Am I biased? How come I hate Park View Estate and yet I love Tafawa Balewa Square. I should hate both of them for the same reason, shouldn't I?


Well I guess that the difference is that Tafawa Balewa Square is still being used for public good and it still serves some of the purposes of the old Race Course, whereas Park View Estate simply represents the destruction of Ikoyi Park.



Race Course used to be a big open field in the centre of Lagos. People could watch horse races there on Saturdays (it was big business), cricket on Sundays and kids could play football there on week days evenings. It was like one huge park in the centre of Lagos. The Gowon Administration converted a large part of it into a concrete stadium/parade ground, another part of it into a remembrance arcade and the only part that was left in its original green state was the cricket oval.

Many people hate the conversion of the beautiful open green land into a concrete jungle.


Ikoyi Park was a large and beautiful park on the northern edge of Ikoyi, just beside the Lagoon. People had picnics there in the evenings and at weekends. Many relationships that blossomed into marriages began at the Ikoyi Park. You could see beautiful birds like cattle egrets and other such creatures at the park.

Then one day someone had an idea to build beautiful and expensive houses at the edge of the park. The houses overlooked the park and the idea was that people would pay extra for the beautiful view. And so they built more houses and even more houses until we had a Park View Estate and no park to view.

Murtala Square (formerly known as Kaduna Race Course) is a public square in Kaduna. It was historically the venue of horse racing events and it is also the location of the Kaduna Polo Club ground, Kaduna State Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua Indoor Sport Hall among others.

The square also hosts facilities like gymnasiums, an indoor sport hall, football fields, a hockey pitch, etc. Many public events are held at the square, such as the Kaduna Grand Durbar, Kaduna Centenary Celebrations, Nigeria's Independence Day parade, May Day, Inauguration Ceremony of Governors, Army Day, Human Rights Day, etc.


The square was in a bad shape and the administration of Governor Nasir El-Rufai decided to remodel, reconstruct and renovate it. The renovated Murtala Square was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari today. Here are pictures of the square.

so are u saying that because elrufai remodelled murtala mohammed park (which a local government can do), this is the best that any governor can do for kaduna state? dont you think your standards are very low?

Please go to Kaduna. That park is the least of things done by El Rufai, he has improved infrastructure more than any other governor in Kaduna history, except Makarfi.
