Good afternoon everyone.

My younger brother last week said he was quitting school after the ASUU strike was called off. That he doesn't like the course he's studying cos they aren't being taught anything (surveying & geo informatics) 200level.

Initially he put in for computer science but ended up there.

Now this decision of his is giving headache to my parents, so I suggested that since he's wanted to do computer programming maybe he should be sent to a top school where he can learn rather than rewriting jamb to go and study computer science..

I know people learn over the web on a self taught basis but I'd like an environment where he can go daily and then meet other persons with similar interests etc.

Please can anyone direct us appropriately on how to go about it. Thanks

He can rewrite jamb and put in for computer science. S degree is a prerequisite to getting a work visa except he plans to only work for Nigerian companies with his programming knowledge or a few remote jobs. A degree as useless as it might be still has its purpose.

He can learn programming on his own honestly. If you insist on going to a bootcamp then look at places like univelcity and stutern.

If I may ask must it be a cs degree? Or can you use any degree in other fields to get a work visa assuming you already have relevant work experience in the field.

By the way stutern requires that you have an undergraduate degree and have completed nysc as a prerequisite for admission.

He should enroll in aptech,I’m currently studying Advanced Diploma in software engineering(ADSE)there(enugu branch). It’s a two year course at the end of which i’ll be awarded the diploma certificate.
Aptech is affiliated with middlesex university london.
Middlesex has 4 campuses(malta,dubail,london,mauritius)
When one is done with the diploma, you can then do your final year in any campus of your choosing(depends on your finance definitely).
At the end of which you’ll be awarded a bsc in information technology

99.9 world professional programmers are self taught though I don't despise going to school. Everything you need is online for you only if you are not lazy

Your brother will still drop out from Programming school when the going gets tough. What does he know in 200L that he is saying they aren't taught anything. If he had been admitted for CS he would still have said the same thing. He's a lazy mofo that quits when things rachet up. Do you know how many times on the job things have gotten so difficult you don't even know where a solution will come from? You stay the course and tough it out and your brother doesn't sound like someone with the balls to do that I'm afraid

Google “Alt school Africa” for a year diploma course in software engineering ( 9 months of learning and 3 months of internship), you can pay after you get a job.

Hello, though I'm new to nairaland, I would like to give my contributions. First, I don't think it's a good decision to prioritize something you've never tried over one already at hand, that out of the way, I think you should try it (programming) out on a low key at first to see if you would love doing it. All this, you can do on your smartphone to confirm your passion for programming. If you love the lessons and do not feel bored after a while, then you can proceed to a real world learning. Good luck.
