Not really. More like the Honda Accord or something. The 504 was not seen as a luxury car. Just a really good, strong, reliable, efficient, well-built machine for people not interested in (or unable to afford) more ostentatious cars of the day like Mercedes Benz and Volvo.

The 504 was very common on the streets and was used as taxis too.

Please don't say that. The government then was really trying to encourage certain Nigerian assembled products from the Kaduna Peugeot plant and Lagos Volkswagen plant: The 504/505 for top officials and the VW Igala for lower/middle cadre.

The private sector and rich folks around then had the the main choice of the Toyota Crown and the ubiquitous Mercedes 280S which in its time was equivalent to your mentioned S500 series.
