HELP: My Car Is Consuming Too Much Fuel. by mybad: 1:25pm On May 14, 2012
My 1996 Toyota Camry is no longer fuel efficient.
The car uses far more fuel than a plane.
It consumes 20 liters on the average for a 20km drive (Egbeda to Ikeja Airport) on a daily basis not minding the traffic. That’s about 1 liter per kilometer.
Just last week my car consumed about 100 liters of fuel for just office to home trips alone, a total mileage of 77 kilometers.
• I’ve serviced the engine
• I’ve changed plugs
• I recently serviced the Injector

…and changed the injector nozzle
A V6 doesn’t consume as much fuel.
Please kindly help with solution to save my monthly budget
A stitch in time they say saves nine.

Excessive fuel consumption can be a ightmare. I wish you success in resolving it.

Have you done a scan on the car? It is a 1996 Camry and should be OBD II compliant.

It will be worth the money to get a scan and figure the problem, instead of allowing roadside mechanics to be telling you to change this, or service that.

The prolem might be as simple as a faulty or even a dirty sensor somewhere, most probably in the fuel/igniton system. Only a scan can give you a definitive diagnosis.

There are scanner being sold on NL, scanning at workshops can be very expensive in the long run but a small investment of +/- N20,000: 00 on something considered valuable should be taken seriously by every car owner especially from 1996 up in order to avoid the headache that might come with trial and error system of diagnostic and resolution practiced in Lagos nay Nigeria! One question is are you serious about this 100liters for a hundred kilometer, because my own vehicle; a SUV-V6 consumes 68liters for about 563.15km (350miles)? If true, the vehicle may be long gone from return to the normal consumption.I seriously feel your pain. cry cry cry cry

Guy, that was just on the jocular side because the rate appears to be exaggerated and I am certainly not writing the car off.You should Naturally be getting 18MPG city and 26MPG Hwy (21 combined)as against 2.35MPG. No harm or pun intended.
Re: HELP: My Car Is Consuming Too Much Fuel. by cretin: 2:01pm On May 15, 2012
when did this problem start?

did you buy the car fresh toks or nigerian used.

its either ur maf sensor is whack or ur catalytic converter failed and the mechanic just removed it......the probable causes are too many...answer the questions above first.

i suggest you shud start thinking of the option of selling the car smiley

@femalyne i was about to say that. Your catalytic converter is gone. Thats it all the bad roads you bump in, its so easy to damage the exhaust especially the expensive catalytic converter. Okay i wish you all the best Run a simple scan. What i have noticed is that a lot car owners only worry about their can when it does not start or when it drinks their money as fuel.

The question i have for this car owner is very simple? Is your check engine light on? If so why are you asking a question meant for a computer. All the best

But Gulfer, how you dey add salt to injury na? See how bros come vex. Lol!

But bros e! Is like your car has set a record in the Guinness Book of Records for averaging 2 MPG. Lol! Abeg, na filling station or Refinery you carry under that your car? Because it cant be fuel tank anymore. Lol!

Honestly, I couldnt stop laughing since afternoon I saw this thread & with the way Gulfer helped the OP in analysing his situation for him. But the analysis didnt go down well with the OP, hence, the " Haba! Don't write off my car just yet. angry " See expression!

I still cant imagine how you have been driving the car in that condition, considering the amount of thick black smoke it must have been emitting from the exhaust tail. Because with that kind of consumption, definitely, must be giving black smoke symptom.

Like others have advised, scan the car first & you take it from there (even though I can diagnose & fix the excessive fueling issue without scanning it, if it was my car). Good luck.

I still dey laugh o!

Or, you can as well go through my posts one after the other. You will find what is wrong with your car & how to get it fixed there.

For the first time I'll have to say Ikenna might be wrong on that smoke part because at the rate the fuel is being used there should be a trail of gasoline following that Camry around town grin.

OP that check engine light is not for decoration, find out what it says
Re: HELP: My Car Is Consuming Too Much Fuel. by gulfer: 6:02am On May 16, 2012
@Ikenna and Sultan, you guys agree that is a world record in MPG that can make Toyota consider another business other than auto making. What I tried to say was tell @poster that for this to have happened, his car must be extraordinary. If he is in lagos, I can help with diagnosis with my PROSCAN at a price.

With the consumption rate, the check engine light should naturally be on. The scanner may not give you any diagnosis unless the CEL is on-you can trigger it by not screwing your gas tank cap securely and then start your engine, it should come on the. If after doing this it doesn't come on, maybe the bulb is out or the connections are short.
Re: HELP: My Car Is Consuming Too Much Fuel. by cretin: 2:22pm On May 16, 2012
some fraudulent mechanics/car sellers hv been known to disconnect the light to deceive unsuspecting people, so the check engine light might not be a guarantee

The auto gurus, my car is consuming fuel at alarming rate. Can't used 30 litres from Agege to VI.

With the check light on, the car was scanned and error code was P1491.

The ERG valve was removed and was thoroughly cleaned, the EGR chamber plate was cleaned as well but no improvement. The check light came back.

The EGR valve was replaced but no improvement. There is no black smoke emmitting from the exhaust.

The car is 1996 Honda Accord (F22B1), I4 but double exhaust. The EGR valve is located on the fuel rail.

Surprisingly, I got a manual on 96 Accord F22B1 from Honda Hookup today, a diagram from the manual depicts 2 EGR valves. 1 on the fuel rail and the other along the ABS pipe lines.

We have been working on the one on the fuel rail. Can ERG failure cause significant drop in fuel consumption efficiency?

I can hardly use this car because of this abnormal fuel consumption.

Seinna, Ikenna, Gulfer, Sultan and other gurus please help oooo.

Well firstly when it comes to scanning i do a discount for nairalanders so i scan for nairalanders at a discount of #6000...For the 96 camry its better you go for a scan cos when i got my 98 camry the check light had being removed by the cardealer, thankGod i had my scanner which opened up to me that the car plugs were bad...little little things but all this cardealers aint ready to spend a kobo to fix it and for the other person who complained about EGR well a friend once had such issue too and i also did a scan for a nairalander where we found that fault too but he called me back later that after changing the EGR the fuel consumption reduced durastically i.e faulty EGR can cause fuel consumption to increase. And also i'll love to let you know that if your fan thermostat has being removed your fuel consumption would increase too because continous working of fan wont allow the engine attain the required temperature and that would cause fuel consumption to increase too...If you so desire to come for a scan you can contact me on 08028290680

Have scanned it twice with the same error code of P1491.

The fans still have factory connection.

One step at a time, it is known that vacuum line going to the EGR valve usually cause this code to come up amongst others- so i would advice you check all the vacuum lines. Know also the funny thing about vacuum lines, they never break out in the open, always behind or under something. Best way to check them is to remove them one at a time so you don't get mixed up and check them over carefully. Make sure you have time to check all the lines one by one.
Good-luck!
Re: HELP: My Car Is Consuming Too Much Fuel. by stepedie: 10:02am On May 18, 2012
Another thing to sure of is hope that they've not tampered with the EGR wiring...Because this cars are quite sensitive to any little thing that happens to the sensor and before you know it they affect car performance and was it a new EGR sensor you got or a tokunbo

find attached the vacuum and vapour hose diagrams for your car (with ABS and w/o ABS). I will try and post on step by step diagnosis on this code. Hope it helps.
