha! That's really crazy. Do you mean one has to pay about half the price value of what you ordered in order to get it. You are definitely wrong and are encouraging this unjust exploitation. Who does that? Pay half the prize for duty? It wouldn't even happen in North Korea. Even Kim won't be that heartless.
See my thread below, there is NOTHING you can do but pay, unless of course, you want to forfeit your item.

Simply write to the EMS manger of the region where you are requesting for re-evaluation and revaluation of the custom charges and attach your receipt. They will surely downward-review it.

Hmm, next time, chat with the seller. They make a provision for reducing the value of that item.
They could have listed the price at eg $40.
Anyway, you may refuse collecting the item. open despute in aliexpress. And get a refund.

please follow this advice. it works like charm.
you can take the seller to Aliexpress Court and request for refund.

We were told that with the coming on board of Treasury Single Account-TSA, federal government related corruptions would be a thing of the past; bro, negotiate for downward review of the charges and pay. My main concern is , what you receive from Aliexpress is markedly different from what you saw and paid for in terms of quality . Good luck !

To be honest, always check the custom duty rate of whatever you want to buy before you complete the transaction. If you check the rate, taxes, etc The duty they asked you to pay is in order.

Another option is to ask the seller to reduce the value of the item for custom declaration.

Customs no dey manufacture figures, they go by the goods classification.

Ask for the valuation officer and ask for a review of the CIF used. Go with evidence of the payment you made. When there's no invoice attached, the valuation officer uses estimates to calculate your duty.

OP better go and collect his items before they becomes "items lost in transit"....note that the person at the collection point have no power to negotiate and possibility of your items getting missing is very high...you brag about suing them if that happens though but be mindful you get justice ,may be before you are 80yrs old and that is if you can go through all the beaurecratic trouble...
