It's useless because your academic qualifications have little or nothing to do with obtaining a US or Canadian visa. Someone with a BSc who got admitted into a PhD program can obtain a US visa, so you see? It's useless. The key question is: what's your purpose for applying for a visa?
It's not useless if he's planning to migrate via Express Entry

Actually, I don't have the intension of going for a PhD there,

Rather, the plan is to use my MSc. Degree I'm statistics to boost my chances of applying for another Masters degree program in Data Science.

Please how viable could that be?
You can use it for admission purpose although I don’t think it is necessary because if you have good undergraduate grades, good S.o.p and good GRE score you will get admission for Data science. But don’t mention to the vo that you are going for a second masters to me it looks like a red flag.

Hello travel guru's,

This thought keeps lingering in my mind for quite some time now and I taught I should drop it here for public opinion.

Please o, does having an MSc degree in a Nigeria institute really guarantee the possibilities of one securing a US/Canada visa?

Please Nairalanders, what's your take, kindly drop your taught on what your opinion.
It is useless. Instead of spending that two years for MSc by which your age would have increased and your points will be affected, just use your BSc. Also note that when you get there, you can take student loan and quickly run a program that will be beneficial to you and your future there

If you mean study visa, then yes.

PS: Having an MSc is not a prerequisite for many PhD programs in the US and Canada, but an MSc will definitely improve your chances of admission. I am a testament.

I have an MSc in Statistics, so I intend to use the knowledge gained to apply for a Data science program in any of the above country.
I believe you should be able to get admission for Data Science program, you just need to convince them as to why the degree is important after already obtaining an MSc.

Thank you for sharing this Omololaeni. But my questions are?

Do you mean to say that if am to apply for a student visa to US, I should not include that I have obtained an MSc degree in my application form?

Secondly, must I have a GRE to be eligible for Canadian or US visa?

Workable. Your story must just be convincing enough.

Some programs might require you to write GRE for admission, start by checking what each program that you are interested in requires.

Thank you abdullahi45 but can that be possible since I don't have a GRE.

Ques 1. If you are applying for masters you can mention it to the school you may be lucky to get a course waived for you when you begin lectures but to the vo it is not important. (Remember I said if you are applying for masters o but if it is PhD you can mention it to the vo)
Ques 2. During covid some schools waived GRE/GMAT for Data science but I think they are now requesting for it.

Really. Please how did you go about that and what visa method did you apply.

And if you don't mind, can I slide into your DM?

Wow, Omololaeni you did justice to the question. However do you advice I go ahead with applying for another Masters or go further to apply for a PhD?

Anyone is fine o
Masters: short duration but you may not get full funding
PhD: Long duration but you may get full funding. Pls I said “May” o and not “will”.
The goal is to hustle there you are only going through study route so if you ask me I will say masters. But you have better chances of getting a visa if you have fully funded PhD offer plus sweet Stipends

tradepunter do you mean to say in countries like UK, italy, France, Switzerland a Masters degree holder has better chances of securing their visa?
Stop emphasizing on the degree.... It doesn't matter.

Someone with no degree but with good money that travels a lot have easy passage to any nation on earth...

So your bank account matters more.... although if your masters is from the uk your chances are good because it means you spent good amount of years on a foreign soil.

Now am beginning to feel like I just wasted my precious time and money to obtain a Masters degree in Nigeria.

If I had used that money for business, perhaps,it would have multiplied greatly
Why think like that

Well that's the consequences of the hardship in the country

Remember some people invested 10times of what you spent on Msc on business and it still crash

Your msc certificate is yours forever

Jehovah will make a way

You are very correct.... Travel history works well for Yankee..

Just do uk, ireland, france then with a mix of switzerland and italy, then your chances of getting a visa is high.

All they do is call in for your travel history and if you have any criminal records.
What type of visa, would one be able to work with it?

Or are you just talking about visiting visa?

if you are less than 31, with 3 years experience, high ielts scores 8777 and above with msc. It will give you high points for canada express entry, for usa its of no use in visa process.
