JAMB report reveals states leading in law admissions
ByAzeezat Adedigba June 18, 2018 3 min read

Admissions into law in Nigerian universities between 2011 and 2015 were led by Imo, Anambra and Delta states, according to JAMB figures.

The three states were the most consistent of all top performers for the five years.

They also dominated medicine and were amongst leading performers in engineering admissions — the three courses being amongst the most competitive in Nigerian universities.

Earlier analyses by PREMIUM TIMES, using data from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, showed that medicine and engineering were dominated by mostly South-east, South-west and South-south states. North-central states of Kwara and Kogi also made a good showing.

But for law, there is a new member of the pack: Benue state, which delivered a positive but brief performance in 2011 by coming fourth behind Imo, Anambra and Delta.

That year, the four states were followed by Ogun, Rivers, Abia, Edo, Osun and Enugu.

Ogun appeared thrice in the top cadre in the five years, coming fourth in 2011, third in 2014 and second position in 2015.

Benue made it to the top three in 2011 before it dropped below the top 10, while Rivers made it to the top four in 2012, top three in 2013 before it dropped to eighth position in 2011 and 2014. It made the top seven in 2015.

The data are for students admitted through test-based examinations conducted by JAMB. JAMB’s admission process is guided by merit, university catchment area and gives advantage to educationally-less developed states.

For law, while Imo had 739 students admitted into various universities in 2011, Anambra followed with 679 and Enugu was third with 593. Benue came fourth with 558 and Ogun was fifth with 488 students.

In 2012, some of the states again made the top five. Imo emerged first with 551 students, Delta followed with 476 and Anambra came third with 469, Rivers came fourth with 447.

That year, Abia placed fifth with 355 students admitted into Law.

In 2013, positions changed significantly, with Delta taking the first position with 683 students.

Imo dropped to second with 630, while Rivers came third with 569. Anambra was fourth with 490 and Edo , with 463, took fifth.

Anambra jumped to first position 2014 with 452, Delta dropped to second position with 430, Ogun jumped to third position with 418. Osun was fourth with 381 and Edo took fifth with 373.

In 2015, Delta again took the first position with 456 students.

Ogun dropped to second with 419 while Imo dropped to third position with 415. Enugu was fourth with 363 and Osun took fifth.

For the first time in five years, Anambra slumped to sixth position.

Generally, the number of admitted law candidates fell compared to engineering and medicine.
Hassan Soweto, who coordinates a civil rights group, Education Rights Campaign, suggested one reason why admission into law faculties in Nigerian Universities has been falling is cost.

According to him, in most federal and state universities, students studying law are asked to pay tuition fees larger than what is charged for arts and social sciences.

Mr Soweto said law education is gradually being “commodified and commercialised”.

“When the cost of law school is also taken into consideration, law education is rapidly becoming the preserve of the few rich. This ugly phenomenon will continue to be the case until public education is properly funded such that regardless of whatever course students apply for, access is opened to anyone whether they come from poor or affluent backgrounds,” he said.

The states with the least number of students admitted into law were FCT, Yobe, Zamfara and Jigawa.

https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/272805-jamb-report-reveals-states-leading-in-law-admissions.html

With more universities opening across the country in the last decade, the number of students gaining admissions into specialised and competitive degree courses has steadily grown.

But when it comes to Medicine, four states have dominated admission trends for at least five years, consistently trouncing the other 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The states are Imo, Anambra, Delta and Enugu.

Between 2011 and 2015, these states had more students gaining admission to study Medicine than any other state, data from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) show.

In the five years, the four states — except Anambra — remained in the top five, an analysis of the data by PREMIUM TIMES has shown. Anambra took second position for four years, before dropping to sixth position in 2015.

Only two other states managed to break into the top five briefly. Osun took fifth position twice and fourth position once; while Edo took third position once, and fifth position once.

The data, covering 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, are for students admitted through test-based examinations conducted by JAMB.

JAMB’s admission process is guided by merit, university catchment area and grants advantage to educationally-less developed states.

The JAMB data were verified and validated by the National Bureau of Statistics, the bureau said.
Together, they provide an important glimpse into how the nation’s 36 states and Abuja compete when benchmarked by university admissions into various academic disciplines each year.

PREMIUM TIMES analysis is focused on three of the most competitive courses: Medicine, Engineering and Law.

In follow-up reports, this newspaper will evaluate the trend in Engineering and Law.

For Medicine, while Imo had 1,940 students admitted into various universities in 2011, Anambra followed with 1,536 and Enugu was third with 1,280. Delta came fourth with 1,137 and Abia was fifth with 931 students.

In 2012, the four states again made the top five. Imo emerged first with 1,841 students, Anambra followed with 1,473 and Delta came third, while 1,305, Enugu came fourth with 1,247.

That year, Osun placed fifth with 958 students admitted into Medicine.

