Igboid:I don't think it will be wise to assume Opobians and Bonny people are Igboid when the local folks identify themselves as Ijoid. You see the Ijaws as a political franchise but I have been to Opobo and Bonny and this people don't see Ijaw as a political franchise rather they believe that they are a part and parcel of Ijaw. You claim that there is historical distortion and there is a conspiracy to wipe out the Igbo language from there but I have been to Opobo and Bonny and non of this your claim holds water as the people themselves has never believed they were Igbos. If you say Ijaw is a political franchise, can we also say Igbos are political franchise too? I have been to Aba, Onitsha, Enugu, Awka, Owerri and Orlu, the local folks identify themselves as Igbos and nobody else can identify their ethnicity with any other groups as far as the local folks in this Igbo towns have identified themselves as Igbo. Now if people of Bonny and Opobo has identified themselves as Ijaw, who is me and you to identify them as something else? Besides, if you feel there is a distortion of historical facts, the people you ought to be convincing is not us here on nairaland but the local folks in Opobo and Bonny. Me and you can't be here on nairaland identifying local folks of Igboid Enugu, Aba, Onitsha, or Ijoid Bonny, Opobo, Okirika or kalabari. These people already knows who they are irrespective of our opinion, our opinion is inconsequential as long as these people has already identify themselves. Have you even been to Opobo and Bonny? |

JANK23H:Most of them arguing blindly have not even been to Opobo or Bonny to get first hand knowledge of this two places. They sit in the comfort of their home and assume that a set of people are Igboid whereas they have not even ventured to meet this people for real. I can't seat in my home and assume the igboness of Anambra state or the Ijawness of Opobo, if I have doubt about their ethnicity, i venture out to this places and carry our a first hand investigation |

sinteiking:You guys should chill. Your land grabbing antics is getting out of hand. You claim even down to Ndoki in Abia state, is that not madness? A people that don't speak same language nor possess same culture with you. Bonny is contestable, because of Finima and the rest, but you see Opobo, those are pure Igbos. Besides, I met a Bonny girl this morning, who said bluntly she is not Ijaw but Egbani. What do you say about that? ![]() |

izac82:Anybody can just wake up and claim they met an unverified anonymous person who said they are from Bonny and Opobo and they are not Ijaws Your so called Bonny gal might just be another unverified anonymous person that may be real or not real. The bone of contention here is if the majority of people from Opobo and Bonny identify themselves as Ijaw or not. To get a answer, is to meet directly with the local folks on ground and not just testimonies from some random unverified individuals |

