Bill To Enforce Teaching Of History In Secondary, Tertiary Schools Introduced In Senate

A bill seeking to enforce the teaching of Nigeria’s history across secondary and tertiary schools has been introduced in the Senate.

Sponsored by Senator Adeyemi Oriolowo, the bill was read for the first time during Tuesday’s plenary in the Senate chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It is titled ‘Compulsory Inclusion of Nigerian History in the Curriculum of Secondary and Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria Bill, 2022”.

Others introduced and read the first time include Federal University of Agriculture Sabongida Lantang, Plateau State (Establishment) Bill, 2022 by the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, and Federal University of Entrepreneur Onitsha (Establishment) Bill, 2022 by Senator Stella Oduah.

The two other bills are National Metallurgical Development Centre Act (Repeal) Bill, 2022 by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, and Companies and Allied Matters (CAC) Act 2020 (Amendment) Bill, 2022 by Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe.

The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, had led the principal officers into the chamber after which the official prayers were taking, setting the stage for the commencement of the day’s proceedings.

Senator Mpigi Barinada, thereafter, moved for the adoption of the votes and proceedings of Wednesday last week, and it was seconded by Senator Ibrahim Hadejia.

Following the introduction of the new bills, the lawmakers proceeded to consider four other bills for the second reading.

They are a Bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology Saakperwa Tai Ogoni, Rivers State and for other matters connected therewith, 2022 by Senator Barinada; a Bill for an Act to Regulate the mode of payment of rent on Residential Apartments, Office Spaces, etc in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and for other matters connected therewith, 2022 by Senator Smart Adeyemi; a Bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment of the Solid Minerals Development Bank and for other related matters therein, 2022 by Senator Yakubu Oseni; and a Bill for an Act to Amend the National Health Act No. 8 2014 to improve quality health care delivery through the inclusion and participation of the private sector and for other matters connected therewith, 2022 by Senator Oloriegbe.

They will kill the bill.

If History was taught in schools, I’m sure Tinubu urchins wouldn’t have voted for Buhari in 2015 because they would known his history.

I had the opportunity to study History during my Secondary School days because I attended a Catholic private school which didn’t give a fork about Nigeria’s stupidity.

It was where I learned about Usman Danfodio being an itinerant preacher from Futa Jalon; and that before Danfodio’s Jihad, Hausas were ruled by Sarkins which Danfodio replaced with Emirs.

Many more I can’t mention here.

One day, all Emirs in the north will be deposed and northerners will only be ruled by Sarkins who must true Hausas and no Fulani shall ever climb the stool.

Irrelevant. History was never stopped before. It was simply made an elective course just like Fine arts due to the low turnout of students during WAEC/NECO. People should verify before they argue ignorantly. The federal government even tried phasing out CRK/IRK into a combined Moral instruction course and if not for the outcry of over-religious Nigerians both courses would have become a thing of the past by now.

Stupid people. Why was it removed in the first place if not to distort the minds of the populace to their evil advantage. Now the deed has been done and damage so much it would take years of orientation and re-orientation to change.

Enforce in the Senate or not, history adopt in schools as a lesson subject or not, I will always tell my generation about lugard, his terror attitude and his forceful amalgamation to the northern terrorist and illiterates. I will never forget to tell my generations about Biafra and the zooo civil war. However I will never forget to tell them that a man from the northern zoo of this country is an enemy, deal with him at every opportunity you have

If states wanted to teach history they dont need federal intervention to make it happen. Nobody is stopping anyone from paying history teachers. The books aren't banned or unavailable.

Lol I don't get why you weirdos go on you foolish screeds about the fulani being deposed. I've noticed its always one Southern guy usually igbo or yoruba speaking for hausas or some northern person like they're unaware of the history. It's clear you guys dislike the fulani conquest because they were successful at the game.

Nigerian government fully knows why it is fidgeting about making this HISTORY subject a must in the educational curriculum of this failed nation.

The Bill will make it mandatory and not an elective.
History is boring if taught by a boring teacher. There are reasons advanced countries make it a mandatory GE class in their curricula. Then there are advanced History classes for those particularly interested in studying history. But every citizen knows the basics.

Omoh, Nairaland is toxic.

Too much hatred among folks who haven't met before. Tribalism.

Someone will stand up with his flat-head and start saying "we...", like they represent a whole tribe.

Are we going backwards or forward?

These people should be passing bills to make basic programming and computer appreciation compulsory in Nigerian secondary school and primary school respectively. That's where the world is going now and we need to follow the trends.

History rarely puts food on the table these days probably because any interested person can read about history as long as they have access to the internet.

Nice... The question is now when it comes to topical and controversial histories, whose own will be taught?
Re: Bill To Enforce Teaching Of History In Schools Introduced In Senate by GboyegaD(m): 5:09am On Feb 02, 2022
This is good but I hope it is an unbiased history that will be taught. The level of tribalism evident on this platform tells that we need understand our history better.

Again why is every waiting on people in Abuja to educate their kids? Politics is best handled locally. Lol its weird how everything must come from the center before anyone acts.

Can you answer why your state never made it mandatory. Lol why does the federal government have to act before you guys deem it important? Don't claim they banned it that lie was debunked. Lol after your supposed enemy starts teaching your kids you'll be surprised they indoctrinated them.