Imo continued its leadership of the chart in 2013 with 2,395 students admitted to study Medicine, while Anambra again followed with 1,645 and Delta came third with 1,618. Enugu came fourth with 1,422. Fifth position was snatched by Edo with 1,256 students.

In 2014, Imo had 1,588 students, Anambra followed with 1,511; Delta came third with 1,170, Enugu came fourth with 1,161.

Osun reclaimed the fifth position with 1,146.

In 2015, positions changed significantly, with Delta jumping to first position with 1814 students.

Imo dropped to second with 1,727, while Edo came third with 1,510. Osun was fourth with 1,447 and Enugu, with 1,390, took fifth.

For the first time in five years, Anambra slumped to sixth position.

Hassan Soweto, who coordinates a civil rights group, Education Rights Campaign, said the admission pattern reflects the funding of education in the country.

Mr. Soweto assessed the states doing better as “one-eyed kings in the land of the blind”, saying even they have poor funding for education.

“It means that some states are doing a bit better while some are doing poorly in the midst of crisis because it does not mean the sector is well funded,” he said.

At the lowest rung of the admission table are FCT, Yobe, Zamfara and Jigawa.

FCT had the least in the five years with only 24 students admitted into Medicine in 2011.

It had 20 students in 2012, 46 students in 2013, 38 students in 2014 and 40 students in 2015.

Six other states also had a poor record of students who got admission to study Medicine.

In 2011, Yobe had 64 students, followed by Zamfara with 68 students. Jigawa had 74 while Taraba had 82 students.

Similarly in 2012, Yobe had 36 students that studied Medicine, followed by Bauchi with 48 students, Adamawa with 56 students and Zamfara had 69 students.

In 2013, Zamfara had 117 students who got admitted to study Medicine, followed by Adamawa with 121 students. Yobe had 124 students while Taraba had 128 students.

In 2014, Zamfara had 49 students who got admission to study medicine. Zamfara had 49 students, Kebbi had 78, Nassarawa had 106 and Taraba had108 students.

Also in 2015, Zamfara had 54 students who got admission to study medicine , kebbi had 95 students, sokoto had 105 and Jigawa had 111 students.

Mr. Soweto said the resources provided for states that are educationally disadvantaged in the northern states especially are not used for what they are provided for.

According to him, the pattern reflects the decline in funding in the northern state, decayed facilities in schools in the far north and quality of teachers in schools.

It goes both ways
This is not a political thread exactly. If you’re opening a thread about a particular person, that’s your headache but when you open a thread for a particular tribe? That’s some psychological problem that needs to be addressed. I’ve seen many anti Peter Obi thread, I don even get angry but a whole tribe?

How can Igbo dominate importation.
What do Igbos import that is of any significant value ? Do igbo import more cars n trucks than Yorubas ? The wheat that takes billion from Nigeria yearly what % of that do the Igbos import ?

Do Igbos dominant import from Europe America n even the Asia they can claim am sure if we break it down btw the SS n SE Igbos will barely secure 30%.

Beating their chest is the only thing they score highly in. I sell cars n import cars but the shipping company prefer shipping to this criminal gang of Igbos that exploit each of us with a car in the container that is why this jerk tag as themselves as importer. I have since learnt to buy from another companies that ship directly to me using roro.

Billingslord:

I know you Negros are not very bright. How does enrollment in an exam equal pass rate? or enrollment are. The SE have by far led in WAEC and JAMB in the past 10 years.
Over there in the SE it isso common that they lead in WAEC and JAMB that it is no longer news self. They are competing set by set which set will outdoor the other. They are not in competition with the rest o the nation.
however, SS states like Edo and Delta and Rivers (with significant Igbo/Igboid populations are doing great too.

Oyo and Osun states are competing with the North.

Shut up! You guys are competing with the North.

No candidate qualified for university admission from four Federal Government colleges in the 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination where Abia State topped the performance register, CHARLES ABAH writes

Details of the May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination emerged on Thursday with states in the South-East, again, leading in the performance chart of candidates who obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Abia State topped the chart with 33, 762 of its 52, 801 candidates.

This came as no candidate obtained five credits and above, including English and Mathematics from four Federal Government colleges.

The schools are the Federal Government Girls’ College, Bajoga, Gombe State; FGGC, Bauchi; FGGC Gboko, and the Federal Science and Technical College, Kafanchan.

To secure university admission in the country, a candidate must obtain credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Anambra State came second with 28, 379 out of 46, 385 candidates. While Abia State scored 63.94 per cent, Anambra got 61.18 per cent out of 100 per cent.

Edo State took the third position with 38, 052 of its 62, 327 candidates getting five credits and above. It had 61.05 per cent. Rivers and Imo states came fourth and fifth respectively.

In the 2014 May/June WASSCE rankings, Anambra State led the pack, while Abia State came second.

However, with 4.37 per cent, Yobe State came last on the 2015 rankings list with only 646 candidates obtaining five credits and above including English and Mathematics. Fourteen thousand, seven hundred and eight-four pupils, comprising 10, 807 males and 3,977 females, sat for the examination in the state.

