Kudos prof, for the good work you're doing here sir.

I am a graduate of Biomedical Science ( clinical biochemistry). I would love to work on the last topic "Machine learning approaches toward personalized treatment of diabetes". I have worked on diabetes mellitus during my undergraduate days, but it's just on the biochemical parameters.

I am a bit versed in python programming, but just randomly into Machine Learning and AI.

I have reviewed some literature in regards to ML/AI in diabetes, but I would love if you can conceptualize the project sir.

Healthcare informatic/bioinformatics is a field i would love to specialise in the future and having publications here should seem right.

Thanks for consideration sir.

Healthcare bioinformatics is a large sector that recently has attracted the attention of entrepreneurs in industrialized countries, and the business is growing at an alarming rate. AI can be used in bioinformatics to aid clinical research and analysis, which can lead to the development of novel medications and vaccinations, disease diagnostics, and even pandemic forecasting. Wearable technology is a good illustration of how AI may be used with bioinformatics. Many types of wearable technology, such as fitness trackers and smart jewelry such as watches and rings, are already familiar to consumers, and they make personal use of the data collected.

Given your academic background and knowledge of Python, I believe this topic is a suitable fit for you. Take a look at some background material on the subject first.

There are a few basic requirements for each Machine Learning/AI project:

--- Data: You will need lots of medical data from at least 8000 diabetic patients. The more the data the better! The source of the data is important and you must also know what type of features are needed to build such a model.

----- Data Processing (cleaning and tunning): Learn how to clean the data

--- Training the data: Learn how to train the data

---Test and validate: the trained model will need to be exposed to unseen data to test and validate its performance.

--- Evaluate optimized model: You need to optimize the trained model with unseen data.

---Deploy the model: You will need to deploy your model mostly a user interface either web-based on a mobile app.

---Update deployed model: As new data comes in, it's advisable to keep updating the model.

This project is conceptualized as shown in this image below, I extracted it from this site:

Good afternoon Prof, I'm currently having my MSc under Social Science (Budgeting and Public Financial Management). I came across two journals on using AI to make smart public budget. I'm sure this is a new field that I would love to go into but I'm afraid I might not be able to carry out such research due to my poor & no background in computer science etc..

√ What would you suggest I do in this instance?
√ Could you also suggest some topics at the Masters and PhD level;
√ What are the relevant skills I should be learning now considering my interest in going for PhD afterwards? .....thanks for always

Thanks for this sir.

Diabetes which is a carbohydrate disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due insulin defficiency and resistance leads to many complications. Early diagnosis and proper sequencial therapeutic interventions reduce incidence of complications and increase life expectancy.

Though the treatment plan after diagnosis depends on severity and age, the first line of treatment is change in lifestyle and use of biguanide. After the initial intervention, the response level is checked, if there is a positive response, status quo is maintained but a HBA1c level <7 leads to inclusion of basal insulin, and other hypoglycemic agents to the interventions.

AI now comes in here, it will allow us to know the appropriate therapeutic interventions for each person ( personlised treatment) after diagnosis using a known pattern, instead of more of a trial and error treatment type. We have particular treatment regimen that works for each patient.

The project is a long term cross sectional study. Getting 8000 data set means working with all tertiary healthcare in a geopolitical zone( the average diabetic patient attending endocrinology clinic of a tertiary clinic a years is less than a 1000).
Thanks so much for this sir, i will be involving my colleagues in this, and update you as it progress.

Hi,

Yes, due to the sheer scale of the federal and state governments' combined budgets, operational efficiency is a particularly crucial issue. The public budget has been plagued by many types of fraud that have become increasingly difficult to detect. Because of the vast amount of digital data in this era of digital technology, AI and machine learning are well-suited for public budget fraud detection as well as smart public budgeting. In fact, smart public budgeting and detection of budget fraud are already in use in industrialized countries.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are subsets of Computer science. To learn and use AI and ML, you don't have to be a computer scientist or even study computer science. I've never studied computer science at university, but I've learned a lot on my own and developed some specific devices and systems that use various aspects of computer science, engineering, and software engineering.

Among the things I've self-taught is a variety of programming languages that I believe will be valuable for my ambitions and hobbies.

-----Python and its various libraries: I learned this because Python is a general-purpose programming language that focuses on code readability and includes numerous packages and tools for working with scientific data. With Python, you can learn AI and ML, you can Web and Internet Development, you can develop various Desktop GUIs and use them in various Business Applications.

