The Federal Government has proposed a legislative framework that would stop the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) from revenue collection, saying the role was a distraction to the service.

According to the government, the sole responsibility of collecting revenue should be domiciled with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) while NCS facilitates trade.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, stated this at a one-day public hearing on a bill for an Act to repeal the Customs and Excise Management Act (2004) and the Nigeria Customs Service (establishment) Bill.

The session was organised by the House Committee on Customs. Sponsor of the bill and Chairman of the Committee, Leke Abejide, said the bill sought to rejig the board of customs and excise management with competent and result-oriented technocrats.

It is customs that you will meet at first contact!
You will run into serious problems if at first contact the only thing you are showing customs official is a receipt that they themselves cannot verify!

This is one of the reasons why tinapa had serious problems!
People why presenting unverifiable and frivolous receipts!
By the time customs did investigation (people were found to be defrauding the fg)

Awesome! That customs boss that doesn't like wearing their uniform will be mad at this news. I hope he doesn't use his influence to stop the bill from passing in the house. Nigeria has come to a point where you don't announce anything until you finish your homework because there are too many evil people in this country.

Baralatie, please the world has moved and you need to follow the trend. All customs needs is to have access to an FIRS portal where they can verify all payments. This life no suppose hard, na we dey make am hard. This move makes sense. Let's see how they will bring juju to their offices to kill themselves because they enjoy bribes.

I support it though it will still be looted same way it is right now but you see those customs they are worst than police. Only in my country customs intimidate citizen even went as far to raid and burnt down a whole village just in a civil matter.
