aribisala0: A lot of maritime trade can be stimulated by river ports for barges and other shallow berth watercraft. In some countries the volume of cargo by this means is significant and can be an economic force multiplier as it remains the cheapest form of transport globally. Trade along the Niger between Kogi/Benue and down to Warri, etc can significantly be opened up. |

Reference:It is unnecessary the rail option is more efficient and secure. We already have piracy off the coast in the Atlantic so bringing that up river would only create another industry of criminality inland ; Kidnapping crew , hijacking boats and cargo etc Nigeria is not a safe or secure country today and we do not have the capacity to police our internal waters The Sensible thing to do is create inland ports like in Kaduna and connect these to the Ports by rail links We cannot dispute the fact that such a plan will cause conflict with those communities that may have to permit recurrent dredging and the impact of that of their own environment and fishing economies. The simple truth is this idea cannot fly without the agreement of Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa states. Why should they agree to what side-lines their own capacity to have seaports to their own benefit Their interest is better served by having a seaport e.g in Akwa Ibom and connecting that to the rest of the country by rail why would they forgo that and angry to recurrent River Dredging with risk of damaging environmental impact. Some people are looking at this from how it will benefit them and not how it will affect others 1 Like |

Odingo1:Always sentimental . What has this rubbish got to do with the fact that you need to be next to the sea to have a seaport? |

aribisala0: Just create the infrastructure and let businesses spring up. The trade between Parts of the north and the east can significantly be enhanced. The Niger Delta is full of inland ports, popularly called jetties and they handle all sorts of maritime trade and activities. Those in Rivers, Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom State (Eket to be specific) bring in goods from Cameroon round the clock. It does't have to be massive ports for Ocean liners or oil tankers, bulk carriers or container ships just simple flat bottom, shallow draft vessels, barges and tugs just as you have trade along the Nile, the Mississippi or the Thames in London. Kogi has vast mineral resources within an earshot of Onitsha. This can spur industrialization along the river just as you have a lot of industries located along the Mississippi moving coal, iron ore and other minerals, wheat, barley and other agric produce and machinery. An investment in an inland/river port will not bring in foreign exchange but it will surely bring in revenue and spur activity. 2 Likes |

Odingo1: Well, your picture says it all. First the topography is rocky.... so sedimentation will be minimal and dredging maintenance rare and as evidenced by the blue water. The Niger is essentially brown water which is high maintenance and so only viable for flat or shallow bottomed vessels. |
Re: Soludo: Proposed Onitsha Riverport Will Work Together With Anambra Airport by aribisala0(m): 5:16pm On Jan 30, 2022 |
Odingo1:very interesting and very irrelevant The circumstances are very different Greece is populated by Greeks . Nigeria is a heterogenous country with divergent interests There is no benefit to the people of Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta to permit any dredging with the risks of flooding and loss of fishing livelihood. Their interest is better served by having a seaport connected to the interior by rail Nigeria's coastal area in the Atlantic is now the piracy hotspot of the world and we do not have the capacity to police our waterways 1 Like |

If not for tribalism and political foolishness of the southern leaders and their various reps in the national assembly, every coastal states in the south should have a functioning seaport. This idea of one man in Abuja controlling every natural resources in the states is evil. The Onitsha Port is long overdue. 2 Likes |

hyfr:Do you know how much Obiano looted during his tenure? Billions of naira. The funds are there.. if he say he can do it he can do it. Let's be optimistic instead of doubting his ability to do it. Maybe he will employ world best construction companies, anything can be done if the right money is paid even if it means building a seaport will be his only achievement in his 4 years as a governor and maybe if he is voted in again he will finish whatever is left of the project. I believe it can be done. As i said, the Chinese can do it in 36 months if they are paid the correct money. They have done way more harder projects |

hyfr:if a dry port can be constructed in Kaduna state why will a seaport not constructed at Onitsha which has less than 1000 nautical miles from the Atlantic ocean, I only laugh at those bigots who are saying no sea, how many miles is delta state or bayelsa to anambra, they just don't want to reason that direction and which sea linked with river Niger at Onitsha 1 Like |