----AI and ML: This just involves some algorithm which you can process via python, R language or other languages, some statistics, and data analysis. This simply entails some sort of algorithm that you can run in python, R, or other languages, as well as some statistics and data analysis. You can learn AI and machine learning for free online using Udemy, Freecodecamp, Youtube, Coursera, and Udacity, for example.

Basic of AI and ML are Python or R for Data Science, Statistics for Data Science, and Math for Data Science. Learn those.

√ What would you suggest I do in this instance?

Basic of AI and ML are Python or R for Data Science, Statistics for Data Science, and Math for Data Science. Start with those and have in mind that you want to learn to do projects, so find resources that have projects, without practical practices you won't do anything.

√ Could you also suggest some topics at the Masters and PhD level;

Look for existing issues or things that aren't being done well in your regions and see what you can do to solve or improve them. Then, using a credible database, publishers, and other sources in your subject of interest, do literature reviews. Read a lot of reports in your field of interest, search for knowledge gaps, and see how you might fill them. Make a list of potential solutions, narrow it down, then meet with responsible and knowledgeable supervisors to fine-tune your ideas.

√ What are the relevant skills I should be learning now considering my interest in going for PhD afterwards? .....thanks for always

Learn how to collect data, which types of data to acquire, how to analyze data using modern tools such as MAtplotlib, how to fine-tune data for better visualization, and how to conduct research and write publishable reports in respected journals. If you're interested in AI and machine learning, start with the basics.

Best wishes

May I ask what you meant by “journal proposed article”?

Please where can I submit it for free.

First, I assume you completed your literature review and used multiple published research articles in doing so. You can look at the journals where those articles were published and publish your work in any of them because your literature review will point to certain connected topics of your manuscript.

It's not just about finding free journals to publish your study; it's also about finding trustworthy publications to publish your work. Only journals that are indexed in well-known, international indexes will be counted. Many people publish, yet because they publish in unknown, unrecognized, or respected publications, their progress is hampered, and their work's visibility is harmed.

Please visit any of these publishers and look for their subscription-based journals that are not open access if you want to publish in reputed free journals:

Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Wiley.

There is no need to list anyone's name because you conducted your own study. You are able to self-publish.

Thanks for your response, much appreciated sir.

Journal proposed journal means I wrote it specifically to be published in a journal and it's wasn't an academic requirement.

Many thanks Sir

Recent Publication From our Lab: Low-cost flower dye-based solar cells with 7.18% Sunlight conversion efficiency

Solar photovoltaic energy is now widely regarded as one of the most promising, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly renewable energy sources. This research used dye derived from flowers to create dye-sensitized solar cells with high sunlight conversion efficiency.

Do you want to learn more about low-cost dye-sensitized solar cells or are you working on this?

For stuffs like scheme such as the one in that paper, I use adobe illustrator because it can produce vector images that can be scaled to any size without loss of quality, ideal for printing and high-resolution displays.

For data analysis I use latest version of prism or oringlab…for visualization I use my own Python-MAtplotlib based written desktop software or prisms.

Congratulations!

There are no exact questions to anticipate.
Just explain what you did,why you did and how you did.
Emphasize on your "Discussion'' and ''Conclusion'' .
This is your work, so you must own it.
You are responsible for everything you did.

Addendum: Endeavour to maintain 'eye contact' with the External Examiner!

Good luck to you!

You're more than welcome. Your chosen research topic is both fascinating and useful. You'll largely be working with raw primary data, and I believe you'll be able to publish a lot because there are so many concerns in Africa dealing with prisoners and their wellbeing.

As soon as you've been accepted for a PhD, your possible supervisor should start making contact with various prison centers, and you may also need to make contact with legal institutions to follow up on persons who have been released from prisons to learn more about their well-being.

I'm sure there may be some sort of reform and rehabilitation if you go really practical (not theoretical) and if there are many people like you wanting to go this route.

To receive some study money, you may check into numerous NGOs and other international organizations that deal with human rights and community services.

Yes. Natural Language Processing.
In my MSc, I applied data mining techniques on Nigerian sentiment. Basically it was on extracting sentiment analysis from Nigerian tweets as regards the administration of Willie Obiano of Anambra State Nigeria.

I propose to do is to develop a speech recognition tool, which transcribes clinicians’ speech into an electronic health record. Preferably local Nigerian language.

What do you think?