Aside from Yobe State, seven other northern states occupied the rear positions in the rankings involving the 36 states and Abuja. They are Zamfara (36th), Jigawa (35th), Gombe (34th), Katsina (33rd), Kebbi (32nd) Bauchi (31st) and Sokoto (30th).

Lagos with 68, 173 out of 141, 963 candidates that sat for the examination placed sixth on the rankings. In fact, 32, 595 males and 35, 578 females obtained the required benchmark for university admission.

The statistics obtained exclusively by our correspondent on Thursday also revealed that Osun and Oyo states placed 29th and 26th respectively. While 8,801 candidates out of 48,818 obtained the basic entry requirement for university admission in Osun, Oyo State recorded only 21.03 per cent success in the examination.

Of the 78,896 candidates Oyo State presented, only 16,588 of them obtained five credits and above including English and Mathematics.

The breakdown, according to a WAEC source, is the consolidated results approved by the council following its National Examinations Committee meeting held in November.

One million five hundred and ninety thousand, two hundred and eighty-four candidates sat for the examination in which only 562, 413 candidates obtained credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics.

In other words, 1,029,871 representing 64.63 per cent failed to obtain admission requirement to the nation’s universities.

The former Head of National of the council, Mr. Charles Eguridu, announced the release of the results last August.

A further breakdown of the 2015 results, showed that the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th positions went to Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu and Ebonyi states in that order.

Ekiti State placed 11th with 8,954 out of its 21, 333 candidates that sat for the examination getting the required admission benchmark.

Kaduna, Ondo, Abuja, Kogi, Benue, Akwa Ibom, and Kwara states came 12th, 13th, 14, 15th and 16th in that order.

Ogun State with 75,994 candidates occupied the 19th position. The state bagged 32.89 per cent with its 25, 006 candidates, comprising 12,059 males and 12, 947 females, obtaining five credits and above including English and Mathematics.

In the 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25 slots are Cross River, Taraba, Plateau, Nassarawa, Kano and Borno states in that order. While 15,903 candidates out of 62,511 obtained the benchmark in Kano, 5,347 out of 21,695 got the same results in Borno.

Niger and Adamawa states occupy the rankings list ahead of Osun State. They placed 27th and 28th. While Osun State recorded 18.03 per cent success, Niger and Adamawa states got 19.66 and 18.08 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, in the performance register for the 104 Federal Government colleges in the same examination, the Federal Government Girls’ College, Benin, outshined the others with 230 of its 232 pupils getting the university admission yardstick.

The Federal Government Girls’ College, Kazaure, occupied the second slot with only two of its pupils also missing the benchmark. But while FGGC Benin, obtained 99.14 per cent, its Kazaure counterpart, got 98.10 per cent.

The breakdown showed that the Federal Government College, Rubochi, came third with its 146 candidates, comprising 94 males and 52 females, out of 156 that sat for the examination putting up good showings.

The Federal Government Academy, Suleja; FGC, Okigwe, and the FGC, Nise, came fourth, fifth and sixth.

From the Unity schools in Lagos, the FGC, Ijanikin, which occupied the seventh position in the rankings, emerged the best in the state with 357 out of its 387 candidates that sat for the examination obtaining the basic university entry requirement.

It came ahead of the over 100-year-old Kings College (18th), Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba (21st) and the Queens College (54th). While 361 out of 452 candidates obtained their papers at KC, 181 out of 413 females succeeded at QC.

From the statistics, The PUNCH findings revealed that of the 74 candidates that sat for the examination at the FGGC, Bajoga, no one got the basic admission requirement.

It was the scenario at the FGGC, Bauchi and Gboko. Whereas 143 candidates sat for the examination in the Bauchi school, 144 females did the same at the FGGC, Gboko.

For the FSTC, Kafanchan, of the 40 candidates, comprising 29 males and 11 females that sat for the examination, no one also obtained the minimum entry requirements to the university.

Of the 26 Unity schools occupying the rear positions on the performance chart, 22 of them are located in the North. The other four colleges are the FGGC, Ikot Obio Itong, Ukam at 89th position; FGGC, Calabar (92nd); FSTC, Uyo (93rd) and the FGC, Idoani, Ondo State occupying the 96th position.

You do not sound like an intelligent person. You cannot use this enrolment to judge the tribe that dominates education in Nigeria. There are lots of mushroom universities in SE, and 98% of their intakes are igbos, which is in contrast to SW universities which are of far high quality and they admit applicants from various parts of the country. That is the reason for the high number of intakes you mentioned

What an idiot it seems to me u lack comprehensive skill! U posted an article claiming the SSCE taking for the year 2020 and 2021 best result were all yorubas.

so i deposited two igbo students from the previous years who sat for the exam and had distinctions in all their subjects.

so my question to you was; what are the modalities being used to determine the best student In waec?

like you falsely claimed the best waec results in the last two years has all been yorubas.