| Re: The True Identity Of Bonny/Opobo(UBANI) People Facts Versus Fiction by Igboid: 11:34am On Dec 06, 2021 |
sinteiking: I don't think it will be wise to assume Opobians and Bonny people are Igboid when the local folks identify themselves as Ijoid. The people speak Igbo as mother tongue. You must think they are dunce if there are not some of them who identify as Igbo. You see the Ijaws as a political franchise but I have been to Opobo and Bonny and this people don't see Ijaw as a political franchise rather they believe that they are a part and parcel of Ijaw. The locals don't identify as Ijoid. They identify as Bonny and Opobo, while being members of IYC and INC like the rest of non Ijoid groups in SS riverine terrain. There is a political and ethnic Ijaw in the SS . Ask around if you don't know the difference. You claim that there is historical distortion and there is a conspiracy to wipe out the Igbo language from there but I have been to Opobo and Bonny and non of this your claim holds water as the people themselves has never believed they were Igbos.Yes there's a historical distortion and have proven it here. Let me list it for you. ✓Alagoa fraudulently reduced Igbo presence in Bonny to Slaves ✓Early European records proved this to be false as Slaves can't be kings in Bonny, but we know that Early Bonny kings identified themselves to be of Igbo descent ✓Bonny and Opobo people have been repeatedly told that their Igbo language came from Igbo slaves and that keeping it makes them descendants of Igbo Slaves, that the only way they be Indigenes of Bonnyland is if they throw away their Igbo language ✓ To this end, there have been aggressive campaign anchored by the fraudulent historian himself Alagoa, since 1990s to make Opobo and Bonny people drop their Igbo language and culture for Kalabari language they dubiously termed "Ibani" language. These are not claims, these are all verified facts! If you say Ijaw is a political franchise, can we also say Igbos are political franchise too?Every clan in the Igbo ethnic group speak an Igboid language that is mutually intelligble to each other. In Ijaw, Epie-Attisa, Udekeme Engenni speak an Edoid language that is closely related to Isoko language. The Ogbia, Abureni, Andoni, Abua, Odual, Obulom (Abuloma people) all speak an Ibibiod language. None of these languages are in any way related to Ijaw language. If that's not a franchise, I don't know what else it is. How can people who speak unrelated full fledged languages, with each language having it's own sub dialects be a member of same ethnicity? Does it make sense to you? Now if people of Bonny and Opobo has identified themselves as Ijaw, who is me and you to identify them as something else? These people never identified themselves as Ijaws before the war. We can't decide for them who they want to be, but we want them to make that decision with all the available facts and information being made available to them, so that they can make an INFORMED decision. Because right now, every Opobo and Bonny person that have been embracing Ijaw language that I met, were doing so believing that his ancestors were Ijaws and that they switched to Igbo Language because of Igbo Slaves. That's the narrative Alagoa and the British post civil war propaganda sold. Besides, if you feel there is a distortion of historical facts, the people you ought to be convincing is not us here on nairaland but the local folks in Opobo and BonnyThere is a historical distortion, and the aim here is to make it a general knowledge that Alagoa and Ijaw nationalists from Bayelsa distorted Bonny and Opobo history. Atleast you now know that such distortion exists, likewise anyone else that would stumble into this thread in the future. We used this thread for brainstorming. We will soon spread the message using all available social media platforms. Until it reaches all and sundry. Our aim is basically to stimulate a discussion on the the topic, to force the topic into limelight and expose the likes of Alagoa or force him into a public debate. These people already knows who they are irrespective of our opinion, our opinion is inconsequential as long as these people has already identify themselves.Trust me, the people don't know anything. None of them have read any of the historical materials on Bonny and Opobo that we shared here. All they always had was Alagoa fraudulent distortions being repackaged and shoved down their throats yearly by IYC and INC. We are providing them with full information that Alagoa denied them, and then allow them make an informed decision on their identity and decision to throw away the Igbo language heritage their Igbo ancestors who were also Aboriginal settlers and kings of Bonny bequeathed them. That's the least we can do. We owe it to the Igbo Aboriginals and kings in Bonny, that their presence in the land be not reduced to the lowly status of slaves by Ijaw expansionists from Bayelsa led by Alagoa. |

Igboid:Don't not mind them bro. Imagine someone coming to tell Oyo people they are fulani. I am sure most Oyo people will not even answer them. The only reason ijaw people are concerned here is because they know a can of worms is about to be exposed. Like you have said, the message is simple. To let every true Bonny and Opobo born native make an informed decision from a historical point of view and not from Alagoa's fantasies. |

sinteiking:You altered their history. You pushed it down their throats that they are descendants of slaves. And now you are ambitiously working to enforce your language on them, making them believe that their mother tongue is an error. How desperate can one be? You guys are just pure evil in your quest to grab more lands for yourself. |

