Nigerians in general have a primitive mentality about accents. Jamaicans, Spaniards, Americans and British people are using their own accents to make income. In Nigeria if you have accent they laugh, if you don't have they laugh, if you have their own they will fight you, if you have your own, fight. Forming up and down to no gain.

not just a yoruba problem. everything in nigeria is an excuse to discriminate and hate
Here in NY , they make fun of some Southern accents, same way londoners make fun of the Brummie accent . I have been to Jamaica severally and KIngstonians[kingston] make fun of rural Jamaicans like Westmoreland or St anne. I believe that PPL in major Cities always make fun of folks from rural areas.......its not just in NIgeria.

This is my last reply to you on this. Even if you are born there, you are still green.

Accent is a big deal in America. Forget about foreign accent for now.

Southern accent are laughed at or derided the way we laugh at people from hinterland or rural accent here or anywhere.

Americans try to blend or change their accent to the region they move to. In an interview, a New York candidate for School board head said he would never give up his accent for Boston accent.

London accent change from class to regions. Magret Thatcher British PM had a low class accent, married into upper class and changed her accent.

No need to argue this, most informed people here know this. Don't come here telling us you were born there. If you are, stay put in Bronx or Brooklyn (with local distinct accent) without knowing your surroundings.

Even then, you should know better.
I have lived in NY for more than 30 yrs........Your head dey there jor!!!

You don't expect an Egba man to travel to Ondo state and be speaking Egba, he would rather speak Lagos accent.

It's very easy to hide state of origin with Lagos accent
Well....!

Not exactly but an Awori+Ijebu+ some Egba syncretized accent
100% agreed!
And the factor is that, most Lagos towns are In Ogun state previously.

Then the dialects clashed and syncretized

I think you guys are confusing the central Yoruba (without dialect) with the Lagos accent. There's a general Yoruba spoken by most Yorubas that have mixed with other Yorubas. The Lagos accent is a partly adulterated form of Yoruba mixed with slangs and stuff.

Ofodirinwa:
Nobody in New York or London will laugh because someome has an accent lol. I live in the US and that's extremely bizarre. In a place like NY you will spend your entire life laughing because the average New Yorker will hear at least 5 accents from all over the world daily. I promise you this is only a Nigerian mentality born out of abnormal thinking, low self esteem and under-exposure.

Nigerians that come to the US newly think accents are funny, or laugh about how people pronounce things, but after a year they usually realize that mentality is low and adjust. Its usually ppl that have never travelled or people who haven't been outside of nigeria for a consistent year that carry the mentality.

If you tell 10 Americans that an Anambra man says Lefridgator 9 won't even know you're trying to tell them something funny. The remaining 1 will say 'well its not their first language'. It is like laughing because someone used their left hand.

Unless that is not what your saying.
I don’t know how it is in New York but in Cali, we make fun of accents, we make fun of foreigners who are fresh off the boat, it’s not to discriminate we just find it funny. America is racist as f***.

Thank you sir, one has to come on social media and argue with someone who claimed he was born and raised in New York but does not know the difference between Brooklyn and Bronx accent. Not to mention Southern accent.

He even used the word "primitive" for those who know the difference and got likes!

The finest form of Yoruba is Lagos-Yoruba, spoken mostly by upper/middle class indigenes.

It's different from pure Yoruba, being alluded up there.

Which one is local accent!

I was born and raised in Ibadan. When I speak my Ibadan I speak it with relish. Whoever wants to tutor me how to or how not to pronounce some words will end up being tutored. I have not time for "igi la'gbe a gb'oku" (Na tree we carry, we no carry dead body kind of excuse)

If you change your environment or perhaps travel outside of Nigeria, then you would understand.

Lol.. I think there are somethings we need not be ashamed of. One of such things is who we are as a person, irrespective of place and time. It is like I travelled to Kenya and the Kenyans started laughing at my Nigerian accent of English. Then I will feel obliged to learn Kenyan tone. Or you go to Ghana and you are afriad to wear your agbada because some people who don't know what it's to clad in agbada will entertain themselves with laughter.

As long as I speak meaningful, sensible and Comprehensive language, the "laughee" will be made to know he has spoted a wrong target.

It is what it is . Lagos Yoruba accent is the current acceptable Yoruba accent amongst above average Yoruba's.

Except if one wants to catch cruise of himself

The Kenya you are talking about, you can't compare Uhuru's English accent with Raila.. There are general accent for English as well as long as you do not use your local accent to pronounce words

That is what I'm saying. There is nothing like local accent. I never for once seen one accent superior to the other.

The scope of usage might be different, but one is not local or subjective to the other. If one is truly educated in the true sense of it, there is no way one will not make a mess of one's education the moment one starts to imitate what one is not or try to remove oneself from what one is not. Ko si bi a se le see ebolo ti ko ni run'gbe.

In those days as a little boy, I use to watch Richard Akinjide's colleagues laugh at him with his perfect English at Bar but he could not drop the "sh or s" like a New Yorker.

There is another guy who would not speak Yoruba, always expressed himself in English except when with people who know him closely.

Come to find out the reason was that his Ogbomosho Yoruba would catapult a dead body! grin grin

Oya, if you're from Cali what does it mean to 'bang slob' and in what context would that phrase be used?

Lagosian giveaway, the accent does not have the “r” sound. They pronounce it awh. The educated ones though learn to pronounce. If you learn English before the Lagos Yoruba, that is. But the other way around, forget it! R will sell you out! grin

Please is Lagos accent still not Yoruba ni?

If you put Ekiti, Oyo, Ogun, Osun people together to have a discussion, using their local accents to speak would definitely cause confusion in the room cos some local accents are just too konk to understand.

But with Lagos accent, it's very easy for them to understand each other

Most part of the world if you move to the capital city from your village, your friends or family members would tell you that you need to "sharpened up" how you talk and talk like city person. There are street language or words and slangs you need to learn.

Its not only Lagos Yoruba that will be heard.
Ibolo, igbomina, Oyo Yorubas are widely used.

It dominates Yoruba movies. That's why I refused to agree that Lagos Yoruba is widely accepted or so.

Hardly will you see Yoruba stars speaking Lagos dialect or their own dialects (unless otherwise stated)

Who one is
"Mide Ti de" - Lagos dialect

"Mo ti de" - widely used dialect which is (Oyo, Ibolo, Igbomina) used in Essays, Exams, Movies and songs.

Your words no hold joor, except prove otherwise that Lagos dialect is widely accepted.

Funny thing is even the actors and actress that lived in Lagos all their life used Oyo/Ibolo/Igbomina.

Faithia balogun (that benin girl) lived Lagos throughout, go and watch her movies and tell me the dialect she's using.
