What is your purpose for travel and what do you intend to achieve? As a Masters degree student, what problem can you solve and what can you offer? If you can defend your certificate, then it might not be a waste afterall.
I have an MSc in Statistics, so I intend to use the knowledge gained to apply for a Data science program in any of the above country.

At the bolded yes most times true but the later not necessarily true as I have seen people with no prior travel experience been issued visa plenty of times.

I will say your first assertion was more accurate.

Hello travel guru's,

This thought keeps lingering in my mind for quite some time now and I taught I should drop it here for public opinion.

Please o, does having an MSc degree in a Nigeria institute really guarantee the possibilities of one securing a US/Canada visa?

Please Nairalanders, what's your take, kindly drop your taught on what your opinion.
Not necessarily. A lot depends of your motivation to travel. If you’re traveling for graduate studies, and you’ve been offered admission into a US or Canadian college, that might provide some merit, provided you meet every other criteria necessary to be allowed entry into the country.
Let me say this . American and Canadian government understand that most Nigerians simply want a way out of hardship in Nigeria. They also know how hard working Nigerians are.If you’ve worked for a US owned company in the past and a background check on run on you and your records are clean, your chances become higher and brighter.

Currently now, yes it won't be easy for you without good travel experience, unless you have a strong reason with strong evidence to convince the VO why you want to travel.

If you are traveling as a tourist without prior travel experience, forget it.

If you are traveling as a student with good sponsorship and academic background, you stand a great chance.

If you are traveling as an immigrant going to meet his or her spouse, yours is over sure, nothing concern you with travel experience.

If you are traveling for business...then you ought to have good travel experience.

Actually, I don't have the intension of going for a PhD there,

Rather, the plan is to use my MSc. Degree I'm statistics to boost my chances of applying for another Masters degree program in Data Science.

Please how viable could that be?

You are very correct.... Travel history works well for Yankee..

Just do uk, ireland, france then with a mix of switzerland and italy, then your chances of getting a visa is high.

All they do is call in for your travel history and if you have any criminal records.

For PhD in usa you don’t need masters, You can go from Bsc straight to PhD. Masters in naija if you have the intention of traveling abroad through F1 sef is a waste. I think the only advantage is they will remove a course from the number of courses you will take.

tradepunter do you mean to say in countries like UK, italy, France, Switzerland a Masters degree holder has better chances of securing their visa?
