Hehe. Satan is sitting comfortably in Aso Rock. To everybody who voted this disaster into office...may you suffer twice what the others have to suffer because of ur poor judgement and lack of sense.

Is Satan also sitting in Mexico, France, the US, Australia, the UK, India, etc...where such taxes exist? or in the WHO who recommends such taxes.

We should all blast Bubu for being a bad leader, but not the few times when he does do the right thing.

Yes, they do.

And yes, other countries have brought in similar taxes for similar reasons.

Do you expect anything good from Buhari. The consequences of running a country by inefficient people full of tribalism. Nigeria can't be better.

How has such tax reduced sugar consumption, diabetes and obesity in other developed countries??
Do they even believe that imposition of additional tax will reduce consumption of sugary carbonated drinks?? We will still buy it because we are Nigerians. We are used to harsh government policy because we have thick skins. They should just tell us they want to give that as an excuse for impoverishing us further.

So, when France, the UK, South Africa, India, Australia, USA , etc brought in similar taxes, it was because they were run by indifferent people full of tribalism too?
Or all these countries?

Is the WHO backing such a decision because it is run by tribalists too?

Do you need soft drinks to live?

Bubuhari is running a bad government, but he has made a good decision for once.

Will that stop us from buying or it'll just add to the hardship of common man. undecided

This should have been put on those costly wines and not soft drinks

If you can buy soft drinks on a regular basis, you are not poor.

Besides, soft drinks are unhealthy. And cause more harm than good. Like wine (which should be taxed).

Nigeria is just following other countries and the WHO .

Countries like Canada, the US, the UK, India, South Africa, Colombia, Chile, France, etc etc...with similar taxes.

And we need the money...so long as it reduces our dependence on loans, its good for me.

Good evening to you.

It's because some of you haven't seen the complications of diabetes, like kidney disease, eye problems, leg problems, chronic pain, etc etc...which cost government a lot of money to treat (yes, healthcare is subsidized in this country...it's why your bills are not in the millions of naira like in the USA, and we have insurance , limited, but there)

Chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc, cost governments the world over a lot of money, and not just healthcare money...a person admitted in hospital with complications of diabetes is a worker not producing...money gone.
Health is subsidized in this country? Are you kidding me? Have you ever being to a general hospital or you are sitting in the comfort of your bedroom and typing this. Do you even have an idea of what public health insurance is like? My landlords daughter was admitted in the ICU of LUTH but not without paying 350k first asides paying for card before being attended to. Please let's be serious here.

I am not the food police. As a dietitian, I don't believe eliminating unhealthy foods is realistic or effective. But I do believe that it's all about changing our environment. That means making healthy choices easy and attractive—and unhealthy choices just a little bit harder.

That's the idea behind the soda tax. The controversial concept is to tax manufacturers or distributors of soda and other sugary beverages (like sports drinks and energy drinks), who would then pass along the cost to the consumer in the form of higher prices. It was approved in Berkeley, California and is being pitched in other U.S. cities as well. There's heated debate on both sides of the issue for sure, but here's why I think it makes sense:

Sugary drinks are a known health risk. I think we can all agree that's soda isn't a nutritional superstar. It does nothing for the body except provide calories in the form of sugar. There are zero health benefits to soda, only potential health risks like increasing the risk for obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Soda and sugary drinks are now the number-one source of added sugar in the diet!

The money could be put to good use. Money raised from soda taxes could be directed toward programs that make people's lives healthier. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a federal tax of just one cent for every 12 ounces of soda would raise $1.5 billion a year. That money could be put toward healthier school meals, community playgrounds and gardens, and programs to counter the obesity epidemic.

It's helping in other places. When Mexico taxed sugary drinks (and junk food!) in 2013, consumption of soda declined, particularly among the poorest consumers. That's important, since poverty makes people more vulnerable to obesity.

It worked with cigarettes. Though some people say a soda tax wouldn't make an impact, it certainly did with cigarettes. Taxes truly did drive down rates of smoking—especially among young people. A soda tax could do the same for kids and especially teens, who are heavy consumers of soft drinks.

The tax isn't a punishment for drinking soda, and it doesn't take the choice away. But it may just make people think twice about choosing it—or buy it less frequently. And that could have major and lasting public health benefits

The fact that she is paying 350k and not 2million or more as in other climes is why I say health care is subsided in Nigeria

In a private hospital, the deposit would start at 500000 naira or more. (some may even take a million)..and that's just the begining.

A CS in Nigeria costs less than 2000 dollars. In the US, it's 15000 dollars or more.

If she was on NHIS, it would have cut the cost a bit even.

It is also why we have bad care in government hospitals as subsides prevent profits being made....

(icu care is very very expensive, either way. In America, people organise gofundme to help pay ICU bills. It's that bad.)

Keep on taxing the the south then share the proceeds to the north. Wetin concern Aboki with coke.
When will he tax kunu and brukutu?
Govt would tax where there is huge revenue. Kunu and brukutu products are not money-spinning. Aside that, it's done in a low production way.

Wonder why this government sees the masses as their only means of raising funds. What happened to cutting the cost of governance in addition to to reducing/eliminating wastes in the system?

The masses are experiencing tremendous hardship, why squeeze them more?

1.Most people in the countries that have taxes on soft drinks don't complain about it, only the experts.

2.If you don't want to pay the tax don't drink soft drinks. It's healthy and saves you money
