I got a message from a loan company last week about my younger brother that he’s owing 30k they also sent me his picture. Meanwhile the picture they sent me was from 3years ago. Then I called him and verified that was when I got to know that the person that stole his missing phone actually applied for the loan. Now he’s the one to pay back. What a loss !!!

But i guess its just a marketing strategy and if you didnt activate the account nothing will happen.
Im my case i dont even own a gtb account but i use their Atm in my area a lot....with my different bank cards.... so i guess they must have used AI to see me as a potential client that may want to open a gtb account since i use their Atm a lot.
They still send me messages occasionally to remind me i have not activated my account i just ignore the message

I swear UBA did the same thing for me ooo. Upon the fact that i have an active account with them, they just sent me a msg one day containing the account number, i was so shocked.
Till today whenever I try to use their USSD service, the strange account pops up with my own account.. i don't know what to do.

This aspect I bolded made alot of sense to me.

There are people I meet, once I exchanged phone number with them for a future meeting, I start getting stupid messages, like you won this, you won that, after you applied for that.

I will just delete such person. Nah old scam format.

So I met this business man, about 2 days later, GTB I have never entered in my life sent me thesame message this guy received, last year. They even wished me happy birthday this year.

But as person wey know banking well, I knew that message can only come from a scammer who has an insider in GTB.

Once that account is activated, you start paying loans you never took or applied for.

You are wrong..... The guy may have forgotten he opened an account with USSD cos that's the only time, he will be asked to go for regularization. No GT marketer will open an account if he's documentation is incomplete except tier 1 that requires only passport but can't take more than 300k. Infact, if he's documentation is not complete, it will not even be approved for opening not to talk of uploading.

if you are using a recycled number, you are bound to experience this or you have a used their USSD code unknowingly to create an account.

Yes, with loan shark companies. With normal banks, they all have tier1 or so account one can open online without going to the bank and it can take up to 300k.
Seems I heard the scammer can operate the account (sending & withdrawing) with another such account for some time. Then, they'll be able to take loan with the account and then abandone it.
The banks then go after the original owner of the details for recovery of the loan.

I remember the guy also said if they get hold of sim card that has a salary account attached to it, they get loan easily with it.

2. The OP submitted his BVN for a program, loan, or things of sort and an account was opened with it in select banks (not limited to GTBank alone). Some were opened in Access even.

Google SANEF. Lots of people got a wet season payment on an account opened for them in different banks with their BVN.

I have been receiving email from GTB showing me how I carried out transaction on my GTB Account meanwhile I never opened account with them