Igboid:With all these gibberish, you've indirectly insulted the intelligence of the Opobo and Bonny people. That they could be easily brainwashed into accepting who they are not? Pray tell, how were they made to believe they are Ijaws by Alagoa.Oh....he wrote the book and distributed to everyone in Bonny and Opobo;or they were all assembled to the market square and instructed to identify as Ijaws. I wonder how you reason sometimes. Do you know you are insulting these people? |
| Re: The True Identity Of Bonny/Opobo(UBANI) People Facts Versus Fiction by Igboid: 11:52am On Dec 06, 2021 |
izac82:The Ijaws know we are coming, that's why they started making moves on Ndoki recently, because Ndoki is the homeland of the early Bonny founders. If Ndoki remains Igbo, then they lose any historical debate on Bonny. It's their move on Ndoki that triggered the likes of myself. Trust me, the strategy is to be in their faces. We are not revealing everything here. |
| Re: The True Identity Of Bonny/Opobo(UBANI) People Facts Versus Fiction by izac82: 11:55am On Dec 06, 2021 |
sinteiking:Ask yourself that question. Does Ndoki in any way speak anything related to Ijaw? They are not even bilingual, but you are claiming them, knowing fully well that Ndoki is the root of Opobo and Bonny in extension. Like I said, you may end up triggering a never ending conflict if you don't remove your hands from what is not yours. We know how old Rivers state was bedeviled with crises, until Bayelsa state was created. Make una rest, una no wan gree. |

Igboid:All this things you are saying don't make sense to me if you have not been on ground and see for yourself what ethnicity the local folks identify themselves with. I will take you serious when you go this places and formally investigate. The locals associating with Ijoid association as already rubbish your claim of them not identifying with Ijaw, as one can't join an association without first identifying with such association. Can someone join Ohaneze or other sub Igbo association without identifying as Igbo first? All your assertion and theory are just academic excercise if you don't back it up with a field trip to determine the realities on ground |

| Re: The True Identity Of Bonny/Opobo(UBANI) People Facts Versus Fiction by Igboid: 11:58am On Dec 06, 2021 |
JANK23H:When you go on and tell them that their ancestors who were Igbo kings and founders of Bonny were actually Igbo slaves who bequeathed them the Igbo language. When you tell them that they become decendants of slaves for being who they are and speaking the language of their ancestors. When you keep forcing a dead Kalabari irritating language on them, and frown whenever they exhibit their Igbo true selves. Is that not an insult on them? Yes! A people can be serially brainwashed by withholding vital information from them or distorting them to serve a selfish purpose. Imagine the psychological trauma you Bayelsans have put those people through with your deliberate tampering and disfigurement of their history. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Especially the old man Alagoa. Very despicable behavior. You want them to be who they are not by deliberate manipulation of history. We want them to remain who they are, who they have always been, who their ancestors were, by showing them their true history. Let posterity be the judge between us and you who wants the best for them. |

emperorshaokahn:He is a Bayelsa guy. Most of them here are Bayelsans. Go to every Opobo and Bonny group and see them crawling everywhere there. We basically had to sanitize Ndoki groups from their infiltrations. These people are formidable, hardened and well financed for their expansionist schemes by INC and IYC. |

| Re: The True Identity Of Bonny/Opobo(UBANI) People Facts Versus Fiction by Igboid: 12:06pm On Dec 06, 2021 |
sinteiking:Ohanaeze Ndiigbo is not a franchise like Ijaw. The criteria to join Ohanaeze Ndiigbo is that the group has to be speaking Igbo language or related dialect as a mother tongue. The criteria to join INC and IYC is just to have 100 people from that community come and scream Asawana at Yenegoa, be sure to have crude oil, be riverine, and you are stamped Ijaw! Ijaw is not an ethnic group. It's a political franchise! Never compare it to Ohanaeze Ndiigbo. |

sinteiking:To be Igbo in post civil war NIGERIA is not easy. It comes with Political disfranchisement. Even obviously Igbo speaking groups like Etche, Ekpeye, Ikwerre, Ogba, and Ndoni will not come out to shout that they are Igbo, but you expect Bonny and Opobo to do so? We don't want them to shout they are Igbo, we want them to retain the Igbo language their Bonny Igbo ancestors bequeathed them, we want them to remain Bonny and Opobo ethnic nationality for now. We have no problem with them being part of IYC and INC, because we understand that both organizations are just Political Franchise that anyone can join. What we don't want is them throwing away who they are by adopting an alien Kalabari language, without having full information on how their Igbo Bonny kings and ancestors tried hard to bequeath them that language as legacy and the error they would have committed by not preserving it by falling preys to manipulations from Bayelsans. |
